This is actually a good way to learn Tekken. Play other characters so that when you meet them online in the future, you instinctively know the matchup. I wish more people would do this.
Problem here for me personally is I don’t feel the connection or instant liking towards some characters. All the ones I like I have learnt fairly well, this is about 7 or 8 total But I’m uninterested in learning characters like Victor, Raven and Alisa just to name a random bunch
@@KazamaJoestar Same, i tried learning the matchup like that, but playing characters i don’t like is so boring to me that my brain turns off and the next day i don’t even remember half of what i did because i did everything on pretty much auto pilot while paying more attention to a random RUclips video

As a Reina main, I greatly appreciate this video coming in as second on the list! I can see a lot of moves that I shouldn't have been playing as much as I actually do and hopefully this will help me improve my gameplay too. Thank you for that! One small improvement that I'd do is to show the combos that you might do on the practice screen while waiting for a match. Since this is aimed at beginners they might just play the combos from the challenge/practice section and not know about the optimized ones, but idk if that would be a bit too much to add to your plate
i appreciate this kind of content, not just as a reina main but as a fighting game player as you can see in real time what is immediately apparent/important when interacting with your opponent. you can learn so much in such a short time if you can maintain that focus. thanks for the advice Phi 🙏
These types of videos are what I need. As a little bit above an intermediate player, but lower than advanced. These videos of you talking about what's going on while actively playing help me understand conditioning and adapting to my opponent. Which are a few things I struggle with 😅
Great series Phi! Love everything about the live explanations, the notes on the side and the abiltiy to commentate on your own gameplay while giving insights, please cover as many characters if not all!
Loving this series already even just for your insight on downloading the opponent, and the critical and actively intentional decision-making you use to adjust your game plan and implement counterplay on the fly. Also really appreciating all the small observations that you're making that would otherwise completely go over my head. Looking forward to more!
Did you show your work? How do we know how you arrived at the answer? Me: "--->" Also- Dad: Where did you write down all the problems a second time? I only see one set of notations. Did you solve every problem twice?
This is actually awesome content for this game, because you get to see the gameplay in action and having to adapt when it doesn't instantly work. Thank you, would love to see more like it!
I don't comment much but I wanted to say I found this video super interesting! Felt like you were in your element just talking shop and showing it as you went. Honestly feels like it already helped level up my Tekken intuition and I'm not even done watching yet!👍👍👍👍
Hands down the most helpful video I've ever watched. Recently switched from T7 to 8 (finally) and I've been having a lot of fun with Reina. You taught me some frame traps here and gave me a simple straightforward way to play to her strengths, condition the opponent and respond appropriately. For people who DONT play Reina, this is great for learning to play against her as well. Would loove to see you do this for as many character as possible. I know that's a big ask but I'm sure people would love it. Thanks dude!
Can't wait to see the Victor PP video. This would definitely help trying to get out of Blue ranks maybe apply to get to Tekken King. I swear this series is gonna be wild.
It’s so important seeing what your main looks like in the neutral. Love this series already. From your commentary to the notes you’ve put below you. Keep it up!

This is exactly the type of video I've been looking for. As someone with not a lot of time to play it's great to see examples of what to do in different situations without getting too complex.
You're telling me! I was so much in the weeds of match-up specific things and frustrated about my autopilot, when all I needed to do was chill and play my own game. Hopefully this n=1 sample shows that these videos are worth it! Looking forward to other characters
A little note on frame trapping with heavens wrath 1 after hellsweep. If the 1 counterhits and you transition into sentai you can get sentai 1+2 into heavens wrath 2 guaranteed. If you have heat you can heat dash from heavens wrath 2 for a full launcher for massive damage.
Great vid as always phi. I think the notes you have displaying combos, punishes, frame traps, etc. are great for for learning purposes. I personally prefer the constant explanation while going through ranked. I think it helps being able to see how gameplans play out against actual opponents. Keep up the good work brotha
Great series Phi 👏🏽 I'm a Reina main who hasn't been consistently playing and this was a nice reminder that rock solid basics with just a few of her go-to moves is all you need sometimes. Excited to learn more!
Thanks, this is a cool series. Even if it's not a character I'm learning this helps in learning the gameplans of other characters and developing frame trap familiarity for better defense
Wow this was phenomenal. I hadn't known the Reina MU and never had any interest in playing her but seeing you walk through the gameplan step by step was super interesting! It definitely makes me want to try her, love this new series!

Awesome concept! Can't wait for the Lidia video, but I'm definitely gonna try playing Reina following this. Even if I won't replace my main, at least I'll get a better understanding of each characters!
19:20 So the part you maybe don't know is HW1 whiffs in that +6 scenario depending on the character and what they mashed. It can be really unreliable on smaller hitboxes with evasive moves like Xiaoyu, and HW1 sometimes doesn't reach when you're at tipper range on the hellsweep so you get punished for doing your own frametrap.
damn thats why I was losing agaist 3 different players, I was wondering why this was happening, cant remember what characters were punishing me but I was like damn how can they hit me there is suppose to be a frametrap??! thx for this
Yeah I'd be careful with hw 1 as it can lose easily to ducking and high crushing moves. My go to is hw 2 unless u call out a powercrush or rage art. Safe, chunky mid heat engager that can launch with heat dash. The nice thing about hw1 is that you can heat engage on normal hit by doing hw1 > forward (transition to sentai) > sentai 3. And on counterhit (confirmable!) it's even better with hw1 > sentai 1+2 > hw2 for like 60 damage or a straight up launcher with heat dash. But hw2 in general is just better imo. It does insane damage through rage art armor anyway so you can often kill if they mash. But if they mash on heaven's wrath please consider the hw1 > sentai 1+2 route it will literally explode them
@@kaibiscus 2 can be stepped right and you can get laucnhed as well... Unfortunately, there are 0 completely safe HW options at +6. All of them can be countered, so even at +6 you're always risking.

I enjoy this format quite a bit, good showcases for the different characters, and it's a very compact way of showing relatively simple and effective tools to use with each of them. I feel it makes sense for you to decide on the fly whether there's more value to going into the replays or sticking with playing matches. The only thing I'd add is a bit more of an intro and explaining your thinking process behind your selection of the moves, combos, etc. Doesn't have to be super in-depth, but I think it'd be helpful to get an idea of what to look for when learning a character. Other than that - keep it up :) Also, the series being called PP makes me smile :D Phi Plays is so short already it makes me wonder if you just picked that because it sounds kinda funny^^

Please please do a segment on Yoshimitsu. I'm a new to Tekken player, have only ever played 8, I chose Yoshi to main because of a video I saw of him sliding around in Indian stance which was funny. I've recently gotten to Flame Ruler, and my general take away is I find the most success when I'm playing a Yoshi micro Tekken that breaks Tekken rules and flow - it feels like I'm winning bc playing Yoshi consists of stringing magic tricks together more than having good form. you can also side step foward 4 and if your fast enough you can catch them before the rise and get the crumple animation. it also works for people trying down jab you after heat burst and if anything gives you more advantage if the just block
I think it would be really useful if you took 3~5 min at the beginning of the video in order to explain the basic gameplan you want to establish with the character. It is not always easy to know what are the foundations (key moves and more importantly when to use them) of a character, especially when learning a new one. You could then use that basic gameplan as the backbone of your video (such as "Ok my initial gameplan is not working well, here is why and how I plan to fix it" or "now that I'm confident in establishing my gameplan, here is another layout I want to add"). I know you wrote down the "Good moves" but it doesn't tell the full story (aka when to use them), so I think it would be a nice addition. Anyway this serie is really enjoyable and well explained, I'll definitely watch the upcoming episodes.

This series is amazing Phi! It's a delight to watch your thought process and hopefully it helps us Reina mains climb. Will you get her to GoD tho?

Great vid! Play Azucena next!
I agree with only showing replay for lesser played matchups. I like the 2 matches. Hope Jack 8 is coming soon. Trying to hit Tekken King.
