A movie like this is a bit beyond whether it was great or good or whatever. It's such a brilliant glimpse into a part of cinema very few (if any) people were aware of. A movie with an all Black cast. Extremely low budget. But the characters are developed with grace and dignity (with the exception of Stepin Fetchit-- a much vilified actor know for his extremely stereotyped acting. Yet he was beloved and hated at the same time by the black community). This is an absolute must watch for any true fan of movie making from the 30's and 40's. Thank you.

Hi Jef 🍕 I’m trying to more of these “race” films as they were called, but they usually in very poorly preserved condition. 🍕

Looking at this movie objectively, I have to say it really isn't all that great. Some of the acting is decent, some is just plain bad. Stepin Fetchit is his usual insufferable self--by this time his mewling, simpering man-child character had become an embarrassment to the black community, a relic of another time. The story itself is fine, a solid crime drama, though it's not really a mystery since we know who the real killers are the whole time. Interesting to see that the black cops are just as boorish as white cops usually are in movies of this vintage, hurling accusations and trying to bully suspects into confessing. Some things, it seems, were universal.
