A young German tourist was robbed and killed in Hout bay for thinking he can go hike alone. You camera in South Africa is not your protection. Please be more careful in South Africa. She has been in Cape Town for days and has been hanging only in the area near the Long St backpackers hostel. She did not read anything about the racial composition of the city, or even try to find out. By now she should know what a coloured person is in contrast to the US. SA is more advanced than other parts of Africa, but the income inequality is staggering which make it more dangerous than other countries on the continent. I'm a pastor and I minister to homeless people, God has helped me to care for them. Many are very intelligent and sensitive, but often they do not comply with social norms, some are addicts, some have mental problems, some can be extremely aggressive and most are not to be trusted. I would strongly advise you not to get too familiar with them, they will see you as a soft target. You seem to have an affinity for the most dodgy places in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Even I as a big (130 kg), strong, army veteran would think twice about walking alone there. My brother once visited from Germany and whilst we were walking along the Durban seafront one night I said to him: "lets get out of here", He retorted:"Why? anyone would be crazy to take you on." I replied: "I'm not bullet proof."
30 April 2023, I was robbed at knife point at the Civic Centre MyCiti bus station in daylight, due to my own stupidity for having my phone out I was kicked to the floor and grabbed violently, I learnt a very hard lesson that has really left a mark on me I struggle daily with PTSD from the events. As a local i can’t stress enough, travel safe and be vigilant - it’s one of the worst experiences I have ever had to go through and the aftermath of it is just as bad.
