The Bengal cannot come out of it's mindset. TMC came in protesting land acquisition in Singur. How would one think of TMC doing the same mistake as Buddhadeb? We need to come out of this populist mindset and also need to set up big metropolitan area like KMDA in Durgapur, Kalyani, Haldia, Siliguri, Asansol etc. Kolkata has too little space to expand. We can follow Maharashtra style of Urban development. They have big airports and cities like Pune, Nagpur. Pune is now the second metro city of Maharashtra.

I think we should expand and renovate behala airport instead of making another airport. Bhangar location is not suitable atleast according to me. Behala airport will be better for south kolkata people.

Bhangar plan is dropped for now considering long term environmental impact..Kalyani is on the radar again..but, whatever distance it is, shall never be feasible if it takes more than 45 minutes from the north boundary of the city i.e. Laketown, Chinarpark, Newtown etc. But, what it takes is 1 hour and 30 minutes and thus makes the location unviable as of now..I have failed to understand, why it takes 90 minutes time despite of Kalyani Expressway to travel only 48 km..the road zone has to be 120 kmph+, only then Kalyani shall be fit to hold an Airport, which is supposed to cater the 3rd largest megacity of India..

Kalyani can easily be a viable alternative option but, to find more than 3 thousand acre of vacant land is next to impossible proposition there. Bhangore is the best option no doubt. But the Govt. will not go for forceable direct acquisition of land because of political backlash. In West Bengal, nothing gets priority over politics ! If Kalyani is selected, a small airport that spreads around 2.5 acres, can be built up but, that's not going to serve the purpose.

কলকাতা বিমানবন্দর এ প্লেনের জায়গা নেই এটা কতটা সত্যি জানিনা। আরো অনেক কিছুর মতনই বিগত অনেক বছর ধরেই অন্য অনেক শহরই কলকাতার থেকে বড় হয়ে গেছে, যাত্রী/পণ্য চলাচল অনেক বেশি হয়। দিল্লী, মুম্বাই, ব্যাঙ্গালোর এসব বিমানবন্দরে উঠতে নামতে দেরি হওয়া খুবই নিত্যনৈমত্তিক ব্যাপার যেখানে, সেখানে কলকাতায় দেরি প্রায় হয় না, কারণ কম বিমান চলে। অবতরণের পর যেখানে সব বিমানবন্দরেই প্রায় air bridge পাওয়া যায় না, বা গেলেও বহুদূরে নামায় সেখানে কলকাতায় air bridge পাওয়া যায়নি খুবই কম হয়েছে। নেমে এসে belt এ luggage নিতে এসে দেখা যায় যে আশেপাশের সব belt প্রায় খালি পড়ে, পুরো জায়গাটা যেন এক ঘুমন্ত বিমানবন্দর, এমন হাল পৃথিবীর আর কোনো বিমানবন্দরে চোখে পড়েনি। কারণ সেই যাত্রী কম, বিমান কম। আর কম যাত্রীর কারণেই বহু সংস্থা তাদের আন্তর্জাতিক পরিষেবা বন্ধ করে দিয়েছে। তো এই অবস্থায় জানিনা বর্তমান বিমানবন্দরের সম্প্রসারণ বা অন্য কোথাও আরেকটা তৈরি কতটা যৌক্তিক। তার চেয়ে বর্তমানের bathroom থেকে lounge এগুলো কে renovate করুক। Gate গিয়ে বেরিয়ে এক রাশ দালালের, গাড়ির চালকের দাপাদাপি বড্ড বিরক্তিকর।

Kalyani has an important spot to deserve an airport to function at full fledge - AIIMS Kalyani. The only AIIMS of WB. If the need of a green corridoring happens, then Kalyani Airport could easily serve it! Other than that, it has the district headquarter of Hooghly district, the Hooghly-Chuchura-Chandannagar area and the important railway junction Bandel stn. to just the opposite of the Hooghly river! The only circumference that is in the range of KMDA area and has some bits of resemblances with proper Kolkata! The other three district headquarters situated in KMDA area (i.e. Howrah, Barasat and Alipore) are so close to Kolkata that they are not able to cater to for a new airport (Barasat is merely 10 km from the Dumdum airport itself!). For these reasons, the most fruitful option for Kolkata's 2nd Airport is obviously Kalyani. Moreover, Kalyani is also a planned city with ample spaces, roads, institutions, industrial and economic plannings, good connectivities, and the brainchild of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray - the same visionary who developed nowaday's Saltlake (also known as Bidhannagar), and also wanted to have Kalyani flourish like the same!! A good boost to the connectivity of Kalyani Airport with the Dumdum airport/core of Kolkata could be the Kalyani Expressway and a well-developed Airport Metro for faster connection (New Delhi model!). The same could be done for the opposite side also, then the connection of the Hooghly's district-headquarter Chuchura and other suburbs of Kolkata, with the core city would develop simultaneously, side-by-side with Delhi Road on this western side of Hooghly river! The two metros on two sides of Hooghly could be also joined at Kalyani side and other one by the East-West Metro corridor; in a Ring-Metro fashion to provide more convenience to travellers and commuters! Surely, a huge and expandable international airport cannot be situated in an area which is exploited with agricultural plots! Land use pattern matters in the output of these development projects.
In 2013-14, we have given opinion that, a new airport should be built in Howrah-Hooghly area where land and connectivity doesn't have much problem. Extended Dankuni or say take Singur, where 400 acre readily available.

Not easy project. Navi Mumbai project was initiated in 2002 , but actual construction started in 2018 , so by 2030 it will operational. Same here.. By 2050 or 2060 may be done , hope some where in kalyani or bhangare or some where near Bangladesh border.

They are least bothered about Airport. Rural people in Bengal are not aspirational like their counterparts in the rest of the country. Across the country, people are ready to give away their lands in exchange of lakhs and crores of compensation, so that they can build homes or buy cars, and afford quality education with that money. Landlosers in such projects are usually given at least one job per family, to take their livelihoods forward. No one has any problem, and eventually, sooner or later, even these rural people too have improvement in standard of living, and aspire to get to fly through the new Airport constructed on their ancestral land. In Bengal it is different (as usual). Here rural people have been taught for decades together Not to Dream about aspirations and ambitions - at least not by virtue of hardwork. Communists did an excellent job by destroying the very nature of dreaming to be rich and educated, for both rural and urban Bengal, and they have religiously taught NOT to aspire for higher standards of living. So now, you cannot expect the rural people of Bengal after so many years and decades to change their mentality overnight for some development/infrastructure project (be it roads/highways, industrial corridors, airports, anything...). This is the scenario throughout Bengal - that's why Bengal cannot have world class infra projects like other states of India. Thank the Communists and Baal Selaam company for their impeccable contribution to the society in Bengal.
Why not remove the obstruction on the 2nd runway and allow it's extension. The current infrastructure can accommodate much more. Moreover, Bhangar is the heart of East Calcutta wet lands and cannot be diverted as such. So Bhangar has to be ruled out.
Assam & Orissa are already making huge strides ahead. Orissa particularly with new ports and industrial corridors will overtake WB with this decade. Assam will become the hub for north east and gateway to South East Asia. WB need to figure out whether anti Centre will get them anywhere soon. Most educated guys in WB are leaving WB anyway.

Bhangar plan is dropped for now considering long term environmental impact..Kalyani is on the radar again..but, whatever distance it is, shall never be feasible if it takes more than 45 minutes from the north boundary of the city i.e. Laketown, Chinarpark, Newtown etc. But, what it takes is 1 hour and 30 minutes and thus makes the location unviable as of now..I have failed to understand, why it takes 90 minutes time despite of Kalyani Expressway to travel only 48 km..the road zone has to be 120 kmph+, only then Kalyani shall be fit to hold an Airport, which is supposed to cater the 3rd largest megacity of India..

Singur can be the destination of 2nd airport.
Kalyani can easily be a viable alternative option but, to find more than 3 thousand acre of vacant land is next to impossible proposition there. Bhangore is the best option no doubt. But the Govt. will not go for forceable direct acquisition of land because of political backlash. In West Bengal, nothing gets priority over politics ! If Kalyani is selected, a small airport that spreads around 2.5 acres, can be built up but, that's not going to serve the purpose.
Land acquisition would not be problem around Haringhata, Gayeshpur and Kalyani, since a lot of land is with the army since World War II

কলকাতা বিমানবন্দর এ প্লেনের জায়গা নেই এটা কতটা সত্যি জানিনা। আরো অনেক কিছুর মতনই বিগত অনেক বছর ধরেই অন্য অনেক শহরই কলকাতার থেকে বড় হয়ে গেছে, যাত্রী/পণ্য চলাচল অনেক বেশি হয়।
দিল্লী, মুম্বাই, ব্যাঙ্গালোর এসব বিমানবন্দরে উঠতে নামতে দেরি হওয়া খুবই নিত্যনৈমত্তিক ব্যাপার যেখানে, সেখানে কলকাতায় দেরি প্রায় হয় না, কারণ কম বিমান চলে।
অবতরণের পর যেখানে সব বিমানবন্দরেই প্রায় air bridge পাওয়া যায় না, বা গেলেও বহুদূরে নামায় সেখানে কলকাতায় air bridge পাওয়া যায়নি খুবই কম হয়েছে।
নেমে এসে belt এ luggage নিতে এসে দেখা যায় যে আশেপাশের সব belt প্রায় খালি পড়ে, পুরো জায়গাটা যেন এক ঘুমন্ত বিমানবন্দর, এমন হাল পৃথিবীর আর কোনো বিমানবন্দরে চোখে পড়েনি। কারণ সেই যাত্রী কম, বিমান কম।
আর কম যাত্রীর কারণেই বহু সংস্থা তাদের আন্তর্জাতিক পরিষেবা বন্ধ করে দিয়েছে।
তো এই অবস্থায় জানিনা বর্তমান বিমানবন্দরের সম্প্রসারণ বা অন্য কোথাও আরেকটা তৈরি কতটা যৌক্তিক।
তার চেয়ে বর্তমানের bathroom থেকে lounge এগুলো কে renovate করুক। Gate গিয়ে বেরিয়ে এক রাশ দালালের, গাড়ির চালকের দাপাদাপি বড্ড বিরক্তিকর।

Kalyani has an important spot to deserve an airport to function at full fledge - AIIMS Kalyani. The only AIIMS of WB. If the need of a green corridoring happens, then Kalyani Airport could easily serve it! Other than that, it has the district headquarter of Hooghly district, the Hooghly-Chuchura-Chandannagar area and the important railway junction Bandel stn. to just the opposite of the Hooghly river! The only circumference that is in the range of KMDA area and has some bits of resemblances with proper Kolkata! The other three district headquarters situated in KMDA area (i.e. Howrah, Barasat and Alipore) are so close to Kolkata that they are not able to cater to for a new airport (Barasat is merely 10 km from the Dumdum airport itself!). For these reasons, the most fruitful option for Kolkata's 2nd Airport is obviously Kalyani. Moreover, Kalyani is also a planned city with ample spaces, roads, institutions, industrial and economic plannings, good connectivities, and the brainchild of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray - the same visionary who developed nowaday's Saltlake (also known as Bidhannagar), and also wanted to have Kalyani flourish like the same!!
A good boost to the connectivity of Kalyani Airport with the Dumdum airport/core of Kolkata could be the Kalyani Expressway and a well-developed Airport Metro for faster connection (New Delhi model!). The same could be done for the opposite side also, then the connection of the Hooghly's district-headquarter Chuchura and other suburbs of Kolkata, with the core city would develop simultaneously, side-by-side with Delhi Road on this western side of Hooghly river! The two metros on two sides of Hooghly could be also joined at Kalyani side and other one by the East-West Metro corridor; in a Ring-Metro fashion to provide more convenience to travellers and commuters!
Surely, a huge and expandable international airport cannot be situated in an area which is exploited with agricultural plots! Land use pattern matters in the output of these development projects.
In 2013-14, we have given opinion that, a new airport should be built in Howrah-Hooghly area where land and connectivity doesn't have much problem. Extended Dankuni or say take Singur, where 400 acre readily available.

They are least bothered about Airport. Rural people in Bengal are not aspirational like their counterparts in the rest of the country. Across the country, people are ready to give away their lands in exchange of lakhs and crores of compensation, so that they can build homes or buy cars, and afford quality education with that money. Landlosers in such projects are usually given at least one job per family, to take their livelihoods forward. No one has any problem, and eventually, sooner or later, even these rural people too have improvement in standard of living, and aspire to get to fly through the new Airport constructed on their ancestral land.
In Bengal it is different (as usual). Here rural people have been taught for decades together Not to Dream about aspirations and ambitions - at least not by virtue of hardwork. Communists did an excellent job by destroying the very nature of dreaming to be rich and educated, for both rural and urban Bengal, and they have religiously taught NOT to aspire for higher standards of living. So now, you cannot expect the rural people of Bengal after so many years and decades to change their mentality overnight for some development/infrastructure project (be it roads/highways, industrial corridors, airports, anything...).
This is the scenario throughout Bengal - that's why Bengal cannot have world class infra projects like other states of India. Thank the Communists and Baal Selaam company for their impeccable contribution to the society in Bengal.

Why not remove the obstruction on the 2nd runway and allow it's extension. The current infrastructure can accommodate much more. Moreover, Bhangar is the heart of East Calcutta wet lands and cannot be diverted as such. So Bhangar has to be ruled out.
