Thanks Haley, Kathleen, Amanda and Jenn for another enjoyable episode! Beautiful handmade gifts for Katherine's baby shower! All so special! Back in the day , our 1st day of school tradition was to go to our great aunts house with all our "new" school books for her to see (she was a retired school teacher). We would then make brown paper book covers for the books and then all eat dinner together. Happy memories! Happy Knitting!
So great to see you - Jen, thanks for joining in on your vaca! Beginning of the year traditions - first day of school pics, new crayons, pencils and notebooks.
Beginning of the school year was always fun. As kids, we would cover all of our textbooks with brown paper bags and decorate them. When my kids were little, my friends and i celebrated the first day of school with a Mom's brunch and hot tub party - good times!
My son will be 44 next week and daughter will be 42 in October. Every year after first day of school I would take them to Buxton’s for what ever type of ice cream or sundae they wanted. Once Buxton closed we started going to Friendly’s Over the years they would bring up “our” little tradition after first day of new school year.
Our first day of school is always in the middle of the week. Our tradition is to take a photo in the front yard. This year my oldest daughter started college, so she took a selfie on campus!
For the first time in 21 years I am not getting kids off to school (from nursery school to college). I would take pictures on the first day of school as long as my son and daughter would let me. I used to love the 1st day of school. A quiet house is golden.
So glad you like the ribblesdale! It definitely is a crash course in techniques - my mum knit one as her first ever brioche project (deadlines were tight and I needed a sample knitted 😅) and she said it was a good one to start with! I think the size 2 looks amazing on you!
Thanks! I truly LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I've got a ton of deadline knits (Rhinebeck + new baby!) this fall, but I'm *dying* to cast on another one in LBA Winterfell 😎...maybe over the holidays! ~A🥰
First day of school - family picture. It's fun to see hie kids faces change every year, and their smiles dissappearing somewhere between 4th and 6th grades)))
First day of school was always a half day. After the usual first day pictures, we always took the kids out to lunch and for ice cream at our local frozen custard shop before they closed for the season.
I always treat the start of a school year as a fresh start, even more so than the actual new year. Being a college professor these days, I have always had the new school year to look forward too.
Hi Sarah - I really do too! I think part of it for me is that feeling of reinvigoration as the weather cools down. Which hasn't happened yet, this year, but I hope will soon.
I retired as a school administrator and when I used to work my beginning of the school year ritual was to do a major house clean and food prep because that made me feel prepared. Now it’s summer break all year!
Beginning of school year is also always within a few days (sometimes the actual day of) my daughter’s birthday, so for us it’s shopping for school supplies, presents, and cake!
We always got to go shopping and pick out a new first day of school outfit and even new shoes. Shopping for all the new school supplies. I still go and buy new pens and paper. Love your podcasts!
I work at our local public library and we love the beginning of the school year. Summer reading has been successfully completed and our fall after school programs are beginning. (And I'm ready to cast on a new cardigan! 😉)
The start of a new school year always meant new clothes and supplies when I was in school ( a LONG time ago lol) I followed the same type of tradition for my son who is grown and on his own. I miss the traditions of shopping and prepping for that first day, maybe one day I can be a part of Grands 🙂
Thank you for another wonderful episode!! Haley, enjoy your school year. Kathleen, I love the baby sweater that you made for Katherine's daughter. Amanda, your baby blanket is lovely. Im sure It will be a cherished heirloom. On the first day of school, I always baked homemade chocolate chip cookies for the kids. Karin Patience
Great episode. Growing up it was always a new outfit, paper, pencils and folders for back to school. Nowadays, dreading the back to school traffic commute. 🙂
We no longer have the beginning of the school year traditions because my sons are grown with families of their own. I do love hearing & seeing others post and talk about their new traditions. As always, it's a wonderful episode, ladies.
For the first day of school, we take a picture in the same stance every year. We missed it this year because our oldest is a freshman this year and didn’t want to get up on time
In Memphis, the schools start back in early August; even though it's 100 degrees outside. So, our first day tradition is Sno Cones after school. I'm a college professor, and our students start back tomorrow (8/28). My first day tradition is picking up my favorite iced latte from my local coffee shop.
Our school started for students on August 14th. Since I am an athletic trainer my "first day" is 2 weeks before that when the football and volleyball teams begin practice so my tradition for the past 27 years has been to be at practice the first practice at 5 am and then cover practices all day until 8 or 9 pm.
I grade school I would get a new outfit for the first day of school, then in HS we had summer and winter (and gym) uniforms and so each Fall I would get to wear the summer uniform for at least one month. More fun than it sounds!
First day of school i would pose the children on the lawn and take a photo. Fun to look back on those years, that passed way to quickly. My children are now having children of their own, making their own traditions. Amanda, the Ardith blanket looks lovely in the single color! Always a fun and engaging podcast.
Also, for Jen, I know it’s fingering weight, but I absolutely adore the Porty Pullover by Gudrun Johnston and it’s so well-written (very first sweater I ever knitted in Rauma Finull I purchased at Yarnia). I wonder if she has any colorwork sweaters in a heavier weight yarn. What I loved about this pattern especially as a new colorwork knitter is that she even indicates, row by row, which color to hold dominant.
Call me out, all of you, will you? LOL I think the main issue I had with the Shadow Box Socks were all the twisted stitches and k2togs. Those just went right to my wrist. Let it be known, I l LOVE to purl! But I don't like a three needle BO on my shoulders. I just can't! On a bright note: You all are adding things to my list, all the yarn and all the patterns
My current beginning of school year tradition is to leave for work earlier because there is a noticeable increase in traffic during the school year. I leave near several K-12 schools.
We had so many kids on our block when my kids were young that all the moms, and some dads, got together and walked the kids the two and a half blocks to school then we came home and had coffee and cake at someone’s house.
We do first da photos and ice cream after school. My kids are in college and I work at a high school, so we all still take them. And I still took myself for an ice cream!
I am out of the game for back to school. My daughter is 30 years old and a mommy so no back to school for me yay congratulations on the new bundle of joy enjoy.
I remember my first day of school was always new clothes. These were fall clothes and our school did not have air conditioning. I wore a wool skirt in a plaid. Loved it. However, I was hot, itchy and miserable. I could not pay attention, I did look good however. My parents did not own a camera. No pic.
Ladies, if you get a chance could you talk about how to get started with crochet? i want to find a pattern that i could learn on, but also one that keeps my interest and motivates me to keep going. the thought of trying a blanket makes me feel ill - is there something more gratifying that would teach me a lot?
Hi Jaqueline! Personally, I never recommend a blanket as a way to get started with a craft - with something that large, it's just so easy to get discouraged and eventually drop the craft entirely. One project that could be a good starting one is the Lily Sugar'n Cream Everyday Bag - it's a free pattern on Ravelry and you can learn some of the basics while making something useful. And since you're already a crafter, the fact that you can make is from scraps makes it super-easy to start at any time. Thanks for your question. I'm starting a list of topics that viewers have asked us to discuss -- I'd love to add this as a feature in future episodes! Best, KV 🧶
Haley, some clips of the Elaine lemon photos from your trip, please! 🍋🍋 🙂 Also, you referred to a road trip app that you had used on your trip to find fun things to do - which app was it?
I never had any traditions as a child and I also never did anything as a mom. Oddly ( I was married to a photographer) we never even did first/last day of school pictures. I feel like that started when my kids were a bit older. Wow, now feeling like a loser- hee hee
The Cold Sunlight by Melanie Berg looks nice. Plus, you can get 20% off through August 29th. One I'm wanting to make is the Sea Glass Sweater. I love the rainbow self striping sock yarn. 🧶🧦🌈 I usually take all four kids, one at a time, out to get all the things they need for school. Here in Tennessee most schools start the first full week of August. However, two of my four kids are in a year round school this year. It starts in late July. They go to school all year, but they get 3 week breaks every 9 weeks.
How do you like the year-round school? It sounds cool in concept but changing from a full two months off in the summer seems like it would be rough! ~K🧶

Great episode!! The smells in the air always give it away that the start of school is drawing near!! Makes me want to knit and crochet even more!!!

The beginning of the school year for the grandkids always involves a picture on the lawn. So look forward to getting it send to me.
First (and last) day of school for my kids and now my grandkids I bake them after school cookies!! 🍪❤ Another great podcast, Ladies, thanks! 😊🎉

I adore my Saturdays with you gals! All the best! Kimberly
My kids are grown now but we always celebrated with ice cream!! I miss those days!!!!

Yes, the traffic change is no fun at all!
Like mostly everyone else, we'd need to take a photo before school! Love the Panda!!

Yes - it's good to treat yourself!
Our starting school tradition was to have a special dinner after the first day usually at a restaurant or everyone’s favorites at home
My kids went back to school August 9th. Our tradition is a special dinner on the first day and that Friday we get ice cream.
Our tradition is a new first day of school outfit and new sneakers and of course the first day of school picture. Another great episode!

My kids are adults now but back in the day the first day of school dinner was always sushi. Yup, even as littles raw seafood was their favorite!
Love that! 🍣🥟🍱

The Guthrie would be great for a colourwork class👍

Same!
There is a great soup dumpling place in Fort Lee. Everyone loves it people come from all around to eat there. Very unassuming.

My babies are not old enough for school yet but all the comments are definitely giving me some good ideas for the future!
I am a teacher and before my first day of school, I always go out to eat hibachi with my nephew.
Fun!
