I arrived at this station on a train from Grand Central Station to Rome to visit my mom’s family every summer from 1941 to the early 50’s….too bad they don’t run the old steam engines….I will never forget the siz of those wheels as we were standing on the station on the way home…thank you
When I was a young g girl , I sat on the benches (few times) waiting for a train.i remember crowds waiting for the train to go east & west. Sad to me to see it today. I appreciate the video. Thank you, kindly.
What do you mean virtually abandoned? The only minor thing about it is that it's unstaffed, but multiple trains stop here a day and it has thousands of passengers each year. For being a small city, it is doing well. Nowhere near abandoned
Thanks Rambler. The Rome station is one of my walking spots. In 1966 we took a NYC train from Dayton Ohio to Rome to visit family. Heavy snow around Christmas
Realized the last time I had been to that station was coming home from Plattsburgh for the holidays and my dad in Whitesboro asking me to get off in Rome instead. Circa 1985! And yes, I understood your Get Smart reference! Cheers from chilly (it's winter) Buenos Aires!
When I was in grad school in the early 70's out east I used Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited to travel home for Christmas. The coldest I ever felt was when I briefly stepped off the train at the Rome station stop one night on one of those trips. And I grew up in the NW Indiana snow belt. Cheers to Witold from Peanut and me in Wisconsin!
That station sure takes you back in time. Reminds me of going to the old NYCentral station in Syracuse when my grandmother came in from Buffalo and how busy it was.
Loved the tour of the amazing Rome Amtrak station... Great commentary explaining everything along the way !! Had to laugh at the "Get Smart" reference. Used to watch that all the time. Like 165 !!
Hi, watching from York, England! Thanks for another great video; always good to see some passenger trains and the beautiful Rome Station. I hope they soon get the funds to renovate the subway.
Great abounded steel mill in the Northwest Adirondack Park Region with a narrow gauge line there as well so lots of Railroad stuff going on up that way still.
A well-built Depot certainly large enough in its day for the larger crowds that were going by rail. Back then every city seemed to be putting the pressure on railroads for the most ornate stations and everyone wanted something unique I'm sensing there's nothing else inside of this structure and I'm sure there's some people wondering why Rome has to own this building. I truly hope the head counts are better on other trains and so with no agent means no check baggage Of course that means we still have to pay for heating and air conditioning and hopefully no vandalism occurs. Time for Bitold to don his uniform and be the patrol dog
Just out of curiosity, what time of day did you shoot this film? If that was the west bound Lake Shore Limited, it typically does not depart Schenectady until 7:30 to 7:50 PM. If it's the east bound Lake Shore Limited it typically does not arrive in Schenectady until about 2:40 in the afternoon.
The Maple Leaf arrived on the advertised (12:03) while the on-time eastbound Lake Shore went past about 12:25 (it was due to arrive in Utica at 12:37--Rome is 13 miles west of Utica).
Greetings from Tonawanda NY! The Rome, NY station needs money from a generally hostile State! New York is going to insist on battery powered vehicles that will fail frequently in both summer and winter!
Hostile state? New York robustly supports passenger rail. Without state support, you would not have the multiple trains going out to western NY. Contrast this with backwards states like Indiana that are openly hostile to passenger rail, and cut back service to only a few trains a week.
Also battery power is continously making strides and is proving more reliable. Unless you live under a rock or can't get your mindset out of the 1960s, you would realize that. Thank goodness we are now making strides in technology and the hostile mentality of keep things the same are dying along with the boomers who support it.
Beautiful station I will visit it when I come home this summer. I love the Carolina Blue sky
Great and well-filmed video! Will have to stop here! I'm in Rome all the time!
Like the maple leaf I took it a couple of times to Toronto. The view crossing Niagara Falls was worth the trip
Wow! Beautiful station.

You sure do get a sense of "railroading past" when inside the Rome Station. Thanks for sharing your remembrances.
Sad to see such a beautiful old station virtually abandoned today. At least they're keeping it maintained.

I'm happy it's not being vandalized and bums sleeping in it.
Very nice presentation of the Amtrak station building. The Amtrak trains were beautifully filmed. Many greetings from Germany

Good to hear from you, it’s 89 degrees here today
That's a beautiful station. Thanks for the video.
Looking in from North Yorkshire, England. Thanks for your wonderful videos.

Very cool building!! I hope the funds come through. Tell Witold hi!

Great catch catching this limited led by 98 and awesome catch catching heritage 46 on 63
Awesome coverage great station.
I see remnants of rails on the platform. This used to be a 4 track trunk line.
Been there many years ago.
Great abounded steel mill in the Northwest Adirondack Park Region with a narrow gauge line there as well so lots of Railroad stuff going on up that way still.
I plan to ride amtrak someday
Hey rail rambler awesome catch of 2 Amtrak trains . Wish people would use trains instead of planes to travel the USA.

Do freight trains, also use those same tracks ??
Yes. CSX owns and dispatches their trains as well as Amtrak trains thru Rome, NY station.
What kind of phone tripod do you use???
No tripod. I use an DJI Osmo Pocket 3 to video, great stability.

Have they/will they add an elevator to the platform for ADA compliance?
Don Adams ?with the shoe phone!
Sorry about that Chief

@emu5088 give me combustion engines any day!
Does the Lake Shore Limited stop in Utica at all? I see UCA listed on Amtrak timetables
Yes, the Lake Shore stops in Utica
