I've heard of other musicians saying the same thing about musicians covering their songs - apparently, when one is a productive creator, one often moves on to new projects, or maybe keeps experimenting with the music and altering the songs a bit through time, and the fans who listen to the original music repeatedly will end up knowing it better than the creator.
