Antakshari = Ant + akshar (end , letter). Our local culture, we played it in our childhood. But all our unconscious cultural deposits are finished now . Because we didnt protected our mass media borders and didnt 'only' encourage local languages in education system
This song is made from first few lines of multiple older famous hit songs. Antakshari is a typical fun game in a social gathering one would sing a few lines of a song and would stop at a word. The other has to sing another song staring from the last word sung by the previous singer.
Mr India also had an Antakshari (song competition) segment... but unlike this movie they made hilarious parodies of the original song, which was extremely funny when we watched it the 1st time.
Call it a game or a fun for timepass, when friends or family are together in India, they play ANTAKSHARI which is basically a singing competition between two groups or persons. And, the rules are as follows. One is supposed to pick a letter (vowel or consonant) where the singer from opposite side has stopped singing, and to immediately sing a new song beginning with that particular letter. For example, second last song ends with “fir vazah kya huyi intezaar ki” leaving letter K (Hindi consonant क) for the opposite side. Thus, the last song begins with “kaate nahi katate”. One who instantly recalls such song can start singing. No rule like it’s your turn now. Those who are not good at singing can help others in remembering a suitable song. One song must be sung once, involving both sides! No repeat! No break or waiting allowed! So you alway have to be prepared by anticipating where the current ongoing song is likely to end!!! If you can't do this you lose it! In this film’s Antakshari covering many popular Hindi songs, they not only sing songs, they also convey to each others their feelings, emotions, or messages through the lyrics. So, at the end of the last song, amidst people surrounding them, Suman admits her love for Prem by singing "I love you" !!!
Also its only the root consonants which are counted in this game. Also in our language script system the root consonent is 1 letter and there are vowel attachable symbols which are attached to change the overall letter like: क का की कू (ka kaa kii kuu) because of it we can write over 400 sounds with just 40+ letters phonetically. We invented this system and historical has been adopted in many regions like Tibet, south east asia etc
I agree, the song crescendo's towards the end. The last 3 songs are from Jewel Thief - Hoton Mein Aisi Baat, Sharaabi (means Drunkard) - Inteha Ho Gayi Intezaar Ki (a very drunk Mr Bachchan) and the last song is from Mr India - Kaate Nahin Kat Te (Sridevi in blue sari) I always wonder if this song didn't come out couple years before, how they would have done the Antakshari. The song is a perfect end to where Suman finally says I Love You and that too in front of everyone. My all time favourite scene is after this with the mum teasing Salman about marriage.
Full list of songs below --- One missing context for enjoying this song is that Prem (Salman Khan) is mad at Suman (Bhagyashree) for not saying "I love you" to him, and so has refused to speak to her until she says it to him 3 times, while holding her ears (in apology) and in public. Suman doesn't know how to do this esp. in public and so Manohar (Laxmikant Berde) starts up this game so that she has the cover to be able to do so. If you watch the song with this context, then you can see that they are not just playing the game according to the rules, but also having their argument in public and talking through their feelings - it's genius! Here is the song list - enjoy! :) Rajkumar (1964) - Aaja Aayi Bahar Prem Nagar (1974) - Jaa Mujhe Na Ab Yaad Aa Do Kaliyan (1968) - tumhari Nazar Kyon Khafa Jeene Ki Raah (1969) - Ek Banjara Gaaye Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) - Haal Kaisa Hai Janab Ka Dus Numbri (1976) - Yeh Duniya Ek Numbri Gopi (1970) - Ramchandra Keh Gaye Siyase Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani (1970) - Sama Hai Suhana Suhana Sargam (1979) - Hum To Chale Pardes Johny Mera Naam (1970) - Husn Ke Lakhon Rang Roti (1974) - Gore Rang Pe Itna Gumaan Na Kar Kanhaiya (1959) - Ruk Ja O Janewali Ruk Jaa Chori Chori (1956) - Jahan Mein Jaati Hoon Wahi Chale Aate Ho Farz (1967) - Hum To Tere Aashiq Hai Himmatwala (1983) - Nainon Mein Sapna Roti (1974) - Yeh Public Hai Jewel Thief (1967) - Honthon Mein Aisi Baat Sharaabi (1984) - Inteha Ho Gai Intezar Ki Mr. India (1987) - Kate Nahi Katate Ye Din Ye Raat
Antakshari is the favourite musical game of india . The rule is one who starts a song n then ends it , the otherone one has to sing the song with the word with which song ends. N if that word comes many time at the end every time the opponent has to find a new song . Songs are not repeated at all. Game is tough to play ifyou dont know many songs but easy if u are good at remembering them. Hope u understood antakshari game.😢
It doesn't have to be bollywood songs only. It's basically either poetry or word game. So in school competitions we needed poems starting with the last letter of the last poem. ( no bollywood song there- we would have thrown out of the competition and get scolded by teachers). ( or we played word game where next word should start with last letter of the last word)
If I remember accurately this song had a significance to the story - in the last antakshari song Bhagyashree says the three magical words to Salman - while others think she is singing a song, she is actually consenting (lakshmikant catches this ofcouse). Salman was perhaps mad at her in the prior scene for this reason
The singing voices are their own entities. Bollywood has never cared too much whether they match the actors own speaking voices. If anything, it’s more about suiting the actors face.
You are both super passionate. It’s great to see. You must listen to some hash chopera songs and his movies! And listen to sheets goshals songs! It’s great you use subtitles and get context before listening to a song. But it’s fantastic hearing. How the feelings of the songs still get conveyed to you and not just lost in translation so well done!! Keep it up

Best Antakshari song till date. Mpk became my all time favourite and Salman became a superstar.
