As an Islander fan I can tell you it was. The first one was up there too but the fourth was great because the sometimes obnoxious Canadian hockey press had already anointed the Oilers as 1983 Stanley Cup champs. The old pros taught the Oilers a lesson that year. Of course, talent will out, the Oilers were too good to be denied forever and took out the Islanders in 1984 to launch their own dynasty.

@@VandelayIndustries61 I don't care anything about these "Edmonton dynasty" idiots. The Islanders won 19 straight playoff series, something that will likely never be done again. James Bellflower no one is saying they weren’t, but the 19 straight playoff series wins is a sports record let alone an NHL record and one that will never be broken, do you know how significant that is?!? It means the Isles accomplished more than any other dynasty did. They had to play more games to win the same amount of cups as the 70’s Habs. The Habs team of the 50’s that won 5 in a row on had to play 2 series of a best of 5, if the Isles had had that format that would equal 10 straight cups.
The Isles IS the greatest of all time, these things are determined by statistics and the Isles accomplished more than anyone else ever has then or since.

Islanders now have their best GM coach combination since Torry and Arbour in Lamorello and Trotz. If they don't lose too many players now that Tampa is losing some of its stars the Islanders may be ready to get the cup. If they win game 7 against Tampa I think they beat Montreal and the cup comes back to Long Island. But what are they going to do now with the Coliseum now that the New super nice new building will be open in Elmont for the 2021-22 season? They spent money to refurbish the close to at least use for concerts and maybe a minor league team but the concerts probably will go to the new barn too and they don't have S minor league team. It would be a shame after the money they spent on the coliseum to just have to demolish it. It was great that the Islanders win their final game there. It's just too bad they weren't in the Finals.

In the final seconds Ken Morrow blocked a shot in the slot, then pounded Messier behind the net then moved in front covering the net only to find a loose puck which he buried into the Oilers open net to seal the Cup victory. Amazing. That's what separated the Islanders from other teams in the 80s, including the "great" Oilers.

I'm a Ranger fan, but I have no problem stating that the Islander dynasty from 1980-83 may have been the best ever. They had to win four rounds each year. When you consider they made the finals in 84, that's 19 consecutive playoff series wins. That will NEVER be touched. When analyzing the Habs from 76-79, I can say that maybe they were a bit better, but they got a bye in each of those years since they finished first, and therefore ONLY won 13 consecutive playoff series (counting round 1 in 1980). There's a very good chance that having an extra round from 76-76 wouldn't have done anything to deter Montreal from winning four in a row anyway. Yeah, the Habs were a bit better.

I was an Islander fan, but I disagree with that. Where were the Canadiens' weaknesses? Each team does what it does, but the Habs barely lost any preseason games much less anything else. In 77' they won 72 games and lost only 10 (no OT during the 78 game regular season, so they tied 10, I believe). That's 72-10-10 over 8 months on their way to the Cup. Additionally, I don't think they lost their preseason games that year, although I'd have to verify that - suffice it to say that they made the rest of the NHL look like they were in juniors.
I love the Islanders, but no way in hell - sorry. I remember the dynasty Islanders getting bored in their best seasons. Articles in Newsday were written about that and the irrelevance of the regular season, as the Isles were winning first overall (called Regular Season Champions, then - no pres. trophy).
There was no letdown with the Montreal teams. They devastated everyone, every time.
Not to belabor this, but if Lemaire hadn't gone to Switzerland, Dryden hadn't decided to go back to law school/into politics, and Bowman not have left for Buffalo, the Habs would have taken it again in 80'. No doubt in my mind.
