  • ITS RED!
We finally reach the red episode, the Vader episode, the one, the only. PEAK Star War. Enjoy folks because Ahh! The following episode is rather skippable.
Barely anything happens, though perhaps that's a lie... they do kinda ruin Baylan with this one, so there's that...and hey, plenty happen with our coverage of it o/

I'm currently rereading Heir to the Empire/Thrawn Trilogy and lamenting what replaced it (and Legends as a whole). Luke's characterisation in particular is such a highlight I forgot just HOW f***ing great it is. Both his positive/aspirational aspects and his doubts/character flaws referenced in the early chapters of are the most natural ways to continue his character post RotJ.

They don't even NEED the ship, we know this, because you can see even in the short clips, there's a whale's tentacles RESTRAINING Thrawn, so it's BUSTED open the SPACE ship, but they're all just fine. So just jump in the whale's MOUTH or something and tell it to go back and drop you off. DONE! Thrawn is defeated, no sacrifices necessary.
But yeah, they'd all be totally screwed if Thrawn just IMMEDIATELY took a shuttle up to the fuck ring and told them to leave. THEY CAN MAKE THIS JOURNEY AS OFTEN AS THEY WANT NOW, THEY'VE GOT DIRECTIONS AND THE TECH TO MAKE THE TRIP! Thrawn is the important one! Just put him on the ship, with as many people as fit on his shuttle, load him onto the ring, and then LEAVE, then when you've got him set up in whatever base you've got ready (cause they MUST have plans surely) come back and board everyone else then just go BACK. Do this as often as you want, because you are the ONLY fucking people in the galaxy with all the necessary tech and coordinates to do this. You have an UNREACHABLE secret base with which you can buy as MUCH time as you want.

The majority of people were either pissed because he rose up the ranks so quickly or weirded out, not really impressed. The thing that really annoys me about episode 5 is that it's such a huge missed opportunity. All of it is just memberberries, hallow fan service, and pointless fighting. But what if it was better.
Imagine this: Ahsoka awakes and meets Anakin's ghost or whatever, the scene plays out the same way up until the "live or die part". Anakin says the sane thing, but instead of fighting Ahsoka-for some reason-he instead takes her on a little journey of character study, self growth, and reminiscence mixed with, yes, fan service, but not Dave's shriveled up memberberries.
The journey starts at the beginning, when Anakin first met Ahsoka during the battle of Christophsis. They can reminisce about how Ahsoka was so young and arrogant like Anakin, and how Anakin was unqualified to be Ahsoka's master, but still put in the effort. From there, their journey takes them to various other places and moments in the Clone Wars that are important to the Ahsoka and her relationship with Anakin; along the way, he makes several points about how much she grew and learned, becoming an incredible Jedi and something like a sister to him.
Eventually, though they arrive at the point when Ahsoka left Anakin. Long story short, Ahsoka was framed for committing terrorism that was actually done by her fellow Jedi, Barriss Offee. Anakin did everything he could to defend Ahsoka and even brought Barriss before the council before Ahsoka was sentenced, securing her freedom, but Ahsoka reached her limit. The entire time during the fiasco, the Jedi did nothing to help her and were blinded to politics; Windu even tried to say the whole was her "great trial." Realizing how full of shit the Jedi were, Ahsoka left the order and never came back, leaving Anakin. With this history in mind, adult Ahsoka and Anakin can talk about how the failure of Jedi; they were supposed to be peacekeepers and paragons of wisdom, but were willing to let one of their own be sacrificed because of politics.
Their journey finally ends when Ahsoka finally addresses the big, black, armored elephant in the room. It doesn't just come out of nowhere, for there are several instances of Anakin's dark side throughout the Clone Wars, and perhaps the one thing her character hasn't moved past is Vader; encountering him and discovering his identity left a mark on her, and she never got the closure that Luke did. You could even add in the whole thing about her being afraid of becoming like him-somehow. Anakin realizes her fear and decides she must face Vader, and so takes her to a vision of the Jedi temple during order 66, where she confronts Vader; not the armored version, or Anakin with yellow eyes, but a shadowy, demonic abomination that represents his evil and Ahsoka's fear. The confrontation is not just a fight but also a battle of wits and ideals, like Luke against Vader and Palpatine. Obviously, Ahsoka wins and conquers her fears.
The rest of the episode has Ahsoka and Anakin in a restored Jedi temple, where they just...talk, talk like the best of friends that haven't seen each in ages; Ahsoka can even mention she met Luke. And so, with Ahsoka's training complete and her fears conquered, the episode ends with her waking up in the water and being rescued.

I don’t like how they used Anakin’s signature move in this show. In its other instances in the prequels, it did fit the fights to block his back and it feels more natural in the movement of the whole choreographies. Here, you can just see the key jangling. He is so far from Ahsoka and he clearly doesn’t need to do his move. It was just a show off moment and it ruins it imo

I only just now realized that the names Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati are a reference to Skoll and Hati, the giant wolves in Norse mythology who chase the sun and moon. It would've been interesting to see what allusions to the myth are carried over in these characters and how it influences them, but odds are it's just another instance of Filoni trying to flex his nerd cred by offhandedly referencing stuff he likes.

Furloni loves wolves, it's why most of his characters have some sort of reference to wolves, it's why he originally wanted to make Ahsoka look more like a wolf, it's why he revealed that wolves were the ones to teach the first jedi the force and that jedi spirits turn into spirit wolves.

I'm always like... weirded out over the level of worship Thrawn gets in this series. Like, *GENUINE* worship.
It's one thing for the fandom at large to really like him, and insist he could work tactical miracles, because the fandom has the knowledge of the full scope of his work, uncolored by in-universe bias and lack of information. We, the audience, can say "Well Thrawn totally woulda kicked the yuzang vong's asses if he were around! He has the biggest ol blue brain of them all and is totally coolio big smarticus and would like... drift thirty star destroyers around the sun to turbo megacharge their laser and esplode them all!" because it's all speculative. We have meta knowledge, we know that, if Thrawn were alive for the vong invasion, the part he'd play in that would have demanded tactical excellence from him beyond what we got in Heir to the Empire. He'd quite literally need to be a mythically potent military strategist, and we'd probably have gotten that, even if factually, Thrawn was just a really good tactician who excelled at predicting (and exploiting) his opponents.
The people *IN* the universe don't know what we know though. Especially in Disney's universe.
In Disney's universe, Thrawn was an alien imperial commander who saw a meteoric rise in the ranks despite being an alien, but who got his ass kicked by a bunch of kids on Lothal and then got beat by Space Whales before going missing in, apparently, a DIFFERENT. GALAXY.
Let me be clear. Thrawn has like... 4 minor victories under his belt, 2 major victories, and literally NONE of them were against the rebellion (Luke, Leia, none of that, his wins predate them, he doesnt even fight anyone with force bullshit he has to account for in Disney's canon). Then he eats this MAJOR loss at Lothal, to children, which literally banishes him to a completely different galaxy. THAT is the profile of Thrawn in-universe.
And the imperial remnant not ONLY is willing to expend every resource they can muster to go get him, but, they also treat him like the second coming of Palpatine. People stand around, beating sticks together, chanting his name like he's the great Khan of space and conquered half the galaxy and the only thing that stopped him from snuffing the rebellion out was him getting spirited away by space whales.
It's INSANE. They didn't even LIKE Thrawn by the way, the Imperial Navy fucking hated him, because they ARE racist, quite literally, 'you're an alien so fuck you'.
It's like... it'd be ONE thing right? If Thrawn conquered this other galaxy. If he set himself up as a demagogue, exploited a tribal belief in some celestial savior and then used his superior tactics and technology to conquer an entire galaxy in the interim between Rebels (which is canon to THIS show, much as it doesnt seem like it is) which would demonstrate him abilities to the desperate Imperial Remanent. He has resources they NEED, he'd have ships, loyal and passionate soldiers, equal-to or GREATER than the galatic republic. He would be an ENORMOUS asset, even if in-universe his track record against fighting force users has been less than stellar.
But he's not that. He hasn't done any of that. He's just a blue dude who got his ass kicked by a Hera and her weird friends and space whales.

Well I mean, you know what the answer is gonna be right? That there's just nothing here besides like, force floopisms the suddenly-not-extinct Night Sister council of hags are probably pondering. Or, rather, there's nothing of note here, in this *ENTIRELY NEW GALAXY*.
Because nobody, not ONE person on the writing "team" for this show considered the sheer *SCOPE* of what adding a *NEW. GALAXY.* does to Star Wars as a whole, littleown their own story.
You know what they could have done? Filoni *could* have just sent Thrawn to some unmapped bit of the Unknown Regions. Beyond the border of the populated Galaxy. He could have said "Oh yeah, it's a planet at the edge of the Galaxy. It's so far out there in the empty void that nobody COULD feasibly chart it and come back to tell the tale, the resource sink in going there by the standard means we have wouldn't be worth the information we'd get from going there."
That'd explain why the space whales can get there, since they're fuckin porgbillion years old and can naturally travel through hyperspace. They don't have to worry about the limitations of technology, which *IS* a running theme in star wars, that the natural world is inherently more capable than machines. You could literally make it a rogue planet. You could EVEN keep it as the TRUE homeplanet of the nightsisters, give them the backstory that they're dark side floopism force magic like... harvested their sun, and they sent their whole planet through hyperspace, the only ones left in standard space where the ones already off planet, who had to find new homes and adapt, which would also explain why Dathomir is such a miserable fucking shithole - it was NEVER meant to be a permanant residence. They just got STUCK there when dumb forcetisms hurled their homeworld into the void.
*THAT* event could *ALSO* tie directly into Thrawn and his newfound hatred of "magic". He didn't USED to hate the force, it was just a "thing". A tool, like any other, he just happened to be unable to use the tool himself. But, with the knowledge that it's a tool that can *misbehave?* That the force isn't a "skill" that certain people possess and can exert a measurable control over during development, but instead, a temperamental, unreliable *SUPER WEAPON* that can, without warning, hurl an ENTIRE planet, RANDOMLY, into hyperspace? You don't even get to CHOOSE the direction, so it can't be turned *INTO* a horrific weapon to threaten people with, it's just a fucking act of GOD at that point?
I can imagine a tactician like Thrawn would be *GENUINELY* spiteful of it then. Especially since it would mean Palpatine could have fucked him anyway even IF he promised not to use the Death Star on the Chiss, which was one of Thrawn's concerns in Disney's canon. It'd mean that Darth Vader/Anakin, Palpatine, these Night Sisters and Sith and ALL the jedi are running around, using this 'Force', for parlor tricks, without any heed to the potentially catastrophic consequences, from his point of view. This would *EVEN* tie into the bullshit Kreia was going on about in KOTOR2 and people eat that shit up like Hassan eats up them nuggies.
That WHOLE thing there is the most fanservicey bullshit I could think of. It gives EVERYONE a handjob, ESPECIALLY star wars fans who'd get to point at all this shit and be like "LOOK! LOOK! A STAR WAR HAPPENED! I REMBER THAT STAR WAR THING FROM WHEN I SAW IT IN THE STAR WAR THING I LIKED BEFORE! I LOVED THAT STAR WAR! I LOVE THIS STAR WAR NOW BECAUSE IT REMIND ME OF THAT OLD STAR WAR! YAAAAAAYYYY!!!" and it didn't take me five minutes.
It already makes more sense than an *ENTIRE* galaxy, new, undiscovered by any fucking sensing equipment (our OWN telescopes have found new galaxies, we know what their fucking planets are made of for christ sake), and, as it turns out, there's *NOTHING* fucking here.

Ahsoka dies by the hand of Vader her former master. I think this was the perfect ending to her character, and I gave Dave praise for allowing this to happen... then the World between Worlds was introduced and had Ezra bring Ahsoka back through that time travel... honestly her dying by Vader was the best ending I think. • @shamboholic
    @shamboholic 11 месяцев назад +35

This series is really difficult to watch in the Kenobi way, the crew outlined how it could’ve been done as “Ben lives as a bounty hunter and has a come to Jesus moment hiding Luke”. In the same way, I find it hard to consume Ahsoka because SO MUCH is workable but broken because this company has no one willing to shave/buff/edit ideas beyond “isn’t it cool” or “the stans people will love this”:
-Space whales. Star Trek and Stellaris both handle this fine. You can have big creatures that fold spacetime/have adapted to migrate long distances. Maybe they feed off solar winds or are based on minerals they gather in nebula. Maybe they adapted in a gas giant planet so they’re super big. But here they literally are just sea whales made bigger and inexplicably fly, their anatomy, their mouths, their hyperspace engine tentacles(???), their whole existence is confusing and messy. It’s laughable only because it’s so ill conceived and hamfistedly presented.
-Incompetent Republic. I’ve waxed on this before, but there’s a logical in universe reason the Republic could be broken here. Unifying existential enemy (Empire) is gone so now conflicts between the Rebels’ internal factions could grow over the spoils. Systems terrorized by the last central government could refuse a powerful military and after paying for a rebellion they insist on a looser, more “you’re on your own” attitude of self-defense, maybe there’s 5 different groups of planets that band together national guards while they decommission the Imperial Navy. The traumatized galaxy is relearning self government and that rarely goes well in real life (see: former Soviet Union) and Leia is doing her best but is one woman. Great opportunity to show that winning the peace is often harder than the war itself.
-Dark Jedi: They’ve bungled this since TLJ. Is Baylon searching for power? Is he disillusioned because the Jedi didn’t live up to their name, or does he feel abandoned? Is he searching for a more aggressive sense of justice as his Order was built for, or bringing order, or vengeance, or what? Kylo Ren rejecting Jedi and Sith alike was the one decent idea in TLJ but it went nowhere in TROS and since then has gotten even messier. Does Luke advise the Republic? Has Luke tried to reconcile the new order’s rules with the old order’s failures and vapid arrogance? Is he concerned at all about these threats? Nowhere to be found.
-Ahsoka and Sabine: Why did we get scenes that Sabine is learning first-week lessons in the Force if they already had a preexisting master-student relationship? Why write an offscreen backstory and falling out and then still write scenes that feel like the start of that relationship? Why not have Sabine get looped into the hunt for Ezra and while working with Ashoka start the training process, so it’s not out of left field that she has Force abilities and perhaps the falling out occurs precisely over the Ezra issue?
From the get go, Disney has seen this as an easy cash grab and had no commitment to providing a real story, it’s just “whatever will put asses in seats and move merch”. Lucas was a craven merchandiser too but at least he wanted to hook you on his world and sell you toys that brought it to life. No one at Disney has even the passing thought to second draft any idea, no one pushes back or says “well what’s the logic here, how does this work”. No one loves it enough to put in that effort, not even the fans’ dear Filoni, the “best” (relatively) hacks only love how KEWL their own fan fiction is irrespective of whether it fits and couldn’t care less about making something lasting. It will stay this way until there’s a clean house. Worldbuilding, character, and themes all lose to KEWL. I gave up on Star Wars a long time ago, but to those who ask “then why do you care so much”, I say, one, because I cared deeply for it at one time, and two, because it’s like watching a dear loved one’s corpse get exhumed and then defiled by people who claim to love them. Screw everyone at Lucasfilm.

The vision should have been about Ahsoka fighting alongside Bo Katan during the siege of Mandalore, and she should have been feeling more guilty than Bo Katan because she was the one who fought with the faction that later becomes the Empire, the Faction that responsible for Mandalore's downfall, instead of feeling bad because people die in war. She should be having this vision considering the fact that her apprentice is a Mandalorian.

I have to put this in here somewhere just for the sake of my fucking sanity.
In Heir to the Empire (and the two following novels) Grand Admiral Thrawn was the preeminent antagonist. He was a Chiss commander who replaced Palpatine after he died and the Empire was broken. With barely any resources left and no political power worth speaking of Thrawn attempted to upset the Republic and reinstate the Empire before it died completely. One of the amazing choices that Timothy Zahn, the writer of this and several other amazing Star Wars novels, made was reversing the roles in the classic Star Wars conflict: making the good guys the overwhelming force and the bad guys the underdogs.
What made Thrawn such an amazing character was his incredible ability to anticipate his opponents decisions by studying their cultural heritage. There was multiple scenes in the Heir to the Empire trilogy where Thrawn made a point of talking about the culture and particularly the art of a particular society that he was either invading or subjugating. One particular scene he even referenced a particular new trend in his opponent's artistic development in recent years that allowed him to anticipate what kind of military response they would make to his attack.
Even more than this was his unusual strategies. One notable example is he wanted to isolate Coruscant to allow him to freely maneuver in Republic space for a little bit and so what he did was he cloaked a bunch of asteroids and used a tractor beam to release them into decaying orbits in Coruscant's atmosphere to force Coruscant to put up their planetary shield for a lengthy period of time, thereby limiting their communications and preventing anyone from leaving the planet. A brilliant strategy that accomplished exactly what he desired.
Ultimately he was undone by the rebellion of his personal guards. His personal guards were entirely comprised of a specific race of aliens that were highly agile and viciously loyal . Thrawn managed to achieve their loyalty by tricking them into thinking that he saved their planet from ecological devastation when in reality Thrawn himself was causing the problems on their planet in order to keep their race constantly in need of his "assistance". They turned on his when the trick was revealed and they killed him as he watched the remnants of the Empire die around him, signaling the complete end of the Empire and the beginnings of the era known as "The New Jedi Order", which grew out of the new Jedi temple that Luke built on Yavin IV during these events (a far better path for him than the shit Disney did to him).
This stupid and ridiculous interpretation of Thrawn is just a vapid and hollow as the rest of this series and the entirety of Disney Star Wars as a whole. All we ever needed was accurate movie adaptations of the Thrawn trilogy to jumpstart a new era of Star Wars content, but instead Disney and their retarded executives decided to dump all of that into the trash, state "we didn't have any source material", and then shit out this garbage over and over again. Star Wars' legacy is dead as long as this shitty company controls its output.
EDIT: Oh, for anyone that reads this rant, I should add that this bullshit with Thrawn being obsessed with honor to the point of his self destruction is complete bullshit, the original character would never have done stupid moves like this.

Ok so for episode 6, I just quickly googled Hyperspace Route, or Hyperlane as they have like 6 different names for some reason.
The wiki page is very short, it's like ONE entry. Here's the most important part.
"Hyperlanes were routes through space in which a spaceship could safely travel without colliding with a body in space, or some other phenomenon such as a black hole."
So, it should be quite easy to get to a new galaxy. There's nothing between galaxies, galaxies are where the stuff in the universe is. That's what makes them galaxies. So getting to another galaxy is just a matter of finding it, tracking it, and then jumping to it. You can drop out of hyperspace and then do another jump too, that's SO common in the galaxy pirates would camp those areas in the routes and attack ships. So you don't even need so many hyperdrives, you can just take longer to get there.
The dangerous part is finding hyperlanes WITHIN galaxies, cause that's obviously quite dangerous. If Thrawn is so important, they didn't need a map. They just needed to go to this galaxy and have droids that can map hyperspace routes. With the resources they put into this absurd ring thing, they could absolutely make DOZENS even HUNDREDS of probe like droids specifically designed to look for hyperlanes.
This show treats a hyperlane like hyperdrives just don't work if you're not in one, like it's a physical tunnel that hyperdrives let you dip into.
They could be TOTALLY silent by using their resources much more intelligently and just sneak out of the galaxy and spend more time looking for Thrawn. They could set up a base, establish a foothold in this galaxy, set up listening equipment and scanners to look for Thrawn even faster, then they could start conquering this OTHER galaxy and when they've achieved enough power they could assault the star wars galaxy in force from MULTIPLE angles. That'd be PRETTY fucking cool. Thrawn's an alien too, you can even say he can live like 200 years and just bring him in and THAT'S the fucking sequel trilogy, not the SHIT we got. It's Thrawn returning with an army created in another galaxy, an army composed of SITH that the new Jedi Order must battle.
Instead we got Marey Sue and her band of people she's known an hour total.

OH FUCK I JUST SAW THE SCENE WHERE SHE SCREAMS AT THE ALIEN PACKHORSE!
Oh nobody else I've seen review it has commented on that scene. Ok, let's do this.
Ahem. So, I'm going to be GENEROUS as I can possibly be. I'm going to assume this animal has the temperament and training of a Warhorse.
Warhorses were a specific breed of horse that had the skittishness bred out of them and were trained basically to follow orders, period. They were very expensive, because they were very well trained animals and made you a fucking beast on the battlefield.
So here's how they would work. You ride into battle on your warhorse and that horse will do what you say, PERIOD. If you make it gallop towards a group of soldiers, it will charge and it will go THROUGH those fucking soldiers. A normal horse, if it gets spooked, and many things can spook it these are PREY animals, it will rear up and throw you, very likely injuring you badly. Warhorses don't do that, or it's MUCH harder to get them to be afraid. Now if you need to get OFF your horse for some reason and continue to battle, maybe it's getting too dangerous for your horse, as it's becoming a target. You DON'T want your horse to die, again, EXPENSIVE and very useful.
So if you dismount, that horse will be TRAINED to run away, because if you get off it, you aren't using it, it needs to be somewhere safe. It'll either run out of the battle or back to like its handlers or something. Whatever it's trained to do, it's NOT trained to stick around and start kicking, that's how it dies, and then you've lost loads of money for no reason. When you want it to come back, you whistle or give whatever signal it's trained to respond to and it'll follow that sound and come back to you.
So being as GENEROUS as I can be, if that animal is trained as a warhorse was trained, and it's VERY clearly an alien horse, it doesn't have any big claws or fangs or even horns, then it did EXACTLY what it should have done and Sabine is a huge cunt for getting angry at it when ALL it could possibly do was get in her way and get killed. Probably BY Sabine given how shit she is with blasters.

Star Wars, even as a caricature, exists far more in the memories and head canon of fans than it does in the studios at this point. Filoni takes full advantage of that by letting these people see what they want to see - he creates as blank an experience as possible, so these desperate fans can project as much of their own Star Wars onto it as possible.
Case in point, Thrawn is not threatening, or imposing, or anything, but I’ve seen fans describe him as such because he MUST BE and they are willing to see him as such because they couldn’t stand the disappointment of that NOT being the case. Filoni’s utterly blank writing is not a mistake, it’s a feature, for this very reason.

The kid's name is Jacen? ffs Filoni can't come up with anything on his own. Whether he takes references from other things or just straight canabalizes the EU that Disney-LucasFilm decided to kill off to make their own stuff, until that stuff failed and they got desperate. So Filoni takes Thrawn & Heir to the Empire, takes that story from Luke, and gives this hack job storyline to his girl boss OC, Ahsoka. He can't even name the kid of Kanan and Hera without stealing the name Jacen from the EU. The EU had Jacen Solo decades before. They already did Jacen Solo dirty by stealing his concept, butchering it, and making the utter joke of a character known as Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. Just leave Timothy Zahn's creations alone already.
