"Only a sith deals in absolutes"... which is funnily enough... an abolute :D
Great video my friend, there is always something to learn from every interpretation :)

True, or better, from a good number of them (now!). Because in all this years I’ve seen pretty terrible things too! Ahahahahahah

    Very good insights!
Thinking about my own HEMA journey and also that of other people, I believe that the narrow interpretations which lead to absolutes are often simply the result of little experience. If somebody is a new or inexperienced fencer or new to historical sources (or both), they will tend to take them at face value because they haven't yet developed an understanding of the context. The more experience they gain, the clearer it will become that absolutes are not as fixed as they often seem at first glance.

Exactly! It something that happens quite normally through the evolution of one persons own comprehension of manuals in relation to reality.
The more reality someone ends up eating, the more he understands manuals.

The important thing to remember is that the authors of fencing treatises were not necessarily good teachers, and definitely not good at teaching through text only - the latter because no one really was at the time. So, imagine that one teacher you once knew, the one that couldn't explain things properly to you no matter how he tried, even if he knew the subject matter - we all met one, especially those who went to universities - and imagine that guy wrote the treatise in front of you.
Suddenly, all those absolute advice that aren't really absolute and meant only as strong suggestions, and in their proper context at that, make a lot more sense.
And even the always keep attacking advice isn't that far off - you should always try to be on the offensive, if you can. Only time you should not do that is if you can't on account of getting stabbed if you don't defend. It's the "if you can" part that some decided to ignore.

Well done! I would LOVE to see more of these types of interpretation videos. Entertaining and informative and good for both new and current students of HEMA

I agree with the general idea that dealing with absolutes is not a great idea, and I see techniques not as a rigid step by step thing to do but more as a "here is a situation, do this, obviously it applies to other similar situations".
I know it's not the main subject of the video, but I think Ringeck text was not a great example since depending on how you intepret zornhaw it can be done with both fighters taking a full step forward (I personally think is a very short strike for this very reason) and not really a defensive action, more like "attack this way, if he also attacks you are gonna hit him and he won't hit you, or if he don't attack then stab".
Long story short, after reading Ringeck for a long time i think it's in general pretty consistent, agree with the video, not with the example, but good video anyway.

This is a very important point. I sometimes encounter people who take the sources so literally that they even dismiss a successful hit, like "oh yeah, you hit me, but since you've not attacked me from my left side as Liechtenauer says, and didn't applied true time as Silver describes, you're not actually doing HEMA and you wouldn't have succeeded in reality..." Our ancestors were all about effectiveness and the result, reading the sources too much in an academical and absolute way will not bring us closer to the real fencing masters.
Thank you Federico, your videos are getting better and better! :-D

Great video and I like the Codex Astartes references. In my job, we have a number of techniques but when you ask any of us “which is most important/useful?”, the answer you will invariably get is “It depends.” Context is huge in some many things. Uh-oh, maybe too much Schola-Gladiatoria watching here 😉😂. But I don’t think any martial arts system can work without an it depends/context driven approach. Fiore gives us context throughout - this is a good play, if you are in armor... Sorry, too many words. Really liked the video as a reminder not to be too strict in some language interpretation from the old masters.

Great advise, thank you! There is a science in interpreting this manuscripts, beyond their literal meaning, that`s for sure. And also we should take into consideration the mentality of that period and the way people used to communicate to each other in general.

Hi Federico ! Great video, like always :)
Could you please tell me which manual the first image you show in the video is from, and what is the guard of the fighter on the right hand side ? I had never seen it and I' m pretty curious about it.
Buy the look of the drawings, I' d say it' s German and late XV, but I might be completely wrong haha

I don’t understand why people think they need to use archaic Blackletter script and fake parchment background. It’s hard enough to understand the concepts without this.
