    What is that black stuff you use on the leather? I would assume it's some kind of adhesive but there's another material you use that also seems to be adhesive, so I'm not sure. Is it a softener? A hardening agent to keep it in place?

    nice..the only thing i was wondering about was...i forget the name but its a piece of leather that gets glued in between the leather sides then you stich thru all three thicknesses of leather.
    I believe its so that you dont worry about cutting your stiches when drawing your knife.
    Other than that its a nice looking sheath.

    There is a reason that leather sheathes are made of three layers at the knife edge side. Your knife will cut the stitching. otherwise, this is a good looking sheath.

    Nice Looking Sheath. I have a few questions though. Why didn't you put in anything to protect the stitching from the knife edge? Why didn't you burnish the leather? Why did you wait until after the assembly to carve and stain the leather? Just curious. Thanks for posting the build. Take Care.

    • @jackspradt1562
      @jackspradt1562 5 лет назад +2

      exactly, it's like watching a video on the wrong/backwards way to make a sheath - no welt, no burnishing the edges,drilled the holes, no roughing the leather before glue, leather way too wet, etc etc. hey what do i know though right?

      Probably dye. It is common, to doing this before you install stuck the piece to the others. Later you can ruin other parts with the paint or wont be able to reach every corner what needs to be painted (and really looks bad, if the painting is patchy)

    Nothing to protect the seam from the blade?

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 6 лет назад

      There's no need for such protection, if you fashion the sheath correctly. Rivets in the sheath is largely a western fashion, and is done so the sheath can be sewn together flat, and with two pieces. Even sheath liners are not traditionally used, and, again, aren't needed, if you know how to make a sheath the right way. If you look at European sheaths, Puukko sheaths, and even South American sheaths, this isn't done.
      Metal was scarce and expensive in most of these places, and the only liner they had was wood, so they had to learn how to make sheaths without the use of rivets or liners, though sheaths made of bark were also common. Now many people, probably most, prefer sheaths without rivets or liners.
      I've been using a sheath must like the one in this video for more than thirty years, and haven't had any problem because it has no rivets or liners to protect the sheath from the knife.
      I carried a sheath made of very soft, thin, doeskin for several years. The only thing it had to protect the stitches from the knife edge was a strip of equally soft, thin doeskin that covered the stitches on the inside of the sheath. Even after years of use, the knife never did cut through that very thin layer of doeskin.
      And if you have a molded sheath, one that's wet formed to fit solidly around the knife, the edge of the blade is unlikely to come into contact with the stitches, even of you don't do anything else to prevent it.
