I was teaching World Religions in Toronto Canada and took my students to the marvellous Cham San Temple in that city. They have huge statues of the Buddhas and Boddhisattvas, a monastery and prayer halls; it is truly remarkable. Inside the main hall, was a large effigy of Amitabha Buddha and after my students had moved on with the tour, I remained briefly to offer a mantra-prayer to this being. As I was about to turn away, I was shocked and delighted to see the eyes open and turn toward me. I consider this miracle as proof that our prayers and meditations make a difference, and that the glorious beings who watch over Buddhist practice and belief are indeed REAL and respond. This gives me great hope. I did not tell my students of this experience, but it seems apt to do so here. Blessings to all sentient beings.

I love how the narrator pronounces the word "Buddha". The majority of Buddhists in Vietnam also practice the Pure Land tradition.

I love how much this video clearly understands the subtleties of Buddhist thought and practice.
The logical circle is quite interesting. On the one hand, it’s the easy path because the work is done for you by the Buddha, all you need is to recite his name in complete faith. On the other hand, if you didn’t get transported to the pure land it must be because you didn’t have complete faith, so it’s your own fault and nothing to do with faulty doctrine. Since it’s not actually possible to choose that you believe the whole thing is immune to analysis since you can only find out if you already have complete faith.

There is also the Pure land of the Medicine Buddha, Lapis Lazuli Radiance Tathagata. Far in the Eastern direction. The Lord said that it is equal to Sukavati in merit and purity. I wish to be reborn there.
Pure Land is no paradise, it's more like buddhist bootcamp where there are ideal conditions to learn and practice Dharma and achieve Awakening

It's not about bringing the Pure Land here. That's absurd. The Pure Land is a real place and Amitabha Buddha is a real person. It's not an allegory or state of mind.

While us Buddhists do believe these are real places, the pure lands of Lord Amitabha and other Buddhas are aspects of our mind as well :)
This is not a universal stance among pureland Buddhists, especially in Japan

May Peace Prevail On Earth

I have practiced Buddhism for years but recently my faith has been shaken and challenged. I kept asking myself, if the original words of the Historical Buddha as written in the Pali Canon did not referenced Pureland Buddhism directly, is it truly a form of Buddhism? Please shed some light on this troubled question I have so I may return back to Buddhism with greater faith. Namaste.

Pure land is a different planet
Mind creates everything. Buddha stated.
Taoism stated, everything is emptiness..aka temporary
im a lay buddhist. im very confused about buddhism. i see buddhism as philosophy and a guide to live my life, thus when the buddha teaches to investigate everythng and question everything, even his own teachings. i respond to that. i dont believe in faith, as i cant question nor investigate nor prove or disprove its claims, parts of buddhas teachings require faith, which i can either chose to believe in the dogma or not. maybe someone can help explain the contradictions in buddhas teachings?

Yes, the topic of faith in Buddhism is subtle and it doesn't help that when we translate the words and concepts to our own language and culture we inevitably have to make it fit into the "conceptual molds" that are available to us. I will try to address the topic of faith in Part 3 of the series. Stay tuned!
@DRBURUclips that would be great thank you. If you can please dig deep into this topic. I don't mean just the artificial faith that different cultures have propagated over the centuries, such as the influence of superstition and stories of supernatural act and phenomenon. I really want to understand from Buddha's teachings and the contradiction of certain parables where I have to believe or need to have the faith in order to classified as a Buddhist. Fundamentals and dogmas such as believing in rebirth and karma are intrinsic to Budhist teachings. However it's also asking to have the faith that such processes exist. How can I prove that rebirth and karma exist? These thoughts have always troubled me. If I don't believe in this, then am I still regarded as a Buddhist?
Saying all of this, I do try my best to practice right thought, right speech and right act,. Far from a good nor bad person, just a normal and very ordinary guy that resonate to the Buddha's ultimate quest for truth and peace of mind.
A person is always mindful "I don't want to think ". This is the realm of ignorance and for the foolish.
A person who has plenty of wandering thoughts is an ordinary person.
A person who cultivate uninterrupted virtuous thoughts eventually will attain a pure mind.
A person who has no attachment is called an Arhat.
A person who has no discriminative thoughts one is a Bodhisattva.
A person who has no attachment, discrimination and wandering thoughts, except the thoughts Amituofo, one is a Buddha.
Uninterrupted thought means one virtuous thought follow by another virtuous thought.
Eg. Amituofo, Amituofo, Amituofo etc...
Not thought, awareness. Two different mind states.

As a Gelugpa practitioner I have obsoletely no interest or desire to go to the Pure Land. This is not the right view to develop bodhicitta as the path of the bodhisattva.

Are u confident that u can liberate yourself in this lifetime? And not fall to lesser realms or able to encounter the dharma in the next life? Amitabha created Pureland as a mean for sentient beings to cultivate into buddhahood before returning to our world to deliver more deluded/suffering sentient brings...it's not just to enjoy there forever doing nothing else that benefits sentient beings of the 10 directions....it's like how can u be a swimming pool lifeguard to save others before u mastered the skill of swimming itself? Pure Land is a Mahayana concept that started more than 900-1200 years after the Buddha died. It took about 400 years to even publish the the Pali Canon based on philosophical and doctrinal analyses, discourses and Vinaya. Assuming Buddha's death around 483 BCE and the establishment of a recognizable Pure Land movement by the 5th century CE, it would be approximately 900 to 1000 years after the Buddha's death that Pure Land Buddhism began to take a distinct form in China. To put is simply, Pure Land is not based on Logic or Philosophy but rather "faith". @@Kelvin-oq1rp
