Royal Burgh of Culross | Historic Culross is one of Scotland's most picturesque towns.
It is believed that Culross was founded by St Serf, and is located in the south west of Fife, overlooking the Firth of Forth.
Wandering around this charming town is about as close to stepping back in time to the 16th century as possible. The whitewashed, red-tiled buildings are well preserved, such as the Town House.
The nearby ochre-coloured Culross Palace, built by wealthy coal merchant George Bruce in the late 16th century, is in fact not a palace but a grand and impressive house. You can explore the small rooms and connecting passageways, with wonderful painted ceilings, pine panelling, antique furniture and curios. The garden is planted with grasses, herbs and vegetables of the period.
Take a stroll up a cobbled alleyway known as Back Causeway, which is complete with a raised central aisle that was formerly used by noblemen to separate them from the ‘commoners’. This leads up behind the magnificent Town House to the Study, a restored house, built in 1610, that takes its name from the small room at the top of the corbelled projecting tower.
OUTLANDER FILMING LOCATION:
The lovely town of Culross, in Fife, has been used in several Outlander episodes. The town is owned by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) who have been instrumental in helping preserve the town’s historical buildings. The town is best remembered as being used as Cranesmuir in season 1. Much of the town was painted a dark grey colour for filming, which has reverted to the original white. Despite this, there is no mistaking this idyllic-looking location. And, with a wealth of beautiful buildings it was in demand once more for season 4.
Used in several season 1 episodes of the TV Series Outlander, The Mercat Cross (in the centre of Culross) acted as the centre of Cranesmuir. Here we find Geillis Duncan’s house and the historically picturesque town square where Geillis is sentenced. It is also here that Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) rescue the thief, Tammas, when his ear is pinned to the post.
Later, in spring of 2018, the Outlander cast and crew returned for season 4 filming. This time, with Nell Hudson and Sophie Skelton, filming took place outside a house near Mercat Cross. This was for scenes, in episode 4.07 ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’, involving Bree, Laoghaire and Joanie, when Laoghaire rescues Bree from the cold, then later discovers that she is Jamie’s daughter - a notable deviation from the book.

Мужественная, гордая и свободолюбивая страна! Все вокруг поражает своей суровой красотой, а дальние горизонты наполнены волшебной мистикой, словами трудно описать эти чувства, там тени дальних предков этой удивительной страны, спасибо
I was the driver of the refuse truck who serviced Culross for almost 25 years until I retired in 2017 and it was a challenge getting a 25 ton refuse collection vehicle up and down those tight narrow cobbled streets . . . but as you say it is a beautiful village with loads of history.
I’ll bet! 😬 It definitely is 🙂 thanks for watching. Have a great weekend!
Beautiful. Brings back happy memories for me.
Glad to hear that! Love that my walking tours help people stroll down memory lane ☺️ thanks for watching 👍🏻
Great video of Culross. Have a great week and I've just subscribed to your channel.

Thank you so much David for leaving this very kind comment. Much appreciated 🙂 I’m so glad you got so much out of the video & hope you enjoy my other virtual tours. Warm regards
Thank you for this gem of a tour. I do know of Culross, having lived for quite a few years during my secondary school time in nearby Dunfermline, itself steeped in history, but never got around to discovering Culross, except for travelling through in the car with my Father driving, but we never stopped!
If you are looking at other walking tours, please consider Dunfermline itself, with its Abbey, plus the adjacent Pittencrieff Park and the Andrew Carnegie birthplace, amongst other sections
Thank you so much! So kind of you 🙂 someone else has asked me to do a walking tour of Dunfermline for their mother, so will definitely be doing that in the New Year. Hope you had a nice holiday season & Happy New Year 2023 when it comes.
Another lovely video! I’m a Fifer born & bred, still living here. Read another comment saying you should do Dunfermline, please do if you can! I went to High School there. Really enjoying your videos. 🥰
Thank you again for taking the time to leave these lovely comments. I really like to hear how people are enjoying my videos ☺️ Dunfermline is definitely on the list 😉 hope you have a great week.
