Welcome Back! When the merchant tells you to wrap up any errands, it means you won't be able to go back to do things. So talking to the merchant is necessary your first playthrough.

By the way, you were supposed to shoot the barrels while Mendez was holding them. After the fight, his fake eye can be collected and sold to the merchant. I would also recommend keeping only the better shotgun, as they both use the same ammo (if you sell upgraded guns, the merchant will give you all the money back).
Looking forward to the castle as I'm pretty sure you will enjoy it greatly 😉

You missed looting his home. There is a bunch of stuff you find out there.
