It's expensive compared to some other countries (in particular America) because we've got a universal care health system, old age pension, and welfare safety net for ALL Australians. Plus we get a decent living wage with 4 weeks holiday pay a year with sick pay, and superannuation. We don't have to grovel for tips or work 3 jobs just to make ends meet.

You also have to think of it like economy, work force, location etc. In Hawaii it takes a lot of money to ship food and supplies out there and that’s just from the mainland US. So you can imagine how expensive shipping is to AUS from the rest of the world

The wages here in Australia have basically been frozen for many years while everything else is going up.The cost of real estate in Sydney and Melbourne is out of control.I am very concerned for the youth of today.
Yet so many English are immigrating to Australia for the longest.
Swede here: Petrol is about half price compared to us, food is slightly less due to if you're not picky half your grocery stores are on sale 24/7 while our grocery stores have a few items, maybe 10% of the grocery stores on sale. I know many europeans complain about the prices of alcohol in Australia but that's about the same or slightly less if you also find things on sale or go with 24-30 packs of cans.
Now: I made about twice the amount of money in Australia as I do in Sweden for jobs that required less skills/education/experience than what I have in Sweden.
Is that before or after currency conversion to Euro and taxes?

It is expensive because we allowed banks credit creation and lending. It is the spending from the lending and the credits short cut to the financial markets, having way to much excess credit, causing inflation that makes Australia expensive.

I lived in the UK and Sweden. My weekly shop cost twice as much as in Australia. Also eating out in Australia is WAAAAAY cheaper than London or Stockholm (I live in Sydney). Also, my salary in Australia is almost double what it was in the UK, so I’m nearly 4x better off here!

The cost of housing & food makes Australia a debt trap
Americans have super-cheap food drink and automobiles. And houses. Perth has more expensive coffee than other Australian cities.
As an Australian, I can say its expensive country to live. Food, petrol, alcohol, cigarettes and car registration is horrendous.

Literally saw houses in Texas for $ 200,00 and compared them to some Australian suburb homes which were listed at $770,000, despite being smaller and having less land.
Restaurants are expensive and the food is below average. The problem is you can't get the best 5 star service in Australia because that culture isn't taught here.

Expensive is subjective, different economy, different social net, different pay and social services structures, better work and health conditions etc, so yes maybe for some coming from overseas, but plenty of European countries that are very expensive to visit from our POV too
7% Tax in America, up to 38%* in Australia. Quality free healthcare, benefits, education - nah that wouldn't be a reason for it being more expensive. Food prices are the same, as much as people like to use their anecdotes as facts in western worlds food prices are practically the same, it's called regulatory production.

Visiting my son in the USA I found that typically I paid as much for a pound of food at the supermarket there as I did for a kilo of food here. After a lot of searching I found places where I could get a limited range of foods at a good price. Cappuccino cost about 50% more. Ice cream was nice but expensive. Ground coffee was much cheaper there. Spare parts were very expensive but built up items were cheaper. Books were cheaper but there was a shortage of non branded items. So simple consumable items could be four to five times the price there as here. Fuel was cheaper but a lot lower quality. Alcohol was cheaper but there is a gotcha in the form of added taxes at the point of purchase. Not to mention TIPPING that adds to the cost of every service. Between taxes and tipping and exchange rate it would cost $2 Australian to buy food out for every $1 US that was on the menu price.
That's odd you should say that . My experience visiting America was very different . I found clothing much cheaper and better quality , and food I thought was insanely cheap and portions were huge . Perhaps it depends on where in America you visited . Real estate in America I found to be extremely affordable . Nice homes for many many times less than you would pay for in Sydney. Yes our wages are a little higher here, but even taking that into consideration , the purchasing power of the American dollar is still far greater ,..... more for your money over there even with a slightly lower annual middle class income . As far as consumables , hec , a chicken for roasting was $1.99, the same size chook here in Sydney was 12 dollars . Organic fruits and vegetables are way way cheaper than you pay for here in Australia . In fact they were only a few cents more than the conventional produce and even that was darn cheaper than Australian agricultural produce . Sorry I did not intend to rave , I just that it was strange that your experience in the U.S. was so different . Have a nice day mate .
What is a pound of food ?
Tis expensive here. Another factor into why the automotive industry closed down and not to mention why so many companies here outsource and buy from overseas. The companies that still make products here are still expensive. Like rm williams boots and jeans as just one example. A total rip off! Much better value with Levi’s or jeans from big w.
And as for food, I thought I would try a pie my local cafe had, he said it was made in Byron bay. Fantastic. But when he said he wanted $8.90 I said shove it!

Everywhere is more expensive now. However, with Australia being at the very edge of the world, that will almost certainly make things more expensive in terms of imports.

The people who live at home with their parents still seem to have a lot of disposable income, ditto those who made serious money from the post-pandemic housing boom and the spike in rents, but the economic casualties aren't the people you are likely to encounter wandering around the Mall. We've all read about them - single mother living in a caravan with four kids etc - but until it happens to you, life goes on. As someone who doesn't smoke and rarely drinks alcohol, food and a roof over my head remain the biggest costs but how is that different to anywhere else in the developed world ? There are channels dedicated to telling people not to buy takeaway coffee and the like, but its a rare adult who can be that thrifty. For anyone contemplating a move, just make sure you can either afford to buy a home or factor in at least 3 months to find somewhere to rent - you will be competing with a lot of people and landlords have zero shame when it comes to asking more than they advertise.

See how you go living in the US if your unemployed, sick, or working 3 jobs for tips and your choice is to pay the rent, go to the doctor or feed the kids but you can't all 3. Australia will look like a utopia. Having said that the unemployment and pensioner rate really does need to be more.

The biggest drain on Australia is the insane number and wages of public servants, politicians and councils - for a country of 25M beyond belief.
Cut that. Then you would complain public amenities, transport, infrastructure, parks, libraries, government services are shit here like overseas. Australia is blessed when it comes to the abundance and quality of these things.
Neil Collis we have public servants earning $500k plus, unmatched anywhere in the world. I have worked as a contractor to several PS departments - most of them are sheltered workshops running a massive work for the dole project. The stupidity of so many people I encountered is breathtaking.
@@agylub You described federal parliament. One thing Australia should do is get rid of state governments. It is ridiculous having three levels of government, local, state and federal. Things are duplicated at every level and every state. It is just jobs for the boys. Conflicting legislation and laws in every state and federally. It's complicated and confusing. No national standard across the states different laws and legislation in every state. It's over bureaucracy gone mad. There is a minister for everything duplicated in every state then again federally along with they're departments. UK and NZ don't have state governments. People will say it's because Australia is so big. That's just a total cop out bullshit to protect the status quo.

Everyone makes so high wages it's impossible to find affordable housing anywhere in Sydney
I don't know what to base my response on. Whatever people say may or may not be expensive. But according to your research it's expensive. However, no one mentioned the price of rent. On most 1st world countries with cities a population of 400,000+ will probably have some very expensive real estate depending on the amenities and the overall value of the land. For example a luxury apartment on top of a grocery store that in a high volume shopping area will be very expensive compared to if it was just in a residential area or near a major expressway or freeway. Urban geographies may have what is called a multiple nuclei model in which there are many city centers or business districts within a major city. Bring near one of these major city centers will cause real estate to be really expensive while being away from a city center may be cheaper but still carry the cost of the average price of real estate based on the market.
I live on the outskirts of my city but still in the metropolitan area known as puget sound which consists of like 7+ cities -- Seattle, Bellevue, Shoreline, Lynnwood, Redmond, Tukwila. Each city within puget sound kind of has its own vibe. But if you are not near a center, it may be $300 to $1000 cheaper. My rent is $1200, that's $1725 Australian smackeroos. If I were to live downtown my 1 bedroom apartment would be close to $2000 to $2500 or $3653 Australian smackeroos or bucks. Since I live on the outskirts closer to the adjacent city, my rent is less but still calculated on the Seattle average.
I'm guessing Australian cities work similarly and have a similar urban geography setup. However, Irish and English cities have a Concentric Circle setup where the rich live in the city center located smack dab in the middle. (smack dab doesn't mean anything but user to emphasize location), followed by a circle surrounding that circle with the suburbs, and then the poor or working class on the most outer scale. Of course, this is an old model but some old European cities still show evidence of this model. Most contemporary cities use a multiple nuclei model.
Based upon the multiple nuclei model, I can say prices will fluctuate in all major cities of over a population of 400,000 +. For example, Los Angeles has some cheaper area but they are somewhat seedy and rough (of course, not as rough as Chicago). LA also is not also divided by urban geography but also it's space-time relationships based on capitalism is also discrimatory against race. People may even look at you wrong of you are a 20 year old white male in a poor part of town. Of course, there are poor people. But LA really does not have trailer parks for the lower class white people. The idea of the working class or a working class neighborhood is also kind of absent. I guess you could call Van Nuys somewhat working class, but the average income of a Van Nuys resident is $18 k year. There's like no middle ground. Hence, not only is LA divided by income but also secretly by race with very frw minority groups holding corporate positions..
Puget Sound on the other hand has a working class. It's not as racially divided as Los Angeles and you will see more families coming from different backgrounds. But because of the Amazon.com boom and bringing in more techies, Seattle and Puget Sound has become more expensive for native Seattalites and are thusly migrating out of Seattle to other cities and even leaving the state.
But I'm guessing Australia may be experiencing something similar. This is a hasty generalization, but I think with rise of tech and the Internet and e-commerce, it's making all major 1st world cities super expensive to live in. I bet your city of Perth on the east side is expensive since it's the major city on the east but not as much as city of Sidney, which is like your New York with its own Broadway theater district. However, there may be cheaper cities elsewhere. I really am talking out of my butt here since I'm not an expert and I've never been to Australia. Of course, i know about the didgeridoo....but that's the closest I get to experiencing Australia.
The word expensive is also kind of relative, but the way we define expensive really depends on your living experience and what you associate with that word. Hence, it's not only an individual definition, it is also culturally based on your local geography.

@@WelcomeTo No, it's not my area of expertise. It's more like a claim based in life experiences, some demographic information, and I took Intro to Geography a few years ago. I'm no expert, but I can sort of fake good claim based on some socio-economic stats and then combine it with human geography and maybe some sociology.
Geographers study the centrifugal forces that break societies apart and centripetal forces that unite them. Hence both forces are applied since it's based on whoever is in power and usually end up oppressing an identity. But nt all geography is bad. There are some good things like your friends may go shopping on a shopping district and it might actually bring you together. RUclips used to be a centripetal force, but because of the FTC, the FTC is acting like a centrifugal force even though it is trying to protect kids.
I have had mostly retail Jobs but also have office experience and even a little bit of acting. lol.

They clearly haven't been anywhere and when they have it's probably been some of the most expensive places to visit to buy food. They can't even come up with the common sense and nuance that you've written about.
When you are not even paying state personal income tax $2000 rent doesn't sound that expensive. Aside from that a lot of high-tech jobs in Seattle pay way more than $400 k annually. It's hard to find this kind of pay in Sydney, not to mention other cities in Australia. Personally I wouldn't mind paying $2000 for rent if I don't pay state income tax. The thing is I have already paid more than $2000 income tax in Sydney but I have to pay another $2000 for rent in the city center. Now that's called expensive.
Wages are pretty good and people enjoy a good life style, plus education and medical are very cheap so all in all it’s not too bad.
You still pay for your “cheap medical” - you do it through a thing called taxes, which are much higher than most other countries. You don’t get anything “for free”.
Brisbane is actually more expensive than Melb because there are very few cheap fruit & veg markets and less competition. Australia is run on duopolies eg supermarkets, airlines

You’re right. I lived in the UK in 1989-90 and found that the prices had the same number but with a pound symbol rather than a dollar. It was visually deceptive for a few days to all expats I compared notes with. The reality was that everything was double the price there.

If you pay to stay at a 5 star luxury resort anywhere in Australia you need the experience of a hotel or resort of that calibre but that's not what you get. The problem is you can't get what you pay for if it's meant to be luxury. The experience is average and that's where Australia needs to improve. If you know you it's not worth it don't get ripped off because you should always know better.
As an Australian and a war veteran I'm disgusted by the inflation and cost of living here. I didn't fight to make Australia worse, but better. We can't afford fresh fruit and vegetables, houses or fuel to go to work. I am one of the lucky ones, and in 5 years I will be in a self funded retirement. Sadly I can not afford to live in Australia, the country I fought for, but for the young people it's worse. My grand daughter is 18, she's in university, I don't think she can ever own a home. Again I didn't fight so my family can be homeless.

@@levelyour3dprinter169 Have you looked at Perth prices and made the comparison yourself? I lived there for 3 years, they were far higher than Brisbane and the cost of living was far higher in Perth. I purchased a car in 2011 while living in Perth, it was cheaper to fly to Adelaide, pay for 2 nights in a cheap motel, buy the car, pay for private transport and fly home than buy the car in WA.
Just look up US house prices I am a big fan of Chicago (it’s a nice city) so I am using that as my examples here. In Fernwood there is a nice 3 bedroom home for sale for $114,500 and the USA has lower home loan rates than Australia, lower taxes than Australia and the minimum adult wage is $15USD (20AUD) an hour in Illinois. Now Fernwood is far from the worst suburb in Chicago and is 21 minutes drive from the Chicago CBD. You can buy a really cheap place for $32,777US in a real s##t hole of a suburb such as Des Plains.
Both my examples in Chicago were freestanding homes under 30 mins from the CBD.
Wanneroo is 30 minutes’ drive from the Perth CBD and the cheapest freestanding homes I could find within 30 minutes, this area exceeded 700k, The crime rate in Wanneroo is higher per capita than Des Planes and Fernwood combined. Finally Chicago has a population of 2.7 million people, this means there are for more jobs available, while Perth has just under 2 million.
So in summery houses are ¼ the price, minimum wage is the same, more available jobs, taxes are lower (including sales tax, or as we call it GST), land rates are lower, crime is lower, public transport is better and cheaper and the cost of living is lower, and lower home loan interest rates in Chicago, than suburbs in Perth. Wanneroo has a higher crime rate than some of the biggest s##t holes in Chicago.
We keep getting told Australia is a great country and if this were 1980 I would agree with you, in 1980 Australia was far better than the USA to live. Today however Australia is an overpriced place to live, and everything is far more expensive. This country is going to Hell very fast and it’s blatantly obvious. If you want to see how bad it really is get a VPN and log into a USA IP address, now go do your grocery shopping online. Woolworths charged me $277au and the USA charged me $98us for the exact same items (Family Dollar). its nearly double the price here, throw in a bottle of my favourite tequila and I am paying far more in price than this since the tequila is $8us and $64aud here.

@@levelyour3dprinter169 Like I said I lived in Perth 12 years ago and I found it very expensive. Looking at the real estate today to give you those numbers even I was blown away by how much the house prices have risen. Wanneroo was was a bad place when I was there I was working at a mechanics workshop/car dealer and the pointless crime is what got to me most. Destruction of property, for no reason, spray painting and vandalising new cars. Constant theft of tools from the workshop despite the alarms activating they would steal the stuff. The isolation was the worst part of Perth, TV commercials loved to tell you how isolated you are with things like "we are the only store on the west coast that has this product."
Crime in Chicago per capita is lower than Perth. In Wanneroo 2019 there were 1,456 armed robberies that is 4 a day for a population of 203,401 people.
Garfield Park in Chicago is by far the worst suburb in Chicago. The Crime is so high that its 4 times the state average. but its actually equal to Wanneroo with armed robbery. Now don't get me wrong, I don't know how wealthy you are or what your budget is for a home, Perth has some very nice places where crime is at an all time low. Waterford for example in WA had 39 crimes total in 2019, and they counted misuse of a motor vehicle (doing a burn out) as a crime. there is an average price for a small 3 bedroom home being 1.5 million or more dollars and a studio apartment being around $800,000. There is a lovely house I just looked up on a tiny plot of land for "offers above 1.5 million" (7 Cygnus Parade, Waterford, WA 6152).
Go for a holiday to Perth for a week, see what it costs you, don't eat at places like McDonalds and KFC they are the same price and same food everywhere, eat the local cuisine, have a coffee in Fremantle, I didn't think it was that great but everyone is different, you might love it. I can recommend The Kings Park Motel, although I do not recommend going anywhere near Kings Park during the night. I just did a quote for a week its $1,093 and I must give credit where credit is due, I know I have given Perth a bad name during this conversation, but that is the same price I paid to stay here 8 years ago when I went back for business, so well done to these guys.

Australia’s taken what was a reasonable cost-of-living to wages economy and utterly skidded off the rails due almost entirely to abysmal, bumbling governance. Negative gearing is the dumbest self-own housing inflation scheme I’ve ever seen. The “far from everything” excuse is ridiculous considering costs of Australian goods themselves.
The fact that it costs roughly £1,000 or more for a flight from Heathrow or even LAX to go down to Melbourne or Brisbane is ridiculous. New Zealand slightly more expensive too. Blimey!

I'm a Canadian from Montreal who moved here to Brisbane Australia in 2018 to marry my Australian wife. Rent and the price of a house is far more expensive here than in Canada. I managed to get a job and I'm being paid almost double than what I was making in Montreal. The food quality here is lower than Montreal. McDonalds and KFC are not good. There are a lot of foods that Australia doesn't have that I really miss. We need a Tim Hortons in Brisbane. I miss my double chocolate donuts from Tims. I even sent them an email requesting they open a franchise here but no reply. LOL Income tax here is higher too but I find the government gives back in the way of public amenities such as public BBQ's you can use in the parks. Water fountains in parks and walkways. And garbage cans. They have garbage cans in many places while in Montreal they are taking them away. And it's so much cleaner here than in Montreal. Montreal is a pigsty compared to here. And people here are friendly. They say hi to you. In Montreal if you're English, the french growl at you and treat you worse than a second class citizen.
@darvinion So they don't have to pay city workers or contractors to empty them. They still have some garbage cans of course but not very many now, and the result is that lazy people toss their trash on the ground.

Nahush Kulkarni true. I was surprised how cheap holidays were in Japan. Alcohol is dirt cheap. Good quality food is cheap. But fresh fruit is insane.
@Frank Burjan It’s actually not. We pay more for Australian meat in Australia than you can buy it for overseas. Fresh fruit and veg is more expensive in Australia as well.
@Frank Burjan You realize Australia is a big country right? As large as mainland USA. Sydney isn’t the only city in the country and it’s a long way from where many live. We live in the next closest capital city but I’m still not going to drive 3+ hours to get my fresh food at Flemington market every week. I would spend more in petrol (which is also very expensive in Australia) than I would save on food. I spent more than twice as much on food in Australia as I did when I lived in the US, and there’s less choice. You can’t blame that on the difference in the dollar as the US dollar is worth more than half the Australian dollar. When I can buy Australian meat cheaper in the US than I can here, after it’s been shipped over there...then there’s something wrong.
@Frank Burjan it’s great you have Flemington markets and Vietnamese butchers available to you. That is not the ‘average’ available source of fresh food for most Australian’s. It’s nice that you have the means and ability to go to multiple different locations to get what you need and shop around. Just come back from living in the US for many years and I can tell you we pay too much for our food. I could buy Aussie lamb cheaper in my grocery store in the US than I can here in Australia. That’s just one example
@@scottbowser702 The reason ,USA is cheaper in food variety is South America supplies raw materials ,coffee,food (vegatables + process food) to USA at a cheap rate . Australia a Island country does not have advantage like USA.

If you own a property things get real cheap down here! I myself don't enjoy eating out so I enjoy cooking my own meals which saves me a lot of money! I save around 60-65% of my salary... When I get my own property I will be saving even more! I also don't drink or smoke (which are very expensive too), I don't have a car even though I could buy one tomorrow if I wish, because I think car is just waste of money.. I'm a minimalist and the things I spend most of my money are traveling, coffee and avocado :)

What are these people talking about?! I'm from San Francisco which, yeah, it's a super expensive city, but I just got back from three weeks traveling in Australia and was amazed by how affordable it was. Restaurants and groceries were all, like, half of what it would cost me here.

American here. I love these Australian accents. They talk so funny 😅🥳 America is pretty expensive right now. 2 bedroom apartments in Georgia are going for $14/1500 now. 1 bedrooms for $1200. The minimum wage is $7.25 but ever since covid shorted staff workers, most places I see are paying minimum $9/10 an hour now.
Few places are paying $7.25 tho. Most are paying $12-15 an hour.
Minimum wage is for highschool students. No full time working adult should be working on minimum wage.

Because we don't have the geographical situation like Europe and the US, where they share common borders with other countries, and we are an island. Even the fact that we have asian countries right next to us, food and goods still have to be shipped here, adding to the cost. Businesses, here, know this and charge higher prices. Even things from China are marked-up. We also have a higher rate of pay which is a vicious circle ( workers on higher pay adds cost to the product, so I hear. ). Our land prices are ridiculous because there is no government laws to stop real estates ripping off the market and there are idiot people that will pay anything for land .
