Thank you for leaving out the music so many others feel they need to put in. The sounds of nature are the best😍
The chickens were waiting for you ,they gathered at the door to welcome you back,
A beautiful video.thanks man
I agree, I go on quick vacations 2 to 4 days max. Same types of concerns and prep.
That's so funny how eager the ducks were to get back into the dam again! I could watch your videos of the ducks and chickens for hours :-)
Thank you! :)
Thank you for your video. You are a lovely down to earth person and it was lovely to hear how happy you were to see the ducks rushing off to the dam.
The simple reassurance that the birds can be set up to be self sufficient but safe for a few days is just what I needed to see. Thank you ❣️
I wish all the chickens and ducks in this world could be treated so well.
And I wish I lived in your neighbourhood!
Looks like a beautiful place to live and you are a really great person to care for your flock as you do.!
Great ideas.Taking really good care of your flock. Thanks
All your birdies look so happy, it’s great to see :)
Your videos are great, I’ve just subscribed.
I loved it. I am in PA, USA, and have been thinking of getting some chickens. I was hoping to see what type of hen house you had, but it seems its something you made yourself. I really enjoyed the video. I will keep you posted in the Spring if everything falls together for me.
Hi Mark,
And many thanks for your kind reply.
When we had chickens and ducks back in the day, we were fortunate enough to have a neighbor who enjoyed looking after them while we were gone, along with our horses, cow, goat and assorted canines. I'm planning on getting a flock when we move next year. I will remember your tips for when we have to go away. Thanks.
You were blessed to have someone reliable to look after your animals so you could go away now and then. Reliable pet/house sitters are very hard to come by here.
This was very helpful! Thanks for sharing.
Always amazing content! Just bought my first chicken coop, Can’t wait to you harvest my first eggs
Very nice video. Now a days DOG CAMS are very popular. I think it will work out very well if you have a designated camera for shooting the day to day life of your chickens, quail and ducks. I am very excited just imagining it esp. because you have a pretty sweet set up.
Excellent set up Mark.
Thanks for the tips. Just got a chicken coop and planning on having a few chickens around here.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one neurotic about my birds, lol. Loved the video, you have a lovely set up
Thanks Victoria yes I'm neurotic too! LOL Cheers :)
Thank you from NJ. Very informative
Awwee,…a happy dad and happy chooks and ducks :)
Thanks mark you really helped me and the free range chickens thanks again for the wonderful video
+Paul Connor-West Hi Paul thank you for taking the time in saying so! Cheers mate :)
Thanks for the video. Very informative.
I hope in a couple years we might get a place with some yard to have some chickens. We love eggs, so it'd be really nice to be able to get our own, and of course chickens are darn adorable. These vids are very helpful on general curiosity for now, and will hopefully be a big help later on :)
Great to hear how you are planning and not rushing in... It's always a learning curve when you do get birds but by doing some good research beforehand really does help! All the best :)
Yooooooooo!!!! thats awesome Im getting ready to go out of town on a hunting trip n with yr help I wont worry bout all my animals so much!!
Love your joint Mark.... it's bonza mate ;)
Nice to see you so happy :)
I love that waterer for your chickens. Gotta figure how where to get one, or how to make one like that. It's nice to see someone who really cares about his animals. Very helpful tips, thank you. Your chickens and ducks look happy. :-)
Thanks for those kind comments and I'm glad you liked the video! Cheers :)
hobbitlovr i
hahaha.... the ducks were so happy at the end! :-)
amazing thankyou for everything you share
+mrbuddhagaz Thanks for taking the time to say so! Cheers :)
a great and simple video. Thank you :-)
+Torquil Harkness Thank you for taking the time to comment and I'm wrapped you enjoyed the video! Cheers :)
Thank you
Thanks for the info! Do you know if ducks will eat worms and ants? We live in an area where slugs and snails aren't very abundant and when allowing them to forage I'd like them to take care of some of our ants and worms in the yard...
they look happy nice video😄
Thank you :)
The ducks at the end of the video pretty funny
Hi,
Great video I have sent to my relative who rears and breads special old fashioned breads of English Chickens. I do not live near her so do not understand how they have there chucks set up water-wise and just wondered how you trained your chucks to peck and drink at the water source?
I am pleased no mr foxes or anything got into your very well managed coop. Have subbed, thanks for the upload.
Take care from a lover but unfortunately also someone who is allergic to feathers!
mrbluenun
+mrbluenun I do love those old English breeds of chickens I have a few Buffs myself and they're terrific birds! Yes the hens do need a little training to use something new but they are very smart animals so learn quickly. Teaching is as simple as tapping the water nipples with a finger and once you show one hen she teaches the rest - easy! Cheers :)
Great set-up my friend. I have ducks chickens and turkeys all together , ducks have a tendancy to muck up my open water supply, even my auto water cups. Any tips to provide cleaner water for the turkeys and chickens?
Thanks Doug, to stop my ducks mucking up the chickens water I raise the chicken drinkers up high with a perch so the hens can get a drink but the ducks can't... :)
If you are struggling to get your chickens away I suggest raisins or grapes
Great Video. best to be safe than sorry they say. You're looking after thier best interests & wellbeing. Just a hint, its probably best not to announce online that you'll be away from home for a period o of time. Keep it general & just talk about what you do generally when you're away. There are crazy/dishonest people out there that might track down where you live & take advantage of there not anyone being home. Cheers.
He probably didn't edit the video and upload it until he came back.
i know this is really late but what can you do for ducklings ?
Nice vid mate, I have 8 chickens and want to get 2 ducks, because I've never kept ducks any suggestions and can they live with the chooks okay, what sorta shelter for them ect would be good cheers
Thanks Ben, yeah I was a little apprehensive about getting ducks initially but now I'm very happy with them and the short answer is yes ducks and chickens are fine to keep together in a backyard setting. The minimum they need is a large bucket of water to dunk their heads and a dry place to nest/sleep for the night. I have written a small article on my blog exactly about keeping ducks and chickens together if you would like to read it, cheers mate :) www.selfsufficientme.com/blog/view/1402/can_you_keep_ducks___chickens_together_
what is the really big water pan made out of. that's great
It's a poly tank :)
If you are struggling to get your chickens away into there run or coop I suggest using raisins or grapes
+Paul Connor-West Thanks Paul for the tip on raisins or grapes! Cheers :)
What are the white ducks?
Nice one Mark. Boys those duckies flew for their pond. Must've been desperate for a bath in their big water. What do you do with their internal pond water? Does it have good nutrients in it? Have tried feeding them cabbage if icebergs are not available? I didn't see much evidence of the lettuce on your return. Good one mate. Thanks again. David :)
Hey that would be good. I've been watching videos about using ducks as Snail and Slug destroyers in the garden. Apparantly much less invasive than chooks! Webbed feet not claws that scratch.
What if your going away in the winter?
Have you ever considered a livestock guardian dog such as an Anatolian Shepherd dog for security for your chickens and ducks? A well trained livestock guardian will make short work of wild dogs or foxes should they attempt to prey on your poultry.
How long do the eggs last, say you go away for a week can you still come gather the eggs and eat em?
One life One love yes they will be good for a while as long as they don’t eat them most chickens don’t eat them
If i have 100 chickens...how big the Chicken COOP should be?
The only reason im scared of getting ducks is because I go on vacation usually during summer and holidays, I’m not a farmer or anything like that, i have never owned farm animals.. but I think I’m ready to raise ducklings
i have ducks and they poop in their water. how long do you go away? Also, do you have a system to fill it up if it emptys out?
With our internal pond holding 200 litres of water and several other containers we can go away for about two weeks no problem. No, I don't have any auto watering/refill system (at the moment) but I may investigate it in the future. Cheers :)
do you have any thing in the container to help them to get out of it easier?
where'd ya get it
Jane I have a powder coated wire grate they use as a ramp to get in and out. :)
For $100 you buy a electric fencer . All you need is one wire around your pen approx 12 inches of the ground
No dog raccoon or fox , not even a bear will try to get in.
It's actually very funny to see a raccoon touching it and start running in the opposite direction .
Dam Time!!! Woohoo!!!
LOL - not my best interpretation of a duck... Cheers :)
😷😁👍
Have you tried peas with your ducks
Gordon Pilcher Only via some garden or table scraps but I haven't specifically fed them peas no. Is there a reason you ask?
I've grown them and just pod them because they are high in protein they work the same way as silver bet do with chooks I found the yokes developed a better colour and stronger flavour I think you could let them to in amongst the peas and eat the foliage equally it started when my wife found that she thaw frozen peas and feed them so I took it a step further once I'm in our new property I'll experiment with just letting into the pea area, ducks aren't as destructive in the garden as chooks. I first started with ducks doing duckaponcs replacing the fish and found it worked excellently
Well I know my ducks adore corn they nibble on the old cobs for ages so I suppose peas filled with all those great nutrients would be a good duck feed supplement! Yes, ducks are much less destructive than chooks but it's very interesting you mentioning duckaponics because I use the dirty water from our internal pen raised duck pond as a rich fertiliser mix for the garden and it does wonders.
I have never heard of people using ducks instead of fish in aquaponics however you've just given me my next big research project to work on and several ideas!
Ducks produce a lot of in water effluent and now that you mention it of course it would be as good as or even better than fish - that's a fantastic concept and thanks for bringing it to my attention. Cheers mate :)
I first posted a video on RUclips as experiment a couple of years ago and now I see others doing it the water is extremely high in nutrient value. We jut waiting our house to be built and then will be back into it all again My wife is looking at alpacas to help guard the chocks & ducks from foxes. 1 thing always leads to another
It is neverending but lots of fun! Hope the build goes well - very exciting :)
no worries about birds of prey?
+kurumais That's a good question and the short answer is no, but, large birds of prey aren't prevalent in our area. Eagles and hawks do come by occasionally and what I have found the hens doing is to move under cover either in the coop or the holding pens I have open when they aren't in use. My old rooster used to spot a prey bird a mile away and he used to call a warning (like a throaty screech) and all the hens would run under cover. I've never had an attack on my hens or ducks but I have seen an attempt by a hawk and an owl once trying to get through into my quail pen. Having said that, If I were in an area with more eagles I would definately have to have the full pen enclosed. Cheers :)
Self Sufficient Me thanks for the reply and hope your streak continues
Water Nipples what’s the website for those nipples really really like those! :)
i think u missed security ....not a safe pen
