Contrary to many other demons, Hantengu's backstory isn't meant to be sad. He was running away from his responsibilities his whole life, so much so that he created this entire complex system of emotions to protect him from confrontation and repercussions. Tanjiro had to be the one to make him pay the consequences of his actions and punish him for his sins.

coming form a manga reader, they did SO MUCH justice to the emotional weight of this episode. I feel like in the manga, there wasn't much attention given to how serious of a decision "sacrificing" Nezuko was. This episode fit much more with his character. Heavy breathing, distressed and torn between what decision he should make. You could really see and hear the pain in his voice and eyes how much he was panicking from the thought of needing to sacrifice his sister. Love how they did this. I expected them to extend the fight scenes with the 54 or so minutes they had but i'm glad they opted for extending the emotion instead.
As a manga reader myself too I couldn't agree more.
I don't read the manga and I literally thought she's really dying 😀 😢. But then I thought about Zenitsu. There's no way they did that to my boy. 🤣
The anime is simply infinitely better than the manga. I'm really curious to know if Gotouge (Is that how you spell her name?) Has a big hand in the production of the anime and is trying to correct things from the manga.
The sibling relationship between Nezuko and Tanjiro is wonderful. Tanjiro hesitated to make a choice, Nezuko didn't. So she made the choice for him. She was the MVP of this episode and it was an amazing finale✨💯

This is why I love Hantengu. He's a great character, because his problems actually do reflect a lot of people in real life, just taken to an extreme.
He is a parasite. You see it in his backstory, which is short because it's not supposed to be tragic. You're meant to understand him, but not feel sorry for him. In fact, in the manga, the entire backstory was a single, double-page panel spread, which looked awesome. He murdered his family when they accused him of wrongdoing, stole things and pushed the blame onto other people, pretended to be weak and blind and helpless to garner sympathy. Hantengu is one of those people that contributes nothing and takes everything.
Yet, he has lied to himself so much that he convinces himself he's the victim. He takes no agency or responsibility for his wrongdoings, refusing to take blame for anything. He's become so twisted in this mentality that even when he's Upper Moon 4, in a position where nobody believes he's weak anymore, he still keeps the façade up. In fact, this mentality manifested in his Demon Blood Art; he literally creates new demons to fight while he runs away, so he doesn't have to be responsible for his actions.
I really like Hantengu from a story perspective because it shows that sometimes, even if life screws you over, it's not always acceptable to just instantly say "okay, I'm defeated, I give up, I'm too fragile and weak to help myself". Demon Slayer has tons of tragic backstorys, plenty of characters who were good people that became corrupted because of unfortunate circumstances.
But sometimes, the problem really is just YOU.

25:45 Heian period was between 794AD-1185AD. Sengoku period is 1467AD-1615AD. Yes, Muzan was both before Yoriichi and a thousand years before the Taisho period.
Unironically, I think the doctor was trying to cure him of his illness and accidently made an immortality concoction. Except Muzan, like many an impatient noble, killed him out of frustration and got an incomplete treatment. Resulting in the sunlight weakness. Yeah, Muzan played himself so hard he's projected his failure on every demon ever.
I still think that the blood of the doctor getting into the medicine is a big part of why he became a demon who craves more blood
That's the funniest part too. If he'd let the doctor keep going I'm pretty sure not only would it have cured his illness but he would have been immune to sunlight too. Man played himself so hard that half of every day rejects him 😂

Tamayo was saying that Nezuko, unlike other demons has an undeveloped childlike personality. Her blood is constantly mutating, so Tamayo was theorizing that instead of focusing on regaining herself, Nezuko is spending her time and energy on a way to conquer the sun. She believes her blood will eventually mutate to allow her to do this, which is what happened this episode.
This also explains why Nezuko has been acting like this the entire series so far and why she fought against eating humans.
as a manga reader i gotta say: the music and the animations are what made this adaptation so amazing. They put a lot of emotions in this episode. This is more than i was expecting. Thank you ufotable for giving us a wonderful show. See you in next season!

this ep made me cry even though i knew she wasnt going to die but the music and voice acting pushed me.
Also my expectations for this ep were kinda low because of last few episode but this one did not disappoint and blew me away

THE ANIMATION WAS SO AMAZING INWAS IN TEARS😭, also each of the Hashira marks were originally supposed to match their color scheme like mitsuris was supposed to be green and muichiro was supposed to be teal blue! :)

That was actually all fan coloring of the manga. The creator said themselves that the mark is red and it has been red in all official colorings.

its red cause its produced through high temperatures, before the marks appear, the hashiras body enter through intense fever. Making their bodies hot. And also its always flames that appear before the mark so it makes sense to be red
That was only fan colorings, the official color of all the marks, as stated by the mangaka is red. which will make alot of sense when the slayer marks are explained next season.

This was not mentioned in the manga. Just to clear things up about Nezuko conquering the sun and the blue spider lily:
It doesn't have anything to do with their bloodline, it's actually because when Nezuko consumed the blue spider lily when she was a child, which is why she is immune to sunlight.
The reason why Muzan could never find the blue spider lily is because it only blooms once a year in a specific location in the day. Tanjiro's mom was one of them who knew the location of the blue spider lily.
Muzan is so stupid. He keeps killing the people who knows about the lily. I guess that's what arrogance and bloodlust does to a man, but dang he's stupid.

I'll give a supplementary explanation about the miserable.
The Heian period, 1,000 years ago, is said to be the era when Japan was most full of mystical powers, and it is said that the existence of monsters such as demons and onmyoji who use magic were commonplace.
So, I think it's not surprising that the power of medicine alone can turn into a demon.
From here, I'll add my thoughts, but perhaps that doctor used a mysterious medicine (a special medicine using blue spider lily) to temporarily turn Muzan into a demon to save him from the risk of disease and death, and then cure him into a human. I also think that I was trying to make it.
It is a name that beautifully expresses Muzan-sama, who is so impulsive that Kimetsu no Yaiba fans call him "Head Muzan-sama" and acts without thinking about what will happen next.
I'm a Japanese fan and this is it. However, one of the charms of Mr. Muzan is his stupid behavior without thinking about the consequences.
As a side note for non-Japanese people, the word "無惨Muzan" mainly means something like "a miserable, terrible state of affairs."
Thus, his fan-made nickname "Head Muzan" indicates that his thinking is extremely stupid and shallow.

Yeah tbh as a medicine, the blue spider lily is a miracle itself. In the future such a medicine can be a cure all for disease, the fountain of youth if modified correctly. Or give and then cure. I think this might be a bit of a stretch but the blue spider lily may not even be that bad, maybe it brings out people trueself. The fact Muzan was already a bad, stupid, evil guy was only enhanced by this plant, and anyone who gets effected by him essentially takes on his evil/bloodlust, as soon as people are transformed they crave blood immensely like they've been starved forever. I mean imagine if Nezuko got the blue spider lily directly. She could be the complete opposite to Muzan, an angelic demon, and anyone she effects would be the same.
I mean rn it basically like that. I have my own theory why Nezuko blood why it has changed and mutated, that the Muzan cells aka his blood was converted into Nezuko cells, and reproduced. Since Nezuko didn't drink blood when she became a demon and went into a sleep cycle for 2 years I think, all that time Muzan cells were weakened dramatically and she converted them, and started creating her own. That my theory anyway that how in the entertainment district she was able to reach upper rank regeneration so quick, that she doesn't need Muzan blood to get stronger or human blood to empower Muzan cells since they're her own now. So bloodlust pure demon (Muzan) vs kindhearted pure demon (Nezuko) resulting in different capabilities. Nezuko producing her own type of demonic cells, instead of using Muzans. If that make sense, that my theory anyway. That would explain why Muzan doesn't have power/control over her either.
Also Muzan such an bad villain, an idiot tbh, a walking L. 1,000 years alive and he hasn't achieved anything with the superpowers he has.
ALSO I read tanjiro's mother found blue spider lily and didn't actually know what was it, she thought it was medicine herbs and brew it with tea and fed her family
So that's hw nezuko and tanjiro well if his family turned demon who conquered sun

I didn't think this was going to drop today, but it was a welcome and very much appreciated surprise after a long day.
Since you asked about the Heian period (pronounced Hay-in) it was from 794-1185. The Sengoku period when Yoriichi lived was from 1467-1615. So about a 300 year gap. The current time during demon slayer is set in the Taishō period which was from 1912-1926. So it's been over a 1000 years since muzan became a demon and has been looking for the blue spider lily
This the last adventure for this season, gonna miss this epic reaction plus the hype of every action and surprices !.. Gonna wait to see you again, on the next journey of Demon Slayer!..

Heian Period: around 9th to 12th century (Pronounced like "Hey, Ann!")
Sengoku Period: late 15th - 16th century (Yoriichi lived)
Edo Period: 17th to mid -19th century (Daki and Gyutaro became demons)
Taisho Period: 1912-1926 (the setting of this work)
Muzan said "it was a thousand years ago" from 1900 A.D.(Taisho Period), so the backstory would be around 900 A.D.

rather than the Kamado bloodline, I speculate that Nezuko's cell mutation has more to do with the fact that she also essentially practices hinokami kagura. like it's how her demon art works. her fire is meant to hurt demons and heal people so maybe she developed a natural immunity to the sun in a sense bc her own fire wouldn't hurt her. also, I've been waiting for your reaction bro! Yours has always been my immediate go to when it comes to Demon Slayer. I can't wait for the next season!!

Why did they have to do us like that with Nezuko. So heart breaking. Im a little disappointed with Hantengu's backstory. I feel like with all the splitting, he would have a more sad and traumatic story.
He does, he’s an Undiagnosed schizophrenic that people in that age and time didn’t even know existed, which is why he was always scared and never realized what he did, until after his anger took over and he went sicko mode.. but he wouldn’t do anything until someone said something bad to him which seems like it’s one of his “ticks” setting him off

Hantengu suffered from multiple personality disorder which is like green goblin from spider man. He doesn't know his other self was doing that crimes.
Not every demon needs a sad backstory for us to feel bad about them or for them to be a good character. Sometimes people are just scumbags. I like that Hantengu doesn't have a stereotypical tragic backstory. It wouldn't match his character at all, and if I'm being honest here sad backstories are kinda overused in DS.
Edit: Season 3 was pretty good. While the fights weren't as intense as Gyutaro vs Tengen was, they were still amazing. And I liked how the breathings were animated (specially Love Breathing).
The Heian period is about 700 years before the Sengoku period and about 1200 years ago from now.

Amazing episode! Can't wait for the final showdown. We're really down to three upper moons, but the difference in strength between the top 3 and bottom 3 is quite large. And Hantengu's story isn't supposed to be sad. He was a murderer and thief who lied and never took accountability for his action. Gyokko's story isn't sad either even though it wasn't animated. he was a murder too. That's something these two had in common.
