His wife, June Carter Cash, the woman on the stairs, passed away not long after this was released. He passed away not long after her. Trent Reznor, the author, said that hearing this version felt like he had lost his girlfriend. He commented that it was now Johnny's song and that he had only carried it a while for him. Two of my favorite Johnny songs are The Man In Black (live version from right after he wrote it) and The Man Comes Around. Watch the movie, Walk The Line, with Juaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon to see their story.

Johnny Cash's manager thought he could do a good job of Nine Inch Nails song. At first Cash didn't think he could be something he wanted to do but after playing it many times they contacted Trent who wrote the song. He okay'd it. He had second thoughts until he saw the video that Cash did for this and said, "This is Johnny's song now." When his and June's daughter came and watched it, she said, "It sounds like you are saying goodbye." He replied, "I am." June died just a few months after this and Johnny just a short 3-4 months later. It was the last time he played the piano at the end. There was so much of his life that was shown in various stages of it. June was the love of his life and Johnny for her. He wrote the Ring of Fire for her. Check that one out. It's about the passion that lasted his whole life.

Oh, you really need to be prepared before you watch that one. It is extremely emotional and especially for those of us who have gone through what the song is about. Buckle Up before even thinking about that one.
