- The UN Security Council voted 14-1 in support of the US-proposed Israel-Gaza ceasefire plan on Monday.
The proposal sets out conditions for a "full and complete ceasefire", the release of hostages held by Hamas, the return of deceased hostages' remains and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners.
The plan includes three phases that would end with a multi-year reconstruction plan for Gaza, which has been largely destroyed due to the fighting.

There are official videos of the session on YT. Russia did not like that there was still so much ambiguity on the ceasefire deal, but abstained rather than voting against (which would be a veto) because it wished to respect the wishes of the Arab states that were in favor.

Why are people so focused on Gaza when there is a war going on in Sudan affecting 20 times as many people and a war in Ukraine affecting even more. Ukraine did not attack Russia, the Christian people of Sudan did not attack the Muslims but gaza did attack Israel.

The UN Security Council backed ceasefire plan at least deserves to be examined very carefully. At least it's an advance on the UN posturing which has taken no account of realities. It offers some hope.
If, hypothetically, Palestinians were granted a state and if Israel were ever to be wiped out, the Palestinian state would be very vulnerable. Its survival could never be guaranteed. It could easily be invaded by a ruthles and powerful adversary that wanted to take its territory. The frequency of invasions throughout history, in which states lose their freedom of action, is a stark and startling fact, overlooked far too often. As it is, superior Israeli military power has guaranteed the basic security of the Palestinian territories, just as the neutral Republic of Ireland was protected against German invasion by the military power of Britain and its allies during the Second War. If Britain had fallen to the Nazis, Ireland would have been next. The protection against potential aggressors provided by Israel's superior power has been a massive advantage for the Palestinians. To live under the control of groups such as ISIS would be one potential alternative to living with Israel as a neighbour - a far more likely outcome than the fantasy world of a harmonious Palestinian state living in perpetual peace.
After D-day, villages, towns and cities in France and other countries were liberated again and again by military action which included bombing and artillery fire and very, very often with substantial civillian casualties. Caen in Normandy was held by strong German forces. It was liberated only after about 80% of the town had been devastated and 3000 civilians had been killed by allied action. Around 60,000 French civilians had been killed by allied bombing by the time France was liberated. To call these civilian deaths 'genocide' carried out by the allies would be a gross mistake. Anyone who claims that allied forces were 'no better than Nazis' for frequent killing of civilians is failing to take into account Nazi killings of civilians, which belonged to a different order of reality - reprisal executions, the mass executions of the Einsatzgruppen and, of course, the Holocaust, the worst set of war crimes in human history.
In extreme circumstances, to overcome fanatical opposition, the armed forces of democratic states often have no alternative but to use extreme force - but not ‘extremist force,’ the methods used by fanatics. To use slight force would be to guarantee defeat. Although technological advances have vastly increased the precision of bombing, these cannot overcome all difficulties, for example those arising in very densely populated neighbourhoods such as Gaza, where Hamas supplies and munitions have often been stored close to civilian buildings - or in civilian buildings. To continue to have the advantage of Israeli protection, Hamas would have had to do this: stop firing rockets, stop breaking ceasefires. But Hamas are very slow learners. A study of military history in depth would show that the Israelis have fought to preserve the Israeli state, to avoid catastrophe, with exceptional standards, very rare in the history of warfare. The accusation of genocide has become a glib, grotesquely unfair, automatic response.
