I absolutely love videos like this, where someone takes me inside the world of their niche interest/hobby to tell me about some scandal I would have never heard of. Fantastic video! "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but my eyes behold this as ugly" - Julie 2023
so I definitely followed you for Neopets content, and while I don't personally have much interest in other browser type games, I still watch every one of your videos because you do such interesting breakdowns and reviews, it's really fun to watch even without having any direct connection or part in haha
Hi! I am one of the backers for Lelola Paradise. When this happened I was worried they wouldn’t make their goal. It seemed like some backers reduced their amount then a few more backers pledged and they made their goal. Initially, I pledged a lower tier then I pledged for the highest so they could to get closer to their goal and for the additional rewards. They said in their KS that the money is not to make the game but for adding more detail and game awareness (advertisement). I think that’s why the game is already close to being done, but they might’ve needed more funding for game details, marketing, and awareness I’m super excited for the game! Personally, this is up my alley of aesthetic. I hope their goals for more awareness is successful.
I don't follow or play these kinds of games but I think your analysis is really interesting and your passion and interest really come through in your videos! Thanks for making them! Do you have an active Patreon that takes donations? When I clicked the link on your about page it just showed me creators you support
Glad you enjoy the content! My Patreon is currently down while I'm in grad school because I don't have much time to make content. 🥲 But i might relaunch it!
Your chart made me check up on the Paw Borough tiers to see the dispersion of money there (also to post it in the PB discord for funzies), and what does seem to be consistent across all of the backings is that FOMO must be huge because the biggest contributors towards the funds were both the Early Bluejay and Fauna Fanatic tiers, which each offer the "maximum" amount of rewards before the more limited ones such as ones with an IRL item or limited slots to design an item on the site. On that note...why did they not offer such a tier on this Kickstarter? That tends to be a pretty great way to instill a sense of belonging (or some synonym. you may get what I'm saying) to the community who would play the game. I backed PB at the companion tier because it would be great to leave an impact on a game I'm excited for. I totally think the exclusion of such a tier speaks more to this being something that would have released *anyway* even without a successful funding and more to it being a marketing ploy. But also...it's a dress-up game. That would have been a great way to get some high rollers posting about it on Instagram ("I just backed at $500 to create my own shirt! There's only a few tiers left!") or in a community spot. That was a HUGE fun thing to do in the PB discord in the last few days; watching the tiers get snapped up after someone decides to upgrade or downgrade their backing. With the PB kickstarter so hot on its heels and me being so involved there, I'm just...man. This could have been a GREAT marketing thing if they had tweaked it a bit. The KS as is feels really bare-bones. Also the sentences on the page just really bother me lol. Why did they italicize "almost" in "the variations are going to be almost endless." Hello? What a weird thing to emphasize. If you're community driven...where is the community right now? No linked Discord? Only linked their Instagram on the KS page itself? Girly where are your SOCIALS!!!!
Amazing points. You get it. You understand. I feel seen and heard. Anyways i was also blown away by the lack of backing tiers!!! Did they do any research? Early bird limited tiers are the bread and butter of the genre.
also I did back it a week or two ago for the highest tier, which is somewhat risky considering if this does not happen it'll be hard to get refunds, i'll just say i'm a genuine backer and come from the everskies and msp community and thats where i heard of this site
@@PSJulie I hope so I've honestly gone through around 5-6 different avatar based games launch periods to end up in delays and then cancellations over and over again so seeing the progress on this project coming out so smoothly is keeping me hopeful, although I can already tell most of my friends will stick to everskies because the bases of lelolaparadise are really.. bad looking, to put it bluntly :x .. and the base of your avatar is one of the biggest factors of these kind of games.. i wish they would scrap it and rework them, but hopefully if they allow talented designers to create their own items and faces, that would not be such a big issue
I seriously just heard about this game a day ago while I was searching for new browser based games to play and now I see a new video from you talking about it! I came across their kickstarter just yesterday and I thought it was odd they raised 1.5k and they are launching in March? I signed up on their website cause I’m curious how it’d play out out on launch. Though I’m not backing it, I’m interested in it given how different it is from other dress up browser games.
Man I remember when everyone on flightrising was dumping all their stuff to buy into dappervolk. People were like "this is going to be a fully immersive rpg experience! It's going to be the best game ever!" I wonder if those people regret liquidating their account for what seems like a pretty generic petsite. I joined played for a few days and found it just kinda meh. Getting pets seemed annoying, the rog element's were as bare bones as they could be etc.
Will you ever make a video talking about Herd of Hounds/Mweor/Furry-Paws the backlash towards Kahlem? I find it interesting that it's been 2 years since a lot of the drama happened and no one really knows about it outside of those circles haha
HMMMM. This is a controversial take, so please buckle up. I broached the topic with the subject of that drama. They pleaded with me to not make a video because of the amount of threats and doxing that they've already been subjected to. I also suspect there is some amount of spousal manipulation and exploitation at the root of the drama. It feels far more unkind and flat-out cruel to report on the topic when it will lead to more threats and harassment for a person. Even if they're in the wrong. I don't want to feed a hate mob.
Also, I've previously covered drama on niche sites and years later had the subject come to me and plead to take the video down. This has happened several times. It feels really messed up for me to perpetuate that cycle when I'm consistently taking videos down. I don't want to feed a hate mob or harm anyone. I'd rather make silly little videos that don't target any specific individuals.
@PSJulie I don't think this is a hot take or anything of the sort. I was personally really disgusted by both parties' actions throughout the entire event, even though I feel sympathy for both I think it could've been handled far differently. I agree it's a messy and likely too serious of a drama to cover on a channel where the covered dramas are so light in comparison to doxxing and the possibility of spousal abuse. I'm glad I could hear your perspective on it a bit though! I was following it very actively from both sides, joining both communities and talking to many of the loudest voices. I hope both parties and any future players in the pet sim genre will be able to find information about the incident and be able to learn from it.
i know nothing about this game, but Everskies never had any sort of funding, since Parrot, the co-creator, was going to code it all himself. as for other costs, i guess the creators paid for that themselves, and along came the ability for users to spend real money so could it be possible the developer here is not asking for pay?
Saw your thumbnail and searched for the site. I immediately subscribed to get starter coins. But it's weird that after a year, there's no launcher yet. On the site and Kickstarter says that it will launch on March 2023 but that is long time ago. I'm bit worried. Oh and it looks so cute 😍Can't wait to play! I'm big fashion collector myself so I will play a lot of it.
Hi Julie! Thank you for this video. I play Everskies and was looking forward to Lelola Paradise, since I really want to move on from ES due to their ... inflammatory stance on a lot of sociopolitics. Do you have a recommendation? I'd love to find another pixel doll game with a community feature that allows me to message my friends!
I found out about Lelola a few days ago when finding a bunch of their posts under the everskies hashtag on instagram. I thought it was really strange that their official account was tagging Lelola advertisements under a completely separate game that they - to my knowledge - have never worked/collaborated with. Given that I was already side-eyeing them for their practices, hearing this information isn't very surprising ://
Lelola seems like one of those games that'll be there one day and gone the next. I'd be surprised if I ever hear about again by someone other than Julie, lol.

they seem really seriously developing it and releasing it soon-ish .. which is very rare for avatar/dressup sites in this day and age

I think the the company backing it makes it easier for supporting an aggressive launch date.
