wow! Her youth sounds almost identical to the stories my grandmother tells! Keeping milk and butter in a deep well to keep it cold, cooking in the fireplace and hanging newspapers and cardboard on the walls to keep the wind from coming through the cracks, and working in the cotton and sugar cane fields! She was from central Louisiana though...I suppose life was hard all over the Deep South during those days...
