I am 35 years old and I feel healthier now than I did in my early 20's. See what happened was I gave up alchohol, increased my water and organic food intake, took up yoga and meditation. Now I don't get sick (like ever), and haven't been to a doctor in years. Our bodies are more capable than we could ever imagine.
I am male and in my 70's. I had reason to look at a plant free diet for my health after a lifetime of high plant food diet that left me with a very ordinary health outcome. I accepted my health then as normal as I knew no better. After the change to totally plant free my health has improved immensely. Practically beyond recognition in daily functioning. This is overall not just in any single issue. I will let others do their own researching as I am not about to get into any debate. This may not suit others. I believe blood type has something to do with it, maybe, in ones ability to cope with plant matter. In my case it most certainly was. How one handles stress is also a determining factor in health outcomes.
I feel so much anger towards these people, but we are of the same creation. Our creation is one! WE can only synchronize. To think we are better than creation, is only an illusion. This will cause us much sorrow. I do not wish sorrow! Only love/understanding...pls, all of you have the capabilities and understanding. Give your energy towards love and understanding!
I notice the debate stuck mostly to the implications of human gene manipulation and only briefly touch on plants and animals which with much thinner ethical veils on both are the more immediate threat. Also the advances in analytical AI systems could greatly accelerate advances in genetic manipulation to the point of it spiraling well out of our control.
The U.S. regulatory departments in government are run by big pharma and biotech employees that make the laws, policies and those that lobby government. The US government decided they won't treat CRISPR as being GMO so now the industry can do as they like and not even inform you. No regulatory oversight at all just like with GMO foods but worse.
After taking university genetics and molecular biology courses, I see genetics as so freaking complicated in terms of regulation, repair mechanisms, differential gene expression, robustness, etc, etc that I can't imagine the scenario people are freaking out about with designer babies or super-human soldiers. So much of genetics is not understood, not just about specific traits, but about how pathways operate. And much of genetic engineering in a lab is shooting in the dark and hoping a certain percent of your attempts were successful. It's extraordinarily difficult to edit single nucleotides or drop whole exons in precise targeting. As far as CRISPR itself, the machinery could bind to other locations within the genome and act at a non-target site (yay, unintended consequences) because CRISPR complexes target relatively small sequence domains. Hell, even introducing CRISPR reagents into the tissue of interest is a challenge (no, it won't just jump across the plasma membrane at the will of the scientist). Precision medicine is the future. It is so exciting that people with a range of conditions can soon have higher quality of and potentially extended lifespans. Until we all become educated enough on the technology, we can't begin to understand its implications- so until then, how about focus on how much suffering will be (and already has been!) reduced.
Just because there is the technology to do this, the potential to be misused is GREAT. You are correct in saying there has not been enough research in the RISK involved. Humans are the one experimented on.

We know how it works and its issue is primarily that of efficiency. Risks as far as the layperson’s concern are roughly predictable, and when an unintended consequence arises, the organism is studied + genome sequenced to trace the mishap. “Mistakes” generate questions of “how?” and form the basis of subsequent research. Why are you not concerned about RNAi? TALENs? Zinc finger nuclease (ZFNs)? Antisense oligonucleotides? These are all basic molecular tools for targeted gene regulation used as early as the mid-'90s (antisense oligos since the ‘70s!), and yet there wasn’t a public outcry until crispr, which is a naturally occurring system that accomplishes the same goal for less money. My initial comments on needing more knowledge and assessing the risks were academic in nature, not to be read as an endorsement of public panic. If you want more clarification, feel free to follow up, and unless you specify what risk you're referring to, I'd suggest anyone reading your comment blow it off.

Doudna says that over the course of her career she has seen increasing distrust of science. This interview is one example why. No real challenge to what scientists wish to do has been presented. Scientists are expert at developing knowledge. But they aren't in a position to objectively examine our relationship with knowledge. These two things are chronically confused, particularly by scientists.

I don't believe that's entirely her fault though. From her perspective, she may want to delve deeper on certain topics or expand on the information she's poured countless hours into procuring, but presenting that to the greater world would/could pose a threat not only to her career, but her life. Dr. Doudna, Way back in 1971 when I was in collge and majoring in Psycy an Biochem a professor asked me what I was going to do with it. I said well, the first thing we have to do is figure out how genes and chronosomes are related to disease and maybe behaviour. The professor at a SF Bay Area college said - You are wasting your time, there is no way we can get into anything as small as a gene or chronosome, go home and have babies and forget about it. Uh hum, sure thing. I kept following the field and 10 years later Dr.J, Craig Vinter did exactly what I said we needed to do. It took him 13 years, but he came up with the hardware and software and everything needed to sequence genes which didn't exist at the time the professor told me It couldn't be done. I've since kept following the field and reading about the Tumor Suppressor gene in relation to cancer - my cool big brother died of cancer a while back and I have a question for you. I understand genes are binary, either on or off. If that is so can't we turn the TSG on by crispering out the mutated sequence and replacing it with the correct sequence that turns the tumor suppressor gene on.?
Let's watch closely to see if Doudna ever addresses the fact that science is also giving these tools to those who are not interested in ethical guidelines, nor committed to following any rules which may be established by bodies like the U.N. I am currently working in a CRISPR lab in a top tier healthcare/research institution. I find it quite intriguing and exciting that so many people from the general public express a genuine and deep interest in the topic of CRISPR-based gene editing, almost in the same way that so many people developed a passion for computers during the digital revolution in the 20th century.

Scientist always view things in terms of Logic, never Spirit. They seem totally void of understanding that concept. Spirit comes thru Music and Art and Creation. am studying to be a genetic engineer, and i truly believe that we should have heavy heavy restrictions on gene editing. it's too good to pass up, but there can be so much done that is wrong. i'd love to fix many issues using gene editing but only if it doesn't destroy ecosystem or changes humans for cosmetic purposes.

I am 35 years old and I feel healthier now than I did in my early 20's. See what happened was I gave up alchohol, increased my water and organic food intake, took up yoga and meditation. Now I don't get sick (like ever), and haven't been to a doctor in years. Our bodies are more capable than we could ever imagine.

I am male and in my 70's. I had reason to look at a plant free diet for my health after a lifetime of high plant food diet that left me with a very ordinary health outcome. I accepted my health then as normal as I knew no better. After the change to totally plant free my health has improved immensely. Practically beyond recognition in daily functioning. The U.S. regulatory departments in government are run by big pharma and biotech employees that make the laws, policies and those that lobby government. After taking university genetics and molecular biology courses, I see genetics as so freaking complicated in terms of regulation, repair mechanisms, differential gene expression, robustness, etc, etc that I can't imagine the scenario people are freaking out about with designer babies or super-human soldiers. So much of genetics is not understood, not just about specific traits, but about how pathways operate. And much of genetic engineering in a lab is shooting in the dark and hoping a certain percent of your attempts were successful. It's extraordinarily difficult to edit single nucleotides or drop whole exons in precise targeting. As far as CRISPR itself, the machinery could bind to other locations within the genome and act at a non-target site (yay, unintended consequences) because CRISPR complexes target relatively small sequence domains. Hell, even introducing CRISPR reagents into the tissue of interest is a challenge (no, it won't just jump across the plasma membrane at the will of the scientist).
Precision medicine is the future. It is so exciting that people with a range of conditions can soon have higher quality of and potentially extended lifespans. Until we all become educated enough on the technology, we can't begin to understand its implications- so until then, how about focus on how much suffering will be (and already has been!) reduced.

We know how it works and its issue is primarily that of efficiency. Risks as far as the layperson’s concern are roughly predictable, and when an unintended consequence arises, the organism is studied + genome sequenced to trace the mishap. “Mistakes” generate questions of “how?” and form the basis of subsequent research. Why are you not concerned about RNAi? TALENs? Zinc finger nuclease (ZFNs)? Antisense oligonucleotides? These are all basic molecular tools for targeted gene regulation used as early as the mid-'90s (antisense oligos since the ‘70s!), and yet there wasn’t a public outcry until crispr, which is a naturally occurring system that accomplishes the same goal for less money. My initial comments on needing more knowledge and assessing the risks were academic in nature, not to be read as an endorsement of public panic. If you want more clarification, feel free to follow up, and unless you specify what risk you're referring to, I'd suggest anyone reading your comment blow it off.

I don't believe that's entirely her fault though. It took him 13 years, but he came up with the hardware and software and everything needed to sequence genes which didn't exist at the time the professor told me It couldn't be done.
I've since kept following the field and reading about the Tumor Suppressor gene in relation to cancer - my cool big brother died of cancer a while back and I have a question for you. I understand genes are binary, either on or off. If that is so can't we turn the TSG on by crispering out the mutated sequence and replacing it with the correct sequence that turns the tumor suppressor gene on.?

I find it quite intriguing and exciting that so many people from the general public express a genuine and deep interest in the topic of CRISPR-based gene editing, almost in the same way that so many people developed a passion for computers during the digital revolution in the 20th century.

Really useful genome editing tool, but this has been around for a little while but it’s gaining lots of attention because of its efficiency and ease of use. Biotechnology as a whole is rapidly developing and the pandemic just fast tracked the market since it provided solutions chemical engineering couldn’t provide. Genome editing has been around for a lot of time, especially in the agricultural world.
The ethical debate is really concerning tho, because a lot of concepts are entangled. Can you, for example, edit an embryo for the sake of it’s health?

Doudna appears to define open conversation as exchanges with her fellow scientists, those with a built in profit based bias for the "more is better" relationship with knowledge which is the unquestioned holy dogma of their enterprise. I am burning from the inside and went from perfect radiant health to eating only healthy, exercising daily or running to lost over 20lbs and all my muscle and 2 inches shorter. The US, we, are so fortunate to have such brilliant, dedicated, caring, & ethical scientists who know the world of research backward & forward. Kudos 👏 to them. There is one aspect of this conversation that I find naive; the idea that we will EVER come to a consensus on using CRISPR in humans.
We can clone humans easily. There is nothing stopping private labs, public labs, or governments from doing so scientifically or financially. But we don't. Why? Because we've (as societies) have decided to not do it. Does that mean that no one has cloned someone secretly? No. But it does mean that it isn't done openly or in any meaningful numbers.

The day of Christ is His second coming after the tribulation, not the rapture. The translated word for falling away is a departure. It isn't "her" work. It is something that she realized was possible. Anyone who uses this procedure don't need to ask her permission, talk to her on how to do it, or anything else. When and where it should or should not be used has nothing to do with her. All she can, and is doing, is use her voice to give her opinion. As a molecular biologist myself, i can perform this kind of gene editing whenever i want.

I have a friend whose daughter was born with extra chromosomes resulting in like her body is trying to make a 24th chromosome. She has problems with her muscle development and several other problems and it's so rare that it's like one in 30 million births come out with this defect. For this little girl who is beautiful and inspiring crisper technology could be her only chance at a cure rather than suffer a painful short life I don't believe that people that say oh this is playing God and it's going to be all bad they don't consider this stuff they probably have at what great lives and they have no idea what it's like to depend on something like a miracle cure

am studying to be a genetic engineer, and i truly believe that we should have heavy heavy restrictions on gene editing. it's too good to pass up, but there can be so much done that is wrong. i'd love to fix many issues using gene editing but only if it doesn't destroy ecosystem or changes humans for cosmetic purposes.
