Absolutely, the price of entry to overnight hiking can be insane.
In some ways, I'm almost glad that my severe spinal disability obliges me to be a car camper only; I have window-shopped hiking/backpacking gear (because hey, a girl can dream), & the price gap for mid-range gear is pretty dramatic, because the less technical requirements mean that it's just less expensive to produce , say, a Coleman than a Teton.
      I'd hate to be a cash-strapped would-be hiker.
(Sorry for all the de-posts, I kept spotting errors & my interface doesn't allow edits.)

I owned the Vik 1 , it just died in Iceland . Hey Guys im hiking Scandinavia each Summer . The Vik 1 lasted 4 years in heavy wind Trips in Norway , Sweden and this year Iceland . The Vik 1 is a good Budget Versatile and free standing sub 2 pounds tent that Served me Well. Condensation is an Issue as with every Single Wall tent but it didnt bother me . For 160usd i dont even care if it gets stolen . It survived many hikes in the North . But 2 weeks ago in iceland the Pole break . Luckily on the Day before finishing all my big hikes in iceland , did one night Cowboy camping . Just bought an tarptent double Rainbow li yesterday so a huge Upgrade. Still a NH vik i can buy for 120euro here and its ok for the 1-2 years weekend backpacking i think

Any single skin tent will have severe condensation in a humid and wet climate, calling it trash because it did the obvious seems a bit odd. It's like buying a winter jacket when you live in Florida and saying it's too hot and makes you sweat. Well yea...no s**t.

    • @Jacktemps

Been using the Vik 1 for a year. In the dry winter desert it really shines. Light, simple and not too expensive. It does what it's designed for. Every design is a compromise. No tent does it all. This tent is no worse than any other single wall non breathable tent, tarptent, or even a low pitch tarp. Condensation is what you pay for other advantages.

Used the Vik1 for 7 days consecutively. On the nights where I camped on a ridge or knoll, and had some wind, I had no issues with condensation. Even with driving rain. If I camped by the water, where the morning dew would gather, I had big issues. So for me, it works as long as there is a draft. I wouldn't say it's any worse than other budget dome tents I've used.

I have tested the 9x times more expensive (1.099 €) tent 2P, winter and wind proof, designed for alpine climbers - weight only 1.2 Kg with carbon poles. I set a camp nearby the river and after a couple of hours I was literally floating in a pool inside the tend due the condensation.

Condensation reporting; I have slept in only a 100% mesh inner tent and woke up with dew/condensation dripping from the mesh all over me. Obviously I would not say dont buy this mesh because it is not well ventilated, it is 100% ventilated. It would give viewers a more scientific and objective analysis if you included inside humidity compared to outside humidity measurements before dismissing or recommending a tent. Include other data like, if there is morning dew all over the grass everywhere, then it is going to be all over the tent everywhere, and yes including the inside. Is it breezy, is it still etc..

I have the Vik 1 w/ the snow skirts.
I only have about 10 nights in it as I predominantly use a hammock and only sleep on the ground when I absolutely HAVE to. ;-)
Been through a couple of fairly rainy nights in it and, honestly, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive.
I have found that as long as it’s guyed out properly and the vents are opened up, it breathes about as well as any other single-wall tent I’ve ever used...which is to say, nowhere near as good as a double wall, but still manageable...
The stitching on mine is top-notch, no frays or runs like you showed on yours.
I’ll wholeheartedly agree with you about rigidity under snow load though. Wouldn’t even want to try that.
I live in the Pac NW, where it does rain quite a bit, (most years anyway), but the relative humidity is usually pretty low, so maybe that’s a factor.
Overall, I’ve been pretty dang pleased with it.
I have been thinking about ordering one of the Lanshan 2 Pro models though to replace it. Mostly for weight considerations vs. living space increase. The Vik 1 is pretty small.
Good review as always, YMMV reigns supreme.

Tested this naturehike tent now 3x in different circumstances (plains, mountains, forest, hot temperatures, chilly and rainy, breezy, warm but morning dew...) ... And yes, it definitely has a condensation problem. It's is quick to build up, it's lightweight, and it's also well ventilated. But it's definitely completely wet on the inner sides so that your hair and your clothes and sleeping bag really get wet once you touch the walls, especially at night.

I have VIK 1 and when the weather is nice the tent is bone dry. Only if I camp close to the water or when its raining I get condensation, but it is still manageable. My only problem with this VIK 1 is that I can feel the drafts, wind blows through the tent, so it is definitely not a winter tent.

My Vik 1 lasted 4 years mainly used in Norway and Sweden and it died 2 weeks ago in Norway . I think the Archpole broke because I fell one day on trail and damaged the poles still what i can say is the Vik 1 as a sub 2 pound freestanding Tent , I was always dry in it from rain , had normal condensation and I agree to Grizzly u can feel wind blowing through the tent so if u camp above treeline like I do often on the mountain Fjörds u will have cold winds in the Tent .
Telling u a secret about Scandinavia and humid weather :
      WOOL .
Forget all us synthetics and fancy down jackets .
      Tried them all .
Nothing insulates better than Wool while it’s breathable and anti odor .

Absolutely love the review. I've bought one before this vid came out and loved it so much during warm (w/o a sleeping bag) - cold (fairly dry) weather camping, that I bought one for a friend's birthday, mainly due to weight, decent quality & price. Unfortunately this 2nd one is very disappointing, after setting it up in the park. IDK if anyone's had the same issue I have, but the bottom of the tent body's comically small, length wise. The 72" long klymit static v sleeping pad don't fit in the tent, it bundles up about 2" on one side when inflated & in the tent. The footprint that comes with the tent folds up onto itself when fully constructed. I'm sure it's a manufacturing defect, but being around $150, this shocked me as none of any tents I've had/have has a size issue where it's 10" shorter than spec. Thank god amazon got a free returns service & I had a backup gift for my friend.

I have this tent. The first time was fine. It was warm (10ºC and dry) No issues. However, the second time the condensation was really bad. There was high humidity and the wind stopped just before sunset. There seems to be something about the material which attracts humidity. My friend's 25€ tent was much drier, both inside and out. The material was soaking wet on both sides, but I did not get wet since it seemed to direct the humidity towards the vents and the corners and it did not rain. There was no strong wind to shake it off and rain inside the tent, but there was no wind to dry it out either.

Oh man, I own the vik1 and have done for a while, first thing il say is that EVERY tent will condense its called physics, when a cold temp meets a warmer temp with a barrier in between it WILL condense on that barrier regardless of what fancy materials are used, with single skin tents you can see it but double walled tents hide it from view but guess what.... its still there. I live close to the peak district in England where iv lived wild on the summits more times than I can count, the weather here is very unkind and iv lived out there for days on end in minus temperatures around minus 7 in the snow or pouring rain, this tent is absolutely fine, if you can't hack this tent you are not cut out for wild camping, living wild is not a luxury endeavour its for the resilient people not the nesh cowards that want to feel like they're at home in bed, you need to toughen up buddy and gain some resilience to your environment,

  • @PeterKooimanNL
    @PeterKooimanNL Месяц назад

I have cycled through the mountains of France for two months, and I camped everyday in this tent. I think the tent is good, but there are some attention points.
The delivered footprint is a bit bigger than the tent. It is best not not hook them to the pole, but to put it underneath the tent.
When the outer door is open, and the inner door is closed there are three identical zip pullers close to each other: two of the outer door, and one of the inner door. It is handier to have these three in different colours.
The two sides are each equipped with a vent hole, and a flap to lead the condensation outside the tent. It is a pity that only the two small side panels of the tent water their condensed water to that vent. The four large main panels lead their water to the four corners of the tent, which can therefore became quite wet by all condensed water.
The tent acted like a real fly catcher: the flies get in the tent, and then try to leave the tent by going to the light. Because the tent is white, they do not go to the door, but go to the brightest spot on the white tent fabric. I had to lure them out with a flashlight when it became dark. The fact that the inner tent door falls complete open when zipped open doesn't help to keep flies out.

This review is complete BS based on my own experience with the exact model. This is a very good tent. The stitching and quality on my tent is absolutely fine. It is a single wall tent. They all have condensation to some extent. I have not noticed condensation any worse than any other single wall tent.

I think that in a single wall tent you shouldn't limit the airflow.

  • @DerAlbi
    @DerAlbi 3 года назад +9

I find it interesting, that this tent with those air-flow slots does have those condensation issues. There are other tents that look much worse. You mentioned material choice - that is certainly a factor for the inner tent, but outer tents are in general not breathable, right?
What i can see here is that the tent is white. This lets through a lot of light instead of heating the outer tent. As a result the outer wall keeps cool while the interior heats up and water starts evaporating in the vestibules and stuff. It searches for the coldest spot to condensate which is the white outer wall of course.
Could you share your experience how to spot a tent with condensation issues before buying? Large openings and vents seem to be no reliable indicator.
Do you think you could even test my rain-fly-color theory ;-)

@@grizzlycountry5539 I think my point still holds. Everything but a dark, light-absorbing, heat-generating color should have the same issues. One might even go so far to say that the color issnt even that important, but how transparent it is in the far infra-red. (to be scientifically correct)
It would be interesting to compare silnylon to silpoly and so on.
A nice test would be to take a infrared camera and just try to spot the outline of a heat source through the fly material in a controlled setting. Then compare condensation behavior between more and less transparent materials.

Stitching and finishing are horrible. It only takes a few moments to snip the excess threads. If you already have the tent, place a tarp over the tent so you can keep the doors open. Put some netting to control the mosquitoes, etc. Good review.

    I own 1-person version.
This tent has indeed limited ventilation (even worse in 1-person version) and it's too small. I wish 1-person version has back and front vents
Condensation issue can be greatly reduced by picking the right campground: under the trees, far from water sources.
It's extremely easy to setup. Plus for it's price the tent has great weight and packability, especially if you pack poles separately.
I use it for hiking and bikepacking when I don't expect heavy storms (not the best weather to go anywhere anyway) and big temperature drops between day and night. In this case the tent gives more then enough privacy, bug protection, wind protection and rain protection, if any unexpected rain will occur.
Recommend having a little towel to quickly remove condensation in the morning and to dry the fly fast.
If I expect a lot of rain - I just grab my double-wall tent instead.
Greeting from Ukraine and thank you for your review

@@grizzlycountry5539 I was just saying that Lanshan 1 Pro has the same minimum base width. Is Vik 1 wide - yes. Has it other dimensions issues - also yes. At least I have them.
About height and length: I'm 170 cm long and it's barely enough for me with a down sleeping bag not too touch fly with my footbox. And the height of the tent is a problem when you try to get in/out. The friend of mine, who is 10 cm taller then me, can't comfortably use this tent - it's too small.
And also another problem, which I forgot to mention - the tent has too low bathtub floor height. So when you get in - you can easily get some sticks, needles etc inside. Not an issue with Sea to Summit Alto, for examle.
It's still a nice tent, but I would really love to see one-person version in a bigger size and with better vents

@@maksymperehinka4170 I'm 179cm and I can fit inside with my 0 degree Celsius down quilt. I would not recommend this tent to anyone taller then 180cm. 175cm would be perfect for this tent. Entering is difficult like in any other tent. You must be careful not to poke your eye on aluminum pole that goes across the tent. But opening and closing the doors from inside is much easier then in Lanshan. I'm not regretting by buying this tent in any way. I paid for it 106 eur and I think you can't buy lightest freestanding tent for that money. Only real advantage of Lanshan is that it uses trekking poles which you can find anywhere, but I don't think you can buy VIK 1 poles separately.

Keep it light and simple for your first camp and don't trust Amazon reviews. I'd go through Luke's backlog of videos for a tent but remember, no tent is perfect, so pick tradeoffs that aren't as relevant to your situation/location. Camp in your backyard or close to home and see what you really need when you do go away. Hope that helps 🙂

A truly ultralight 2 person tent under $200 is a hard thing to find. Finding one that doesn't have condensation issues, even harder. You could check out the 3F UL Lanshan 2 or something like the Naturehike Cloud Up 2. When it comes to the Lanshans they have two versions - standard and pro. The standard is a double wall and you can choose either a mesh or solid inner. The pro is a single wall available with either mesh or solid side panels. It's lighter than the standard version, but has the same condensation issues as the Vik and you MUST seam seal it yourself because they don't do it unless you buy it from their site and pay them to seal it.

I knew you would come to this conclusion. This design and hyke & byke zion 2 are almost identical. I have it out at 30 degrees and woke up to snow falling inside the tent due to ZERO ventilation. The very top of these tents trap all of it and the ports are way too small. They know this and they told me they were aware of it. They stated it happens to all tents. I said I'm returning it and after that comment, not buying anymore of your products.
