Instantly subscribed. Live in a small town by binghamton and have been thru pulaski many times, never even knew about salmon river. Gonna plan a trip up in the summer.
Just so nobody is confused, these Salmon don't tend to "bite" when in the river. You glide your whatever towards them and hope their mouth opens as you swing by them and if you feel anything, set hook. You may or may not have foul hooked them. That is the name of the game here. The trout however do bite. Enjoy 🎣
Some rivers/species, yes, for sure. However, when you plunk, or back-troll with plugs, or fish directly below float, then no, they are indeed biting. They aren't "feeding", but their instincts kick in, or they are trying to fight off other. 10-foot long leaders, etc. is indeed "flossing", however. Fly-line fishing can also, unfortunately, be flossing as well.
Great footage guys! Thank you. Still waiting to catch my first salmon, maybe Monday 10/19 with my wife on the Salmon River. I just got her hooked on fishing, and she'll probably outfish me, lol. Spent a few hours at Oswego on 10/15 but went home disappointed; not one hookup. I'll use the 10% perk and get myself some good fireball salmon eggs to use on the Salmon River this winter.
I went there last September and booked two a two day charter on the lake. The first day out was awful. It was cold, rainy with 3’ chop. Got bad sea sick but toughed it out though we only caught two decent Cohos. Next day the weather was perfect. Caught a 28 and 24# King and an 8# Brown Trout. After the Charters on the lake I tried the River but to be honest I didn’t know what I was doing and saw only a few others catch anything so it was slow going on the River.
Great Video and it's inspired me to go Salmon fishing today at Pulaski Salmon River where you are fishing it's owned by private property it's called Douglas Salmon run it's a and they charge $85.00 per person to fishing at Douglas run you have to book that place in advance to fishing in that spot
They get a weird color when getting ready to spawn. They turn bright brick red in Alaska. In Oregon the fall runs turned black and the springers turned red.
Good video, good drone footage, and good explanation of the unique dynamics of this very popular fishery. PS Those people that complain about revealing hot fishing spots seem like, well, selfish people, who don't want other people to enjoy the great fishing they enjoy. Let's love our fellow man more than that. Keep up the good work Pautzke.
Not true at Douglass place you pay a lot of money to fish there we all hate it...the honey holes we locals try to keep for ourselves witch are the creeks in pulaski richland and sandy creek I can tell you guys about places that would blow your minds...I don't care I will share some of the (secret places) just not on RUclips I own a bar in sandy creek named busters pit stop 2 when you come up again stop in and we can talk I've been fishing the creeks for over 40 years you would love it most of us locals never fish the river way to many people anyway my name is up above so stop in
Those are some impressive sized chinooks and steelhead for coming out of a freshwater lake rather than the Pacific Ocean, the forage must be tremendous in Lake Ontario.
Awesome video! Great job. Question. I know you guys fish with fly rods, but I'm looking for a spinning setup for steelhead and salmon. Any suggestions? I'm looking at a 9 foot 9 in rod, rated from 6 to 12 lb line. Is that enough for the kings as well? I know it's an awesome steelhead rod. Thank you
I used a Noodle rod spooled with 10# test and had both awesome fights and landed many kings and Cohos in the 20 # range. Rod is 12 feet long I think and a old school Mitchel 300.
Great Lakes have browns, steelhead, lake trout, brook trout, splake, coho salmon, king salmon, Atlantic salmon, and pink salmon in them. Kinda like a giant aquarium lol
They stocked all andromenous fish in Great Lakes. Warm water fish and lake trout and Brook trout were the only natural fish there. Only char no natural trout. They spawn there now but weren’t there originally.
Head to the west coast if you’re coming all the way from Ireland , the fish aren’t already half dead when they arrive . Lots of video to see from the west whether BC or Alaska , you have chrome fish , not black
DSR prices up to 105 a day I believe I always wanted to fish it but the prices to me seem like if you get skunked you spent that money for nothing. But when the fish are there they are nice and fresh.
Why are you running fly rods with bait in shallow runs? Seems more like flossing. And I dont know what the standard is for Midwest Salmon is, but those are Boots. Ready to spawn and shit for eating and fighting quality.
Exactly. It is flossing. The Salmon River attracts all types. I've been there several times. Not good. Surfcasting rods with 50 lb. test ripping weighted bare hooks in the shallows.
Flossing is determined by the leader length and if you swipe / pull at the fish with the excess line. You can dead drift or swing some eggs with a short leader with no issues. Not saying everyone at the salmon river is perfect or a great sport, but you can drift and hook fish and have it not be flossing
I fished the salmon river when snagging was legal. I also fished the black river in Dexter, NY. To be honest, the fishing sucks there along the salmon from Pulaski up stream to the hatchery. You get wall to wall idiots who will mug you for your fishing spot. And that private stretch on the salmon is no better. I feel sorry for the people who hire guides and book times along private stretches of the river. Most of the time these Gucci upped idiots will be the ones who are the most rude people you will ever meet. To catch late season king salmon all you need is a 8 to 10ft spinning rod rated light to medium action, 15lb test line, decent hooks (mustad hooks are a safe bet) salmon roe dipped in a vasoline Berkley trout/salmon scent mix, and it is game on. I do not recommend using fly rods. These fly fishermen will use light tippets and leaders and will play the fish until it is caught. Playing a fish for long periods causes the fish to build up lactic acid which will kill the fish. If you like fishing in a commando hand to hand combat setting, book a trip to Douglas Salmon Run and get ripped off. You will pay a hefty price to fish a crowded pay to fish area and you will not even catch ffg fish in this over fished river.
These fish should not be eaten , they are spawners and are way beyond their prime . They'll be dead shortly after this and start to rot away while still alive .
Can fish even digest artificial salmon eggs and the netting? Where does the artificial netting and artificial eggs end up? Most likely in the environment? How many pounds of lead are in the that river? We stopped going there years ago. It's a crowdfest. We took up real fishing, catch and release fly fishing.
I live between 2 Great Lakes here in Canada and we USED to have a fishery like this. Our Ministry of Natural Resources in combination with total excessive Native netting just ruined it. You couldnt get a spot on the river night or day, now it is a ghost town. Fucked it right up. Chinook and Trout fishing. RIP the Sydenenham River, Owen Sound.
Your in the dsr it don’t matter what you throw at them they hit anything throw a cigarette but on your hook o can bet you will catch them the same as your eggs

Hi Bill, Can't wait for you to bring your cigs. Should be a blast! And, yes, out of the 45 times we've fished the Salmon River, we've spent two days in the DSR. Sorry that's too much for you.
It's not bait, by law you have to have something on your hook. Salmon do not feed once they run upstream. Basically you have to " foul hook " the fish in the mouth in order to keep it. Anywhere else and you have to release it or get a huge fine. 95% of the time it's a foul hook lol
LOTS of fish in river!!! caught 2 kings and a steelhead yesterday at Ballfield.
I have so many good memories fishing that river while stationed at Fort Drum. Great video!
That river hog looks absolutely scrumptious! 🤙🏽🏆
Great video thank you for sharing. Love your cure has done well for me on the Klick this year and the Yakima river when it’s open.

Thanks for the advice, I have some of your eggs. Just checked the river this morning! Looking forward to the salmon run!

I watched this and now I miss home, lol. Y'all forgot to mention the gigantic northern Pike. A bit closer to the mouth, but still, there awesome too.
I fished the Salmon river back in 1991. Up state New York is very beautiful
I fish the ballpark every yr..I snapped to rods this yr. 🎣🎣
Really informative!! Nice video!! I always like when the salmon crowd left and the Steelhead remained.

Got a cabin in the Osceola Florence area I’ll be going to salmon river next year to fish I’ve been having fun close to home
Why are they so dark so quickly out of the Lake? Here in Washington state when they are so dark we put them back.
Great video friend
Were you guys floating your eggs? Nice catches.
I’m stationed here in fort drum and I want to try fishing for salmon and what’s a great setup to start with?
People really appreciate it when you show up with 6wt trout rods for kings , walking the fish up and down the hole for 45 min.
I would like to go there this yera, what kinda of rod, reel, line, and hook are you using?.

Could someone tell me what brand/model of the greyish/blue suit the gentleman is wearing in this video?!
Casey said they are Compass 360
WHAT GEAR WERE YOU USING ?
That fish didn’t eat that sh*t 😂
Yeah none of em did they literally snag so many fish
Salmon don’t eat anyway. You will never hook one deep in the throat In a river.

when is a good time to go there? Do you need to buy a license? how many fish you can get home?
Late/Sept early October for Salmon after that the Steelhead run. 3 day limit Salmon

They don't taste like salmon, because they are not from the ocean. so it's a bit of a disappointment to eat them.
