    I have to say your wood work is pretty good but your audio editing and mixing was even better. So many power tool using youtubers could learn a lot here.

    Seriously Dude, I don't know what I'm more impressed with - your speakers or the level of skill you use in making your videos. I only just discovered your channel Kirby, but I'm already subscribed and thorougly inspired. Keep up the great work.

    I learned some good tricks from this vid, such as the tape, etc. I don't have all those tools, but I think I will invest in a small table saw at least which should cover much of my recs. Q, no port on those? I'd think a port needed to eek out what little base those drivers can produce.

    I am following this channel because I am really into building speakers and you are obviously a good woodworker. However you should really make your speakers with MDF or plywood. Solid wood does look better but 99% of speaker manufacturers avoid this because it resonates too much. Usually people do MDF and then overlay veneer but I am sure you can do a 'double wall' construction where you have an inner layer made from plywood and an outer layer with solid wood. I just do 100% plywood because I like the look. You can also try bamboo plywood(plyboo). I plan on experimenting with PVC for speakers myself.
    I can't wait to see you tackle bigger projects with more complicated techniques, like bracing.

    • @talebuttbitchton1267
      @talebuttbitchton1267 6 лет назад +4

      MDF is all about performance. coming from an audio engineer trust me there is a reason MDF is used on thousand dollar plus speakers. its simple physics not some money game. the truth is kirby knows wood working not audio or physics. he makes pretty boxes but sub par speakers

    • @SlowCarToChina

      Some big name speaker makers actually *rely* on resonating cabinets; Harbeth, for example. Their cabinet walls are super thin. Really counter-intuitive.

    Excellent video. My only issue is with some of your wood finishing techniques. First off, if you're going to use a pigmented stain, you wipe it on.... keep the surface wet for a minute or two, and then wipe it off. Leaving so much on the surface gives it a muddy look. If you are unable to achieve a dark enough tone to the wood, you should look into wood dye. I use a product made by Mohawk called Ultra Penetrating Stain. Though it's not a stain, but an alcohol based dye. Stains are essentially a thin paint, while dyes have pigments so fine that they color the wood and really bring out the grain. With dye, if the first coat isn't dark enough, you can keep applying it till you get the desired effect. Using dye on softer woods though, you'll need to first apply a wash coat of dewaxed shellac to prevent blotching.

    I noticed that at every glue-up you use your fingers to spread the glue. A really usefull tool I've found is the Rockler Silicone glue brushes. They make glue-ups super easy and clean. Plus they're only $5 and last forever.

      No problem! I use them every day at the woodshop I work at. The glue doesn't stick to the rubber tip if you forget to wash it out. Also, the paddle end is great for cleaning inside edges and tight corners. Keep up the great work man! I've been looking at designs for speakers once I saw your videos. Nice build quality and amazing editing.

    Hi! Really nicely made, both the woodwork and the production of the video. But both having a router and the skills for it (obviously), why don't you flush mount the drivers? It seems like a small step to raise the quality several notches with little effort.

    If I don't have these power tools (like the circular saw), is it still possible to make these without having flaws? I have some minimal power tools like a drill and sander, and I have done a little woodworking before, but I feel like it would be very hard to make cuts at an exact 45 degree angle without a shop full of tools.

    • @KirbyMeetsAudio
      @KirbyMeetsAudio  8 лет назад

      I think your best bet to read a bunch of reviews on drivers in your price range and look for people talking about "detail". It would be too difficult to give you a straight up recommendation without having more details on your situation, but I think detail is important, as well as having a flat frequency response across the spectrum. "Color" when it comes to studio monitors is a big nono. Thanks for watching, Alex!

    The encloser of the box seems important I,e volume. What about construction materials is real wood better, is thicker better? Would mortice tenon joints be better i,e if you brought real cabinet making ,joinery skills to this would it be better, Oh and I think these videos look so stylish you have them just running on a flat panel on the wall like a moving image or a Tablet on the coffee table as a coffee table moving book

    Love the video and the channel! I wanted to make my first cheap speaker and was wondering if it would be OK-ish to use plyboard for my bluetooth speaker build? Since its a first time and I'm a student I don't want to spring for an expensive wood, especially if I mess it up. Plus I'm using old speaker components. Was hoping to use plywood and stain it black like in this video. Was just wanting to know if this is OK or if I'm wasting my time? Would appreciate any help!

    • @KirbyMeetsAudio
      @KirbyMeetsAudio  8 лет назад

      Hey Ian! Plywood is a great option for your first speaker build. The only thing I suggest is to not go too thin on the wood. .5" to .75" will work well. Kirby I know this is an old video, but perhaps youll respond, how have these stood up to the test of time, a lot of the arguments against using "real" wood (non composite materials) site the seasonal movement of wood to negatively affect their longevity. I would be curious as to how your experience measures up. Also on that note your experience with the tonality of different species of woods, It appears to be pine you are using for the box and then different species for the face and back?

    Hej Kirby, it looks like you used the same drivers as in Cube speakers. Have you compared them side by side? Is there any difference in the sound?

    Where do you suggest to learn about speakers and such? I'm buying a new house and would like to set up a quality sound system. I can handle the wood work.

      Oh man, theres a million sites to list and it's a long road! But I would start by joining our Slack community! diyspeakerbuilding.signup.team You can get a lot of your questions answered there. This is a great place to start your research: www.audioholics.com/diy-audio/building-a-do-it-yourself-loudspeaker-design Thanks for watching!

    Why did you put the drivers on the lower end? Aren't they supposed to be as close to ear level as possible?

      These can be flipped to orient them however you like (as you can see in the thumbnail). I just like the look of them with the drivers on the bottom.

    Awesome Video!
    Question tho: How did you clean the glue inside the box? Outside is sanding though, right?

    • @KirbyMeetsAudio
      @KirbyMeetsAudio  8 лет назад +1

      Thank you! The glue drips on the inside are scrapped with a thin piece of wood then wiped with a wet rag before the glue dries. The outside is sanded, yes.

    hy. I really love your videos. and I have a question. Is there any way that the groove made on 2:08 can be made without a router. Please dp reply.

      Yes, use a sharp chisel and a fine saw. Like the ones you use for dovetails. You can also use a chisel and a handsaw and clean up the cuts afterwards.

    Hmm, nice video work. How do you like that wixie angle gauge? I have had good luck with their planer gauge, but its a annoying to get perfect angles on this 50 year old delta rockwell I use. I like that you soldered the leads. Using spade connectors isn't all that great, so I have started doing the same on the last few sets. Looks like you use the same binding posts I use as well. I get that these are passive, but I would recommend using threaded inserts for the speaker mounts.

      The Wixie works well! I also have an old table saw, pretty much a must have. Love those posts! They look super clean without the plate. Thanks for watching!

      Sounds like something I need. The guts on this last enclosure called for a few acute angles where I had to pass the wood vertically with a jig. Having a more precise angle reading would be useful.
