Class of '87, and this song still is true. 494 others, and me. Dreams realized and dashed, but the song portrays life. "Things get complicated, when you get past 18". So true.
I was just thinking that if this song was updated for today that the class of '87 would be about right. Some of the lyrics would need updating (I doubt that the 12 remaining Sears stores have many truckers) but what was true then is every bit as true today.
I love all the songs where Lew is singing. Everyone can relate to this song. Just change the year and it;s your story. They were total class and there will never be anyone like them again.
COULD NOT agree more about Lew. We had no idea what a treasure we had. First concert I ever saw. It was at Freedom Hall in Louisville. Line that resonates? Things get complicated when you get past 18.
What a great song by one of the greatest quartets of all time! This song rings so true for us of the class of 1957 (Valley HS, Albuquerque, NM). All we have to do is substitute the names of the folks in this song and memories or our 1957 classmates come to life. We did have our dreams...and now we are just a very small part of history. Thank you, Statlers for this song as well as the many other great ones you gave all of us!
Sorry for your loss. My dad died in 2019. I can relate. I'm here because I love the Statlers, but my dad was a big fan of Hank Williams Sr and I listen to some of his favorite Hank songs from time to time when I'm thinking about him.
If one had never seen the Statler Brothers in concert they don't know what they missed. They are total class like you said and one of the best country and popular performers we'll ever see.
Add in the Oak Ridge Boys too. I was fortunate enough to see both of these groups shows in northern Indiana just outside Chicago during the summer of 1990.
Saw them at the Colorado state fair, would probably have been in the early 2000's (I brought my not yet wife - the show was not her speed but I guess she married me anyway). They talked about this being their last tour - I remember it like yesterday. Don said they weren't sick or anything, then turned to Herold who shrugged like 'speak for yourself', and the audience laughed. Then said they'd been touring for 40-some years, and ready to quit. Definitely a class act, and I'm not even a country or even necessarily gospel fan.
Growing up I can remember when we would go from St. Louis to Branson, Missouri this would play on the 8 Track that my father and mother made of all of their favorite songs. I love the hard rock and pop but I really love these songs.
One of the best song the Statler Brothers ever did. I grew up in Staunton, Va. I lived 4 houses down from Don Reid. One of the most down to earth men you will ever meet. All of them were great to meet. I love you guys.
This song met alot to my aunt Carlene since the local high school had closed and moved in 1957. Her dream realized a few years later to see them in concert and Phil kissed her on the cheek!
I live in East Tennessee. A radio station in Morristown plays old (great country) . I think you can hear it on the net . 93.3 fm. Hope you can find it, if you can and get to listen to it ,you are welcome
Go to RUclips and look for statler's on Barbara Mandrel show. I think it's one of the funniest things Harold ever did! I miss all the great songs of the time.
I saw them in concert 3 times back in the 1980's at the Indiana State Fair. Lew DeWitt was retired by then. They were awesome. They got a curtain call and standing ovation at the end of each concert. I sure miss the country music of the 1970's and 1980's. Many great artists back then.
Oh I remember going to the Staunton city park and listen to them since I was a small child I am now 60 years old and I still love them as much now as I did then I really miss them and their music I wish we can have the music like they had today so the children of today to know what it's really like to love music and the people that sing it and that you can understand it my children grew up loving this of course now they've changed but that being said they show up every fourth of July and I am so very very happy that their children are now carrying on their legacy
A song that is so true to life. You will never be as close with another group as you were with your friends in high school, but after graduation that all fizzles practically overnight.
When everyone else was Rockin and Rollin, even at 12 years old, I loved these guys. Maybe the barbershop sound, but more the stories of life, simple and complicated, and the comfort found in nostalgia! At 68 still find Great Comfort in listening. I'll go to my Grave . . . , Rose, Class of 57, Do You Remember . . . You are My Sunshine . . . turns into a work of love and musical art.
I love this song and I'm only 10 years old. Actually I've been listening to music like this since I was 4 years old, but still I love old music it's my favorite
Not only one of the greatest Country Quartets, but also one of the greatest quartets of the music industry of all time. I played everyone of their hits on the radio, but never got to meet them in person. RIP Harold!
The sign of real talent is if a band can sound as good live as they do in the recording studio, and the Statlers pull this off perfectly in this video.
Played this song for my kids when they were in high school. I told them listen closely to the part, "things get complicated when you get past eighteen", years later they both understand this very well.
This song played at my gym on New Year's Day this year. The Statler Brothers were one of my dad's favorites & this song, in particular, mentions my mom's name. I stood in the gym, crying. I told my sister Mom & Dad visited me today. She said the same song played the night before for her. It's incredible to believe that Mom & Dad payed us visits in the same way at almost the same time. & I do miss Harold Reid's humor. They certainly were a class act in every sense of the word.
I was the class of '79 graduating from Grover Cleveland High in NYC. Grew up listening to country and two good friends also took to country as well. The Statler Brothers and Oak Ridge Boys were among our favorites.
I met these guys when I was 12. I am 47 now. I had the Old Testament Album and wore it out, Now I have the cassettes of both the old and the new testaments. They just don't make music like this anymore, so much feeling and heart and soul in every note, harmonies and melodies that are unrivaled. Thanks for sharing your talent with us, boys, love you all and Jimmy, too.
I'm going to be 52 on July 31, 2020. This song takes me right back to being a little kid, in the car, with my parents on the weekly drive to see one of my aunts for Sunday dinner.
Saw them in concert....sang to every one of their songs...just like the entire crowd ..we all knew pretty much every word from every verse... awesome concert!!!
Always loved this song, doesnt matter what year you graduated high school, we all had our dreams. Hey. I just saw another video, of a tribute group to the Statlers. They really did a good job.
I was just a year behind you Harold - I was class of '58. Thanks for the memories, and for the fabulous lyrics. These lyrics touch on a little bit of everything... our hopes and dreams and insecurities and fears, and triumphs and failures, our confidence and confusion. That seems kind of unique. Ed
I love how all the country performers in the 60s & 70s took pride in how the looked on stage. The so-called country music performers try to look like they got their clothes out of the dirty clothes pile & they just woke up & got out of bed & decided to walk on stage!!! Much love from Mobile Alabama.
There's one line from this song that I believe is true for all generations: "Maybe we just thought the world would change to fit our needs". Too many people are disillusioned because they think the world needs to change just for them instead of them trying to adapt to an ever changing world.
Calling them poets, Kurt Vonnegut loved these guys, especially this song and 'Flowers on the Wall'. Vonnegut's favorite line in this one was: "Where Mavis finally wound up is anybody's bet."
Class of '87, and this song still is true. 494 others, and me. Dreams realized and dashed, but the song portrays life. "Things get complicated, when you get past 18". So true.

@@solracer66 Hmm, change Sears to Walmart.
The Statler Brothers always reminds me of my mother. ❤
Harold Reid died yesterday April24, 2020. The bass singer is gone but not forgotten. RIP Harold.
Which one is he ? 😢
Amen !

Sorry for your loss 🙏.
I love all the songs where Lew is singing. Everyone can relate to this song. Just change the year and it;s your story. They were total class and there will never be anyone like them again.
And I think that by 2010 people with Chron’s disease have the same life expectancy....just born 20 years too early.....what a loss......
I love this song
COULD NOT agree more about Lew. We had no idea what a treasure we had. First concert I ever saw. It was at Freedom Hall in Louisville. Line that resonates? Things get complicated when you get past 18.
I agree.
Yeah love jimmy fortune too!
No one can ever touch these guys.
You said it! Nobody!
Nope. Not ever
How about 'best country music band of all time?'

And Harold actually did marry Brenda. RIP, good sir. You made a lot of people happy.
They all have such beautiful voices.
My dad’s favorite song... we used sit and talk and listen to this... he died last year... I thought I would listen again...
Sorry for your loss. My dad died in 2019. I can relate. I'm here because I love the Statlers, but my dad was a big fan of Hank Williams Sr and I listen to some of his favorite Hank songs from time to time when I'm thinking about him.
Lew passed on early an now we've lost Harold ! Some of the best music was sang by these guys an we will always remember them ! May the R.I.P
I was in the class of '57 & we just had our 60th reunion.
Statler brothers and the four tops are my favorites and the greatest ever in any kind of music !🇺🇸🚗
So sad to think about Lew DeWitt who died way too early😞🙏🏻✝️such a beautiful voice. they all have beautiful voices of course 😌.
I got to meet Lew..He was such a gentleman
And now we've lost Harold Reid, who passed away on this past Friday.

This song works with my beloved Class of 1987. Been a great run for us 80s kids.
👍💧😀
That was about Harold's class. No one weaves lyrics like the Statlers!
This song gives me all kinds of feelings… bless the class of ‘57
This is one of the great songs of all time. Timeless, terrific.

My father loves this song, too. I don't know how much longer he will be around. I'm sorry for your loss.
Lew was a superstar really
It had only been 15 years since the class of 57 graduated when this song came out. They still had time to live their dreams 🙂
That means it would be the Class of '09 today, wow that is mind-boggling...
The best Country group of all time ... hands down. God I loved those guys.
