    From the Who, when they were just kids themselves. I think this was their first hit song from 1965 or 66. This really was the anthem for the 60s revolution, it was the younger generation's informing their parents, teachers, professors etc, things are going to be changing. It was a rebellion song, informing the world to pay attention to us..."My Generation."

    • @davescurry69

      It wasn't their first hit. Their first 2 singles - "I Can't Explain" and "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" - were both UK top 10 hits and both predate this classic. This was also the title track of their 1965 debut album.
      From the same album check out "The Kids Are Alright" (make sure it's the full length album version). Also they do a killer live version of "My Generation" on their incendiary LIVE AT LEEDS album.

    The pictures on the film are from the time they recorded the song. It was the scene Pete Townsend saw every day. The scooters, the
    hair, the youth. The Who Quadrophenia Album (Rock Opera) is set in London and Brighton in 1965, the kids coming of age after WWII.
    There is a film of Quadrophenia staring Sting as one the lead characters in the film.

    I like how you take the time to try and understand the song in the time it was written as well as applying those thought to today. The Live at Leeds album has an EPIC version of this song as it morphs into a 15 minute medley of other songs mostly from the Tommy album. It shows the band at their finest with one raw and powerful riff after another, gaining huge appreciation from those who were fortunate enough to be there.

    Lot of great clips and stills from the sixties in that vid. In the early days The Who would destroy their instruments after playing this song. There's a famous vid from The Smothers Brothers Show where Keith Moon put too much explosives in his drum; and when the time came to wreck things damaged Pete Townshends ear permanently.

    Never mind the video. All this 60s music was mostly originally heard on car radios -- one speaker in the middle of the dashboard. Stereo was for adults who owned houses. But things changed fast -- stereo mods and 4-track tapes for cars. I got that in '66 as I headed off to college.

    It is fitting that you are wearing a Grateful Dead T Shirt while reviewing The WHO because, the bands did several shows together, both in the US and in Europe. Fortunately, one of the shows in Essen, Germany was broadcast all over Europe, and was recorded on Videotape. The WHO concert is available as is the Grateful Dead concert, which includes Pete Townshend trying to keep up with the members of The Dead on a couple of songs. He tried is the best thing I can say about that. The best version of "My Generation" was from The WHO's appearance on "The Smothers Brothers Show". At the end of the song Keith Moon, the prankster that he was, set off an explosion behind his Drum kit, and is one reasons why Mr. Townshend is almost deaf these days.

  • @rk41gator
    @rk41gator Год назад +1

    60s was definitely when the 'our generation' started the rebellion. "Never trust anyone over 30" was a rallying cry. The anti-war movement fueled it. Smashing Pumpkins taps into that vibe. No?
    Pete Townshend was a trip. A wild card, off the rails. He and Phil Collins were friends. Phil played Uncle Ernie in Tommy Live 1989 L.A. Universal Amphitheater. Insanely good.

    I thoroughly enjoyed your actions Salvi, you miss a lot of things but given the Gap and that huge golf, it's quite impressive. And I love how you're open to stuff and you try to understand attitude and the meaning behind it. I'm a musician myself so I relate more on that level but I really enjoy your actions.

    There was a cool British mod/freakbeat band called The Eyes, who released their nod/reaction to The Who's classic, by recording a song called, My Degeneration, in 1966.

    Quadrophenia is a movie must, the album is phenomenal. The video is so spot on, there could be movie footage in it. A couple of icons shown, designer Vivianne Westwood (who sold “Punk” clothing at the time) and Dame Diana Rigg, from the tv show The Avengers (not that one) and Game of Thrones (Lady Oleanna).

  • @blitztim6416
    @blitztim6416 Год назад +2

    Pinball Wizard was a big hit from Tommy. Other songs? I would suggest Amazing Journey/Sparks and Acid Queen. The album is the story of a boy that suffers a trauma which causes him to become deaf, dumb and blind. But it’s a mental block, not physical. His parents try different remedies. He finally overcomes his own block and attempts to help others overcome their problems.

    Youth cultural rebellion can be said to have really started in the 1920s as a rejection of societal norms and classes post world war 1, the flappers, Jazz music and talkies a huge change btw, that each generation has embraced every decade since..

  • @davidburton9136

    As a "drummer", I'm biased, but to me the real driver on this great recording was Keith Moon. Keith is really playing this like a jazz player here, if the jazz drummer REALLY wanted to be noticed and could play really loud and fast. This was so different than how they played it the times I've seen them, or on their fantastic version of this song on "Live at Leeds". It became a much more straight-ahead banger rock song that would evolve into extended jam sessions. And it was great in the live versions too, but the original recording still stands tall, IMHO.

    I was 8 years old when The Who performed this song for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show, and I was so confused. They were just starting to become known and The Beatles were all the rage. It was insane.
    I heard this song and liked it, but I couldn't understand why they would hire a person who stutters to be their lead singer, and wondered if it was all just an act. I have nothing against stutterers, but when they played their next song, the stutter was gone and I had to smile at the audacity of the band. They were rebellious and broke their instruments onstage. It was wild!

    CR, perhaps record yourself listening to the whole album in one sitting. Then record your reflections on it. Then post whatever edits/individual songs that you want. Easy for me say, haha. I've seen other reactors get away with posting reactions to groups of three or four songs corresponding to each side of the original vinyl album (each album has four sides). But perhaps those reactors are from Canada or need to pause/rewind a couple of times per song. Anyway, we'll appreciate whatever you do. But if you enjoy the music, do yourself a favor and at some point listen to each of the whole albums in one go. Thanks for all the work you put in.

    The 60's generation was defined by breaking with the past generation. The Beat generation of the 50's did rebel but it wasn't as overt or as menacing to the establishment. The previous generations didn't rebel to a great degree and pretty much followed the status quo which had power over how you should behaved.
