Spyderco SpydieChef Hype VS Reality “Review”

- This is a review of the Spyderco SpydieChef pocket knife titanium handles and LC200N, which is a nitrogen alloyed tool steel. I did this in the “hype vs reality” fashion that I have been using lately, with specs and size comparisons at the beginning, and showed some footage of me using the knife. Also, I added some quick footage of the knife splitting and whittling a free hanging hair after sharpening.
Detend ball is ceramic.. I bought it today after 3years of trying to find it here in Indonesia.. Finally.. It's simply amazing piece.. Thx
I watched this video, then bought one. Then had to come back to rewatch how you close it using your middle finger on the frame lock and index to start closing it. Love it. It’s now my favorite way to fidget with it. Great review, thanks.
Like the background and measurement of behind the edge.
So the hype is deserved. It's one of my favorites. It's my user right now, it's not great at stabbing clamshell packages, but other than that it's a beast.
This knife is one of my favorites in the collection. Tolerances were perfect and the action was buttery smooth out of box. Spyderco has never done me wrong in that regard. The Kapara is next in my list 😎
David Rother That’s awesome, and I don’t think everyone can say that about spyderco, including me. My SpydieChef, on the other hand, I can say that about, and it was and is absolutely excellent. That Kapara is definitely on my radar, and I want to get my hands on one eventually for sure👍 thanks for the feedback here✌️
FlamQ Dbltap yeah man, they should’ve done lc200n, and it would have been a staple.
The background is fine
I use my Spydiechef exclusively in the kitchen and avoid my regular kitchen knives so I know how you feel about using a folding knife in the kitchen.
I'd definitely use this in the kitchen. I'm sure it's better quality than any kitchen knife I own.
Really nice knife mate thanks for the heads up on it. Atb paddy 👍☘️😀
paddys potato peelers Thanks Paddy!
By the way... I did sort of tag you in a video, or I implied that Steve tag you. Which was kind of an indirect tag, but I’m not sure Steve’s going to do the video. I was really curious what you had to bring to the table. Check out my “show me your SAK” video. Thanks buddy, Kenny🤙
Here I am late to this party. I still love the Spydie Chef though. My favorite knife from that location is the Kapara. It is really sublime!
At 18 minutes you not me laughing hard thanks for you very natural reviews
Honestly at first I didnt like the way it looked, but then seeing it more and more on social media etc it grew on me. I like the blade shape and the over all shape of the knife period. I dont use my knives really for food prep or anything just mainly work so I ended up ordering one yesterday to see how it goes. I think I'm gonna like it.
I think you will too... It’s just a great edc knife. It’s light, slim, has a great size and fully capable blade, and is pretty much rust proof. Not to mention lc200n takes a great edge, and holds it well.
@@inthepocket7405 thanks for all of the info. Good content for sure
@@inthepocket7405 I got it today and so far I love it. I love the way it feels in the hand and the blade shape/positioning. It looks so much better in person imo. It's a lot lighter than what I expected just never know until you actually feel it in the hand and pocket. I cant wait to see how it does during the day
When you coming back man? Love your review style.
Take it apart. You may have the newer model with ceramic detent ball. Also when you have it apart, put sharpie on the blade tang to remove any stick!
FlamQ Dbltap only 14 days, actually
I liked mine a lot. Now I am not so certain. I babied the knife, kept it clean, did minimal cutting with it, then noticed it had chipping up and down the edge. How? I couldn’t believe it. Have you run into this problem with the edge?
I haven’t had any chipping problems with any of the lc200n I’ve used, but maybe you got a bad example. Maybe got up Spyderco if the problem persists, but it might just need to be sharpened a few times.
How well do you think this knife would work for a lefty? I bought one today. Hoping it works out.
Dr. Tautology I think it would be good for a lefty. I’m sure you are used to disengaging lock bars lefty, and you can easily spydie flick it. You can get your thumb in there to slow roll it, or flick it if you stuff in the corner of your nail. I just went and grabbed it again, and sat here and played with it for a while. I had used it with my left hand before, but I just wanted to get fresh thoughts for you👍
@@inthepocket7405 Hey, I appreciate that. I know it's not usually a consideration for reviewers or knife companies. I try to only buy dedicated lefties, but this is one I wanted to take a chance on.
I own a para 2 that's isn't smooth at all unless I loosen it to the point of alot of blade play. Your 3 drops free. Wow. Is there play in your para 3?
Great vid mani .i agree w u.
Nice review. You probably have the CQI with the ceramic detente ball. I was the same (shouldn’t be buying another knife .. but did anyway lol). I’ve read on forums that the lock face is neither carbidized nor carburised. Not sure how accurate that is, but, from memory, a company rep posted that. Keen to get mine in hand. Seems to grow on people who have it.
I like the one cm 😉 squares on the mat.
PS my understanding is that carbidized is the addition of a layer of carbide on the ti (a la Grimsmo bros) and carburised, is where the the ti lock interface is heat treated and made tougher (CRK does this)
Tony Canniffe Thanks Tony. Yeah, I believe I did get the CQI version, which I’m stoked on. Thanks for the info on that, and I’m going to look a little deeper into it. I’m just impressed that I don’t get more lock stick if it’s not. Might be another one of those solutions to a problem that doesn’t exist, and most of my other ti frame locks have an insert. Thanks for watching!
I took mine apart and it has a ceramic detent and the lock face is carburised from what I can tell.. there is a distinct coloration on it .. looks like heat ano.
SuperSteel Steve So it’s probably carburised if Tony is correct. Interesting... going to have to take apart mine now.🤔🤔
How does it do cutting onions?
Bigger onions?
Not huge but, bigger
Nice review
If you have to choose one voor light edc task spyderco kapara or spydiechef?
Kapara. The chef is nice because of the rust factor but its too nice and specific for most tasks like cutting rooe, opening boxes, etc..
Great video Kenny!! Thanks for sharing brother!!!
Glock Gaston Thanks buddy!
Great review. This is my first time coming across your work and I’ve subbed. Keep ‘em coming, yo.
Matt Reilly thanks man, and welcome to the channel.
I bought one off the hype...
I should carry it more.
Cark Nelson I think you will enjoy carrying it more than you think, but than again, not every knife is for everyone.
What do you use to sharpen? This is the first I have seen that hair demonstration.
Cameron Bowen I use a kme sharpening system, but I am working on my freehand skills though. I want to be able to accomplish an edge like this freehand.
You must have been reading my mind, been waiting for a review of this type....background is fine...PM3 rules!!!
Looks like the cut out for thumb hole needs to be bigger. Lock stick ,there should be none. Should be carbadized like a Cris Reeve or a lock bar insert, not there because cutting cost. All belly blade harder to Sharp. Still wanna get one though.
All very good points, but it works for me, even with all things considered. The positives far outweigh the negatives on this knife, for me.
Mine is coming tomorrow!
Nice!👍 congrats! Look forward to seeing what you think.
I sold mine because of bad lock stick and it was stainles steel detent ball. My techno 1 and techno 2 have zero lockstick and when compared with the chef. Chef folder for some odd reason always pokes my leg in my pocket. Carrying issues, lock issues and action made me sell the chef version 1. I love how it cuts and looks and blade shape but couldnt stay in my collection.
MetalsForBrunch I can understand that... I haven’t noticed it poking me with the sharp corner, but I’ll be looking for it now lol None of the negatives really have bothered me much, and I still love it, but that’s why we all have opinions:) and I can definitely understand yours
@@inthepocket7405 spydie chef is now $214 for preorder. The first spydie chef version 1 I bought was $152 brand new. The spyderco price increase doesnt justify its value. I just got bought the zero tolerance zt 0470 for $240. IMO the zt 0470 is the winner with premium material also made in usa for only $26 more than the spydie chef. I was going to give the spydie chef version2 a second chance but not for $214. Spydie chef is a very good knife but way over priced if you know what I mean.
Can’t stand lockstick of any kind. Would buy one immediately if could guarantee to get one without it.
Mike Gauthier I can understand that. It does bother me, but I can see how it could bother some.
Does Spyderco have guidance similar to CRK recommending slow roll opening?
Bet you open and closed that knife repeatedly 100 times
But I enjoyed your review
Enjoyed
Hype: it's a really well done pocket knife. Reality: it's not a surfboard or a dank sack of ganga.
LMAO nice
Contemplating picking it up for 180 shipped
That’s a great deal👍
@@inthepocket7405 got it on the way lol
It's like a sebenza as far as the lock. Carburized lock bar which to me is far superior than any steel lock insert or liner or lock interface. Just look at the hinderer, great knife but steel lock insert is shit. Sorry
the only thing I don't absolutely love is the blade shape... if I could find this frame with a different blade like the more traditional style spider co, die be very interested
I can understand that.. I didn’t love the looks of this knife, but it grew on me in use and time.
EDC-TITANIUM-FRAMELOCK-NO BEARINGS-NO FLIPPER-UNDER $400. Enough said. This is the knife.
i have a mule team 1 in 52100 steel its made in golden colorado
guncotton 1 cool... yeah, I don’t know how they decide where the mule team will be made. Maybe it depends on where the steel is most readily available, or maybe they used to be made in Colorado. Either way, I think they are going to stop the mule team project, which I’m kind of bummed about.
$215?!!??
Time travel dooder!
Lol shits changed since I made this one:)
Your so full of shit.
Ohh...wait...that's me. Never mind your awesome. New sub. Keep it up!! I'm gonna watch some more of your vids to waste a day. Should go pretty fast.
Lol thanks a lot man. Yeah, just a few of my vids should get you through the day🤦🏽♂️ thanks for watching brother!
Couldn’t watch after the 63rd flick open.
63000 other channels to watch bro 👍 and they will probably flick just as many times😉
@@inthepocket7405 what a bitch sphillisa is. Thanks for the vid even after 3 years later.
Nobody is having trouble getting steel from overseas because of tariffs. I work in the shipping industry and I unload thousands of tons of steel a day.
MrAdvantage1 okay, thanks for letting us know👍 I work in the surf industry, and I know a lot of the companies were having trouble getting their products in at port. So I thought maybe the knife industry might might be having some of the same issues receiving their product. That knife comes assembled from Taiwan. Sorry if I had any misinformation here.
InThePocket no big deal. It probably has to do with where it comes from, but also, remember the media doesn’t have to be truthful in spirit when they make a claim, just factually correct. I also know a lot of people at the docks who have a... personal interest in exaggerating the tariffs are slowing things down. If I told you how much steel I might handle I’m a day it would blow your mind. I know it blew mine when I started.
MrAdvantage1 yeah, I shouldn’t have said anything about it. It’s mostly stuff coming from China for the surf stuff, and I was just gabbing here, which I shouldn’t do. That’s cool man... what’s the most exotic stuff you’ve got your hands on?
InThePocket I have no idea. It can’t be too exotic when it’s coming in slabs that can be 1.5-2’ thick, 6’x20’-40’ long. Sometimes we get steel plate, or pipe, but it’s generally always big big quality that I doubt the sexy steels come in.
MrAdvantage1
,lllll
Maybe you could lay those knives on the supple bodies of... my wife tells me that your backround is fine.
