I was lucky enough to see them play in Stockholm's concert hall shortly after the album Heavy Weather was released. It was a fantastic gig.
I saw them at London's Rainbow Theatre on the same tour. Yes, it was fantastic.

I'll never never forget this. A magical evening.
I've seen them as well at the acoustically perfect (as it was billed) Auditorium Theater in Chicago. Great show. That was back in the Jaco days.
Alex Acuna's drumming is sooo tasty and smooth on this album!!
Indeed. One of the reasons why my favorite rendition of "Teen Town" is from 'Live and Unreleased' is because of the feel he gives it.

To have heard Jaco would have been magic. Never got to hear this version of WR live, but when I did in 1982 it blew me away. Best concert of my life (just after Genesis 1978). Zawinul could just grab hold of you and then drag you musically all over the stage. Amazing. Surreal. Wonderful.
Think it was so great Chester Thompson played in this band; then when Genesis needed a drummer to work with Phil, they asked Chester. Genesis listened to WR and Zappa. I am not surprised; and you can hear this in Collins drumming with Brand X. Total fusion jazz. Love it.
I love this album. Jaco's playing is on another planet! I also very much like the track, "A Remark You Made" which has a nice laid-back, relaxing groove.
@Rhapsody Antics Yes, sorry. I did perhaps undersell it a little by calling it a groove. When I listen to it, for some reason, I always see blue skies and a yacht bobbing on a peaceful sea.

Great choice this morning, makes me want to dig out my fretless. For some reason I bought a used one a Squier Jazz with a little special plus on it, a Jaco P. neck plate. One thing is you’ve made me listen more to the bass and appreciate it more. Good on you.
Luckily, friends were into WR but, I haven’t listened enough. This was great.
Thanks for refreshing this in my mind ! (Went to Northeast High, knew Jaco... remembering when he pulled the frets out of his Fender bass with pliers creating one of the first electric fretless bass guitars...my band played across the room from his band "The Las Olas Brass" back in the day.

I've been offline for a while, so glad you got to hear this! Every musician should! BTW written by Jaco, most don't realize he wrote most of his compositions for an orchestra. Before he hit it big he had a job writing the charts for touring bands where he learned every instrument in an orchestra.
Cant go wrong with certain masters and Weather Report are in that club! Count my blessings for having raised into adulthood on heavy doses of heavy Fusion and deep Prog. Saw WR in later 70s. Everyone like to focus is Jaco but WR is an all-star cast!

Brilliant album. I have owned this for decades and loved it though for some reason it got forgotten. Maybe I will give it a full listen again later today.
Still cannot hear Jaco without a bit of sadness. Hearing was a revelation, seeing him live, it was instant deification! Not to belittle Miroslav, who is a great bass player also. The double live album "8:30" is a good snapshot of the group,particularly the tune "Teen Town" written by Jaco. Weather Report- cold with Shorter days!Peace & Love.
Outstanding! I used to play this album on Saturday mornings while cleaning the apartment/house. I had a sudden urge to stop what I was doing to tidy the living room. 🛋️
These older jazz fusion albums are excellent for a multitude of tasks. I listen at work work and it keeps me calmer and helps my day go smoother and faster.
@@-davidolivares Same. I enjoy the sound enough to play it as background music and interesting enough that when I can tune in, I can get into it.

...and although Jaco is playing super fas, at times (mostly ;-) he never gets in the way of the others because he is controlling the dynamics so perfect! He was aiming to playing the Bass in the way trumpet players play.and he did!!!
For wicked fretless....check out " April" by Brand X....or any Brand X for that matter.....

This is one of those songs that you listen to and then just ask yourself, are you f#ing kidding me?

Have not heard this album for far too long. I will now go find it, thanks.
It's certainly the most dramatic on the album, certainly a good finisher. But the track itself gets thicker, more dense and atmospheric and dramatic, balanced at the end on the edge for a minute before tipping over.
Makes me so glad I bought the album when it came out. So many my musical heroes are now unable to play, it does make me nostalgic. I don't like 2024!

I saw this version of Weather Report in a small hall (Warner Theater, Washington, DC) as an opening act, believe it or not, for Bonnie Raitt. Odd paring, but terrific show.
Wow, that was amazing. Did I hear Jaco? That song seemed built around him. He walked into the party like he was walking onto a yacht. Altogether harmonious.

Hi JP. DP from UK. We're just One Step From Heaven with this album. So glad you love it too. The thing about Weather Report is while they're all brilliant musicians, they play with such warmth and melody. Saw them live on this tour, and they were just outstanding.

What an unusual reference to make,(‘The Adventures’ track). That seemed so random, unless as soon as you typed the words, just naturally in one context, it suddenly sprang to mind in another,( as the title of a song from your past).
Strangely enough I had that song on single and used to love it. Unfortunately I just couldn’t get into the album other than that track.
Must go and listen to it now, I’ve not heard it for years lol

@@davidwylde8426 Hi David. Yes, it's a bit random, but with all my posts on this site I incorporate the title of a song from my vinyl and CD collection. I've got this band's Sea Of Love album - an overlooked gem imho (you should give it another go). When Justin played Alternative Ulster by Stiff Little Fingers a few days ago, I mentioned The Adventures' Broken Land song as another about The Troubles.

I just listened to OSFH again, ( must be the first time in over 30 years), and it still sounds great. Those ascending lines through the chorus give it an almost Proggy, epic quality.
I shall indeed give the album a listen on the weekend,( will be nostalgic at the very least), as well as the Heavy Weather album, which has probably been ten years or more since I last listened.

Now you should hear "PALLADIUM" next from this album. Trust me, I'm a fan of WR since 1975. And I feel sorry that you're not very comfortable with Mahavishnu Orchestra. We should try to change this. People were recommending the wrong tracks, which didn't fit your taste. Give the Mahavishnu Orchestra another try with "Visions Of The Emerald Beyond." You'll like that one much better. Go for the whole album. MO is so important. They simply influenced every musician, whether they are playing Rock, Jazz, Blues, Metal, Punk or whatever.

Great reaction! Love the "JP Stare" lol! One of my favorite tracks from WR. When Jaco was "on" he could tell stories with his playing. Thanks man! Can't wait for the next couple of Rush albums! 80s Rush is the bomb also IMO.Just one more quick request for Animal Logic (Stanley Clarke/Stewart Copeland/ Deborah Holland) "Spy in the house of love" was a single but really anything by them was pretty good. Not amazing like this though. WR with Jaco was next level. Fun to watch you listen. Great channel!
Listen to Boogie Woogie Waltz from Weather Report's Sweetnighter album! You won't regret it.
you picked quite possibly Weather Report’s very greatest moment. Jaco’s solo brings a stream of tears. Acuna is absolutely brilliant on this track. Joe and Wayne need no praise, we already know what giants they were, the very best. BTW, this is a Jaco composition

Weather Report always worth a listen, and this line up could, ( hardly a surprise), cut it live as well, as I can personally attest to.
You should check out Brand X again for some British fusion, especially as you like fretless bass. ‘Don’t Make Waves’ from the ‘Product’ album for an example of them trying to pull those fusion chops into a more conventional song format,….Phil Collins on drums and vocals,( you being a Genesis fan), and John Giblin on bass,( frequent Kate Bush ‘go
to’ fretless player).
Or from the same album and full on experimental fusion funk ….. ‘Not Good Enough…See Me’. Percy Jones on bass,( Mick Karn from Japan’s biggest influence), and Mike Clarke from Headhunters on drums.
Throughout the piece, the playing of all the musicians is very charged but also very airy and contrasting, and that's what makes all the difference between Weather Report and The Mahavishnu Orchestra ! It goes without saying that I much prefer the former. Did you know that Jaco Pastorius and also Percy Jones from Brand X were one of Mick Karn's influences ?

@@JustJP Don't be misled by comments like this, JP. The above statement lacks any musical understanding. There's hardly any music beeing more charged and more contrasting than the music of the MO. The problem of people with such comments is that they cannot grasp the intensity, complexity and density of such music as that of MO. You have to be a very very experienced listener to be able to permeate that music. Says one who has been listening to the MO since he was 12 years old.
@@JazzVisionsMusic Eh..you're overselling it a bit. I play jazz and I don't agree with this at all. Now maybe I havent heard enough MO but there is nothing all that dense or complex about Inner Mounting Flame. Mclaughlin spends half the time shredding on pentatonics, and not in an interesting way either. Most players agree his best stuff with was with Miles & Tony. And Shakti
@@timcardona9962 So where did I mention The Inner Mounting Flame? You should better listen to BOF, BN&E, APO and VOTEB. Furthermore it was about the MO reactions, not about JM's earlier work. And guess what, I'm a drummer for 45 years now. But if you wanna go into JM a little deeper, then you should listen to one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded: "Rawalpindi Blues" on Carla Bley's "Escalator Over The Hill" (it's here on YT).

This must be the most popular Weather Report album but my favourite one is Tale Spinnin. Track 3 Between the Thighs is also my favourite WF tune. A bit more raw and adventurous than any of the tunes in Heavy Weather.
Jaco, as full of himself as he was, was a great player. These guys are masters at work.
Zawinul was also full of himself.

Jazz for the sake of it. Riff free, emotion free, obscure melody. Zzzzzzz Great musicians, superb but the music they produce is crapola.
