Hey man, nice video and glad you had fun. I’ve been fishing that river for many years,,, don’t salmon fish any longer, but I do enjoy heading up for SH or just watching the salmon come up. Anyway, since you’re new at this, I’d be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about that fishery. First, let’s get this out of the way,,, an unmolested salmon will bite out of aggression or survival, Had many salmon crush my fly. I knew immediately he hit your fly/egg by the way he acted. Yep, they will bear down and hold in fast current and make those boils. . Second, always have a wading staff with you,. Anyway, sounds like you might need back next year so if you wanna discuss this type of fishing, let me know,, good luck! 18:00
Hey man, I'd love to come back one day or to an NY river that's similar. That's good information to know, thank you. Everyone was saying it was a tough season for them this year, any ideas why?
@@trouttopiafishing Not just 1 reason. Actually, the fishery has been going downhill over the past 10 yrs or so due to Global Warming, low water levels, changes in river structure due to development, and a host of issues happening out in the Lake. The river is losing holding water where these fish love to hang, hide, etc, My unscientific thoughts are that the fish don’t stay in the river as long as they previously did. It seems they run right up to the hatchery in a matter of days, Fish never used to spawn in the DSR, now it’s common knowledge that fish are spawning down there and right back to the Lake they go. Salmon were native to that river a long time ago but were overfished and decimated. So the extinction of an apex predator allowed the alewives population to boom in Lake O. Eventually, the state decided to take salmon from Michigan and rear them in the hatchery and release them into the SR and lake to forage on the alewives and “balance” out the lake. Anyway, I’m getting off track, Here’s an example of what I’m talking about. I fish the DSR quite a bit when I go up there. Two years ago I walked down to the confluence of the estuary and the river. I shit you not, it was about 6 inches to 1 ft deep the entire way across the river. How do I know? Because I walked across it. Think of the number of fish that hit that spot and said, F this I’m going back to the Lake. Right now there are a lot of fish out in the estuary, but they ain’t comin up. So, after that long winded story, it’s a myriad of issues, but I’m going up Wednesday!!!! I still love it!
@@RAMOSACER Thanks for all the info man! Your unscientific theory sounds spot on to me. Definitely read about the Atlantic salmon getting decimated...Down here on the Chesapeake bay it's bounced back to a c+ which is the best grade in a decade so theirs always hope. Hopefully the lake O watershed bounces back cuz I'm ready for it. I'll keep all this in mind and contact you in the future for any other related questions. Hope you had a fun trip today!
Hey man. I’m a new subscriber. Looking forward to watching your videos. Good job and great fish!
