I am so amazed and in such awe with Ann Sothern right now...she has crushed me like no actress before and I only just discovered her earlier this year 2018...I was so impressed with her
and what she did in her career in show business, she did just about everything a person can do...and she did it so well...to me she is iconic

      @BJ Sully
I have been a fan of Ms Sothern's since first seeing her in Private Secretary decades ago. It wasn't until I was able to see her in more roles that I noticed a very interesting thread that bound nearly all her roles together. That is, she played a very savvy woman, no matter her character's job...but she was always rescuing hapless men. She was also smart enough to rescue those men in her life without them realizing it...most of the time. She also gave great advice to her female friends, though occasionally she would get them into hot water, short term.
The nice thing about Ann is that just as others here have commented, she wasn't a character, she wasn't one thing on screen and something/someone else off-screen. She must have been a warm and trustworthy friend to those who knew her.

One of the BEST and most talented (largely, unfortunately unheralded) women to ever grace the silver screen. They do NOT make-em like that any more (most wouldn't even get it nowadays) . . . Thank You for so generously posting this.

Really nice to see this. Miss Sothern was a true gem of a person. Imet her once only by mail but she was a truly wonderful person. I'm very thankful I had that opportunity.
It is one that one rarely gets. To anyone else who got that same chance, we don't know how lucky we were. Thanlks for posting this!

Maisie marathon on TCM today. Ms. Sothern was just great-great in every way. As I watch her in 1942's "Maisie Gets Her Man," I'm awed by the fact that her first Academy Award nomination came in 1987 for "The Whales of August." Remarkable career. Remarkable woman.

Fun to see her. First discovered her via her PRIVATE SECRETARY tv show and then the other show she did with Don Porter. Both had such great chemistry. Loved the MAISIE series. She held her own in musicals too. Thanks for sharing.

Ann Sothern could do it all. Wonderful actor in both drama and comedy and she could sing too. A very talented artist and all-round performer who was capable of pushing her limits. Her performance with John Cassavetes in one of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour shows is a real knockout.

I've been a fan of Ann Sothern for ten years now. I became a fan of her's the year she died, but after she died. I wish I could have wrote her a letter to let her know of my admiration for her. I don't know what happen to Hollywood today, but not one is as talented and beautiful as Ann. Ann was multi-talented, a great star, and on top of that beautiful. Her beauty should be up there with Ava, Hedy, Lana, and her talent should be up there with Judy Garland, because Ann did it all!

She was so cute! I really love her Maisie movies because they're actually about women's power. Her character was strong and could always get out of a jam with little or no help. Also, her character always stayed positive in the face of adversity. GREAT LADY!!!

Ann Sothern and Joan Blondell seem like similarly down-to-earth, funny, caring people. Obviously I have no idea what they were like in real life, but on screen they sure are likable.

A nice clip; could have run three times as long, which I'm sure Ann and movie fan Leonard Maltin would have been on board with, but on Entertainment Tonight two minutes is considered "generous." Thank goodness for the 8 + minute interview by Hugh Downs that's posted on RUclips. And what a treat to see her daughter Tisha Sterling being interviewed by old pro Hugh too.
When Ann suffered that horrible, crippling back injury when she was starring in that play (in Florida, wasn't it?) and the stagehand miss-timed a special effect, where in the world were Actors Equity and OSHA to come to her rescue?! There was no need for this covered accident to make this professional, veteran performer drain her financial resources during her lengthy recovery.

Ann Sothern seemed to be a really be a nice & funny lady. Lucille Ball was funny on Screen but very serious when in a 1 on 1 interview. On Johnny Carson she was funny but when one on one you can tell she was a very stern smart no nonsense lady. But I loveall these great legends that are on youtube for the younger generations to enjoy and experience the good old days before The Media turned the world into on huge reality show mess! Seems there are too many ppl with No Talent on screen today.

Ann had a very bad bout of hepititus and the disease AND the meds made it difficult to maintain her weight. For her entire TV career it was dark dresses and BIG white collars AND a strategically placed clip board. Her first series was Private Secretary, also with Don Porter and the actress who played Olive & Vi Praskins.

Ann's major problem was her weight- she began gaining pounds during the '50s, and that affected any project she worked in {that's probably why she agreed to be the voice of "Mother" in "MY MOTHER THE CAR"- no cameras needed to record dialogue!}. She had been slated to co-star with Eve Arden in the original pilot of "THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW" , but producer Desi Arnaz discovered their acting styles were too similar, so Kaye Ballard replaced Ann before filming- and she never really did much after that.

I liked Ann Sothern much better when she became a BBW than the portly, middle aged Elizabeth Taylor. In my opinion, Ann was a better actress than was Elizabeth, and had a better sense of humor, and more humility.

Health problems sparked Ann Southern's weight gain during the filming of her serires PRIVATE SECRETARY, which began below her waist. If you watch later episodes of the series, you'll see the bottom half of her increasing blocked from view by desks, sofas and frame lines -- as she desperately tried to regain her her health and figure. Sadly, her figure never was restored.

I read her daughter's book. It describes the daughter's rebellion and resentment toward and frequent dislike of her mother more rooted in being uncomfortable with having a movie/tv star as a mother. What comes through very clearly in Tisha's book is that her mother was always there for her through her self-destructive addictions, mental breakdowns, serious cancer and provided a safe haven for her granddaughter. Sothern, like my mother, came from a generation where touchy feely interaction was less a factor in showing love by always urging success. I well remember feeling unloved at times because of constant urging for doing better rather than praise and hugs. I was in my 30s before a friend told me she envied me because my mother was so proud of me and I realized how much mother had always loved me.
