You have to react to many more Depeche Mode tracks. This is an song with their main singer - they have two of them. Martin Gore and David Gahan. Martin write many of songs and sing and David is the band "leader" who sing 90% of the songs.
This band is my favorite band! They have been making music since 1981 and are still making great music today! Their songs are about Real Life and it isn't always rosy.
Watch the Depeche Mode "Wrong" official video.... It is MESSED UP! Also, most of the time the Videos of DM have no real relation to the song. They are just artistic videos done by a film maker.
You did it! Thank you ❤️. The band is basically the 2 people in the room, plus the guy doing the singing. Martin Gore writes most of their songs but only sings a couple each album. This was one of them. Dave Gahan is the main singer, the dark haired guy on the end of the bed. He also writes a few songs. Andy Fletcher is the third member. They have more when they play live. I messed up the phonetics of the pronunciation lol. But yes. As someone else has said the end of the work rhymes with “mesh”. I love your interpretation of the video. Martin Gore rarely says what his songs are about. I thought this one was about his recovery from alcoholism but the video certainly speaks more to death. Or like an alien observing behaviour on earth and seeing people being unhappy or even dying.
@@macewbee I’m not so sure. Dave often talks about how he’s convinced Martin has written songs for him, and on this album he talks in particular about Barrel Of A Gun. Martin has never said that’s true, and it’s not as if he didn’t have his own issues to overcome at that time. Alcoholism for one. The only songs which I’ve read anything about their meaning are this one, and Precious. Martin just doesn’t talk about the meaning to his songs.
I always think this song is about being grateful for our lives; good times, bad times, ugly things, beautiful things and the bald headed guy is an angel witnessing
Very ambitious to start your DM journey with this song.... One of the most beautiful songs in existence. Many of Martin's songs are intentionally open to interpretation. For me it's about taking a risk in giving all of yourself to someone. Then again, it could be about drugs.
This song made me cry when I heard it live in Chicago. It is in my top 3 favorite DPM songs, which is saying a lot. I found this band when i REALLY needed them, through the Black Celebration album. Being raised religious I always felt like everything was supposed to be sunshine and light and hope, and if I didn't feel that way something was wrong with me. DPM was the first band I heard that said, "Sometimes life sucks and it sometimes hurts, but there's good things too." Finally I found that I belonged here. But Not Tonight is another song that reminds me of that.
This song is beautiful and my top 3 DM songs, right alongside "precious" and "never let me down again". I heard this song as a college student studying abroad, struggling with major clinical depression. I always interpreted the song as someone struggling with mental illness, the feeling of struggling when you are "home" and just feeling conflicted because you are with the people you love and everything is good yet you still are depressed. Martin was always a favorite of mine because of his angelic voice, and the beautiful, touching lyrics he can write.
Truly awesome reaction/review to a beautifully mysterious song by Depeche Mode. I agree, as a Depeche Mode fan, that the embodiment of death is likely portrayed by the bright-eyed, bald gentlemen who is "watching", "experiencing" - alas, comforting those people in their final moments of life; bringing them *Home* to the very place where most of us go, to belong: our eternal abode finally occupied by our spirit and spirits of loved ones we longed for every moment we were alive. Absolutely enthralled with your interpretation of this song/video, and honestly this video illustrated your intelligent, intellectual capabilities in comprehending lyrical content and metaphoric imagery. Keep up the amazing work my friend.
It's such a great song! My favorite part of the song is at the end when Martin stops singing. The instrumental portion with the strings. It's genius and beautiful. Great review. You're the first person I've seen review this amazing song. Well done.
Your vibe is correct.he,s basically watching everyone and there troubles and isn't being judgemental in any way.The song is a classic Depeche mode song.🎶
Life long DM fan. Since around 1984. I read through the comments and it looks like the gang filled you in well. I appreciate your search to go deeper into the sound and the words/meaning. That sort of stuff is what sucked us all into their incredible world.
You have to react to many more Depeche Mode tracks. This is an song with their main singer - they have two of them. Martin Gore and David Gahan. Martin write many of songs and sing and David is the band "leader" who sing 90% of the songs.
Great reaction, brother! Personally I think this song is very open to interpretation. It’s a very beautiful song, with some serious themes. I kinda take it that the bald guy in each scene is a “silent witness”. Sort of a nonjudgmental angel who witnesses everything we do, all our struggles and triumphs..,
Martin Gore (blond) is the main songwriter of Depeche Mode, he only sings a couple songs per album (usually ballads). Dave Gahan (dark hair) is the primary singer, you saw him sing Enjoy the Silence (live). The bald guy is not in the band, just an actor. Please watch another song from this era "Barrel of a Gun" (official video). Great song, sung by Dave... much harder.
Death? Home… IS where the heart is, whether it’s a mansion, apartment or hotel just like in this video. What makes a “house” a “home” is what you make it. A house is just a building where you live and a home is where you feel like you belong. Everyday life happens good and bad just like in this video from all walks. The observer (death, alien, angel) is experiencing different people’s home (motel), a place where they feel they belong with whomever they are with. Life happens and what you make of it is up to you.
One of the best things about DM is the ambiguity of their lyrics. If you take the time to listen you can find a world of meaning and when you revisit it years later you will find that is still the case. Music for the awkward angsty teen in all of us. ❤👍
New sub. Fun fact about DM: Each of their songs has its own unique sound bank. I.E. no two songs uses any of the same synth/keyboard/drum machine samples. They create a whole new set for every song. I think they broke this rule a couple times in their 40 years (for nostalgia purposes.)
They broke their rule since the 2000s because they believed they could no longer mantain that type of creativity extremism. I believe the fact it too them 7 years from Songs Of Faith And Devotion to Ultra, then before they used to publish a new album every 2 years, made them realise they were getting too precious and was stiffling their productivity. It is true they havent been able to make sn slbum as great as Ultra since but on the other hand they now have fun making new music without the pressure to out-do themselves.
Don't beat yourself up for struggling to understand the message of the song and video. With Depeche Mode, it is expected... 😉 This is my favorite band since I was a child, about 7 years old, trust me I still don't know the real messages behind their songs. The true messages of Depeche Mode songs are actually to each their own. The way Martin Gore (writer of most their songs, and singer on this particular song) writes his songs is so that everyone can sort of interpret them in their own way. He himself acknowledged that fact. You should check out more of their many songs. Although, just keep in mind, the actual singer of most their songs is Dave Gahan, the guy in this video with the black hair. btw... Thanks for this reaction.
Pronounced De-pesh mode. The guy I think is an angel and represents judgment and/or shame. Being comfortable where you are right now. The band always have something important to say.... The 'angel' is an actor
And btw... You said at the end that you haven't watched videos about death before. Depeche Mode's latest album is entirely about death. 😉 It is called "Memento Mori"
Yea Martin wrote it for Dave when he was trying to get of the drugs also they were trying to great a big album without Alen Wilder. Also the guy when is walking is supposed to be the God of death.
Just a thought, but what if there are all these different people live in their home with all those drama and joy, sadness, happiness throughout their life to their death and there is this odd, alien-like bald guy who is just watching all that with no feelings so he have no life and does not BELONG.
Don't read too much into DM music videos - they don't direct themselves. They hire directors that have their own visions... so they are often not directly connected to what the songwriter (Martin Gore) envisioned.

True but it's about David recovering from his drug habit I think it was heron is why Martin had wrote it.

You nailed it! The man in the video is the embodiment of death.
You should also listen to their song called Walking In My Shoes

Where this song goes musically, just takes me somewhere else. I've always said I just get lost in it. Sit back, close your eyes and get lost.

Martin has been quoted as saying the song is about Death.

Its pronounced with the sound "mesh"
Think De Mesh but its would be De Pesh
Correctly spelled De Peche

Please sir, react to The Smiths - Heaven Knows I Am Miserable now
Depeche Mode pronounced ‘da-pesh mode’. Depeche is French for ‘fast or quick’ and ‘mode’ is French for ‘fashion’; Fast Fashion… Depeche Mode.
I understand it’s gonna change every generation but can we not stop doubling down on
It's pronounced 'DaPesch'
