How Should I Configure Virtual Memory Settings?

  • ➡️ The default settings for virtual memory are good enough for most. Tweaking virtual memory settings depends on your computer and what you do with it.
    ➡️ Configuring virtual memory
    Virtual memory only comes into play if your computer doesn’t have enough RAM to do what’s being asked of it. Configuring virtual memory settings is useful only if you find yourself in that situation. Doing less or adding RAM are more practical long-term solutions.

    Thanks Leo, your explanation makes a lot more sense than most I've listened to.

    A nice & coherent explanation of everything concerning the virtual memory topic... The best trick is getting the page file on a separate drive, but an option to put it on an external drive would be nice as an option in my oppinion 🎃

    Balancing RAM, disk, and disks that looks like RAM.

  • @robwallach6853

    Nicely explained, good job! Windows tends to use the paging file even when there is plenty of RAM available, seriously reducing performance. If you have enough RAM, disable the paging file. Even when I had only 16GB I never used a paging file. Never had an issue and the system is blazing fast.

      Wrong advice of a semi-intellectual with too much RAM! Many programs have code/data that will be used only once during e.g. initialization of the program or parts that are almost never used, because it is dealing with errors or exceptional situations. Windows pages out the least recently used memory, just let Windows page those unused parts of the programs out, it saves memory and it does not cost any performance. The advice turns into true BS, if you run the system from nvme or sata SSD. Just trust the Windows designers, they understand this issue better than Rob.

    What is the best file system to use for Virtual Memory drive or partition? NTFS? FAT32?

  • @msun12000
    @msun12000 2 года назад +1

    If your primary drive is an SSD, you wouldn't want to move the paging file to a second internal HDD if present.

    i have 12gb ddr4 ram and my virtual memory pagefile is automatically set to 1.82gb is that normal size plz lemmi know

    • @perthdave100
      @perthdave100 2 года назад

      yes, if the automatically manage paging files for all drives is ticked or blue shaded box, your pc or laptop will automatically allocate memory for what it requires, with 12gb ram you should not need any more for normal use.

    With no programs open or anything my Currently Allocated is more MB than recommended
    Is this a problem? If so, why is this like this? I do have XMP enabled but is that the reason I came across this setting because I am getting an Error or chrome that is SBOX FATAL MEMORY EXCEEDED

    Thanks Leo for this great explanation... but the boot speed is slow... why??!!

    • @askleonotenboom
      @askleonotenboom  2 года назад

      So many possible reasons. Depends on exactly where you see it being slow. I'd start you here: askleo.com/computer-slow-after-startup/

    • @perthdave100
      @perthdave100 2 года назад

      your boot speed may be slow due to too many programs loading when pc or laptop is firing up/powering up, this will have a big impact on boot time, click on the windows balloon or windows square on bottom left of the screen, move your arrow over programs, then click start up, this will show you how many programs are listed to load when pc or laptop boots up, go through each of them and delete what you don't want, restart pc or laptop and see if boot speed is quicker than before.

    adjusting virtual memory may help if you have 32 bit windows OS with 4gb ram or less, if you have 64 bit windows OS with 4gb or more, adjusting virtual memory may not help.
