The Best Way to Get Your Private Pilots License

  • Getting your PPL doesn’t have to be a long drawn out process taking a couple years and costing 10’s of thousands of dollars. It can be a smooth, efficiently and quick process. That being said, there is a mindset you have to have.
    Taking a hyper-focused approach to achieving your goal of getting one of these will be your best path forward.
    The first step is get the FAA private Pilot written exam out of the way. You can do this online and the best online ground school is M Zero A.com. Jason Schappert' s content is amazing, instructionally solid and well done.
    The one thing that breaks up momentum in your flight training is interruptions. If you take the time off and give it 100% of your attention you can have all your flight time done within a month. Aviation requires you to be all in- you have to give it 100%. Start off with this mindset right away and apply it to your flight training. It will be better all around.
    Have you always wanted to learn how to fly but now you are over 50? Get out there and start and learn! There are so many people in there 50's and 60's who are just starting to fly so what are you waiting for?

    You might "not have to see the written test again", however, you will see and use everything you've studied in the written test once you become a pilot. So, its more than just getting through a test, it's being able to apply the material you worked so hard on in practice.

    Research your flight school as well. There are schools out there with instructors whose main goals are to build time to move on. I am shocked when I hear that students don't normally solo until 50-60 hours! Additionally, try to do it at a less busy airport. One of the airports in my area has two flight schools at a Class C. Many times they have to taxi and wait 15-20 minutes before taking off due to the airline traffic...

      Good point but I would add a "unless" to that. My first flight school (where I did all my private pilot) was located on the class-C airport in an ideal location, just a couple of minutes from the end of the main use runways and also the seasonal alternate. However, when I decided to get college credits for what I was doing and moved across the field, then the 10 - 15 minutes on the taxiways and "waiting in line" started.
      So unless the training facility is in a good location, see if you can find one at a smaller class D field or less busy class C.

    Great advice!!! I did Kings ground school then once the written test was complete I did all my flying. My whole process started March 25 and I finished as a PPL on May 29 with a total of 45 flight hours. Not only was I more immersed in learning but saved some money along the way!!! Now I have a "license to learn."

      @@jjordan6066 I really enjoyed the Kings material, it had short & fun videos with short quizes after every section- this really worked for my learning style. I especially like that I have lifetime access to the materials and can watch as a refresher anytime.

    I would think getting the medical done first would be the most appropriate. If you fail that, you will have saved a lot of time and money. Just my $0.02

    Ted - funny I tell people the same thing that getting your PPL - treat it like a PT job. I think scheduling those big blocks of flight time might be a challenge around here on weekends especially in the warmer weather. I traveled weekly so I did the ground school videos to/from work and at night and scheduled 2 hours instruction during the day on return travels days and once on a weekend. Then I wasn’t missing work or family obligations. I was lucky I bought into a partnership with an owner that wasn’t ready to give up flying and he was happy to see the plane used and share his passion. I would recommend others find a flying club - most are desperately looking for new members and they normally have a well maintained designated training plane and CFI’s that train for fun vs just the hours.

    Good tips, I used Sporty’s for ground school and found an instructor I clicked with first and he had privileges at several flight schools, then committed to flying 3-4 days/week as not to relearn from previous lesson.

    Hi Ted I just watched your Podcast with Nancy and was really impressed with your outlook and I’m heading to my house in North Lakeland in a week and would love to meet you because all that positive energy rubs off and you have tons of it and great personality. I’m disability retired from Law Enforcement but can’t sit around and do nothing so I volunteer about 30 hours a week working as a Veterans Service Officer to pay it forward because life is better helping others when you can.       Absolutely in fact I thought about going somewhere warm when I was originally going to do it but that’s how I ended up doing my instrument training is I just took three weeks off and went down to Florida to do it in October and it was wonderful. Thanks for watching

    Good advice. When I was learning several of my fellow students had their licence within six weeks but most of them were hoping to progress to being commercial pilots. It can be slightly more difficult here in Ireland as the weather is often against us with low cloud and rain coming in from the Atlantic. However, I know of a few who headed off to flight school in Florida for a couple of months.

    You could always get your glider pilot license first, takes 15 hrs don't need a medical and you can add hours, endorsements etc. Including IFR, check it out. The trick is to get your glider training and hours with a motorglider.

      @@Over50andLearningToFly thanks, I just learned about it myself. I'm over 50 too LOL. I learned of a school in Florida that does the entire deal for $3000. Pipstrel has a two seat motor glider they train on and it's a high wing 150 style plane. Great thing about it is you power up high find your conditions, cut power and the prop feathers and you cruise in silence for a long time and either land or crank up the engine and go back up and do it again. You can get instrument rated and cross country on half the fuel and no medical. Most would use this to get their ticket cheap but I think gliders are a blast and your counting the hours all the time.

    Hey there Over 50. Why are you saying that it takes 60 hours to complete? Unless I missed something in the FAA requirements, it only takes 40 hours to get your check ride? Oh yea, forgot to tell you I have been flying for 60 years and have an ATP and 44,000 hours of flight time...

      @@Over50andLearningToFly Well maybe in your video you might have said that the FAA only requires 40 hours but the average student may need more hours before the CFI will sign them off to get their check ride done so that the CFI knows that they are going to pass that check ride....

      Hello over 50 and yes the nation wide average is around 60 hours before the CFI will be sent to the DE. I have told many friends to get an old sectional and get the computer program FlightSimX and practice navigation. Told them by practicing at home on the computer will probably save 15-20 hours OFF the 69 hour average. Happy Flying…😊

    Ted, been watching a while. Thanks for the info AND the motivation. I have not been serious about getting going, but am getting closer to closing the business and getting going. Years ago, I trained and flew ultralights before FAA Part 103 SPL rules.
    I have a question. Can I do all the online study, and take the test before finding a flight instructor to train with?

      It's a good idea to have your medical done before you start anything. I know a guy who delved into a licensing program just to find out he had to give it all up halfway through when he couldn't pass the physical.

      They’re all fantastic I did M0A for my private pilot I did Sportys for my instrument and I did King Schools for my commercial but they’re all excellent it’s just which one works for you the best -thanks for watching!

    Great video! At what point during the process did you get your medical? And how involved was that? Do you need to see a certain doctor, or can your GP do it? Also. How long did you subscribe to MzeroA? Just enough to get signed off, or did you keep if until you got your PPC?

      I got my medical early on and I had to go to a special medical examiner that you can find online through AOPA.com - Basically it’s just a physical it’s really no big deal and if you’re in good health you don’t need to worry about anything. I subscribe to M08 for about two months I kept on with the subscription while I was doing my flight training and it turned out to be really good. Plus I bought Jace and Shepherd’s book preparing for your check ride which really really help and it was worth the money. Thanks for watching!

    Does the 4 hours a day over a 3-week span of in-flight training give enough time for each lesson to "soak-in" before the next flight? Without experiencing it, I might think you could get 'information overload'.

      Yes and you have to be a little bit flexible because some days are going to get called because the weather and you’ll have a ground session as well and also there’s the weekends but if you do it full-time you just have to treat it like a job where your attention is on it about eight hours a day may be a little bit longer even if you’re only doing about for flight hours a day.     Thank you for the video. What is the best strategy to look for an instructor if I'm planning to take lessons in a different city? Like I'm in New York right now but want to do flying in Florida

      Just make sure that you get along with him very well and that you know your own learning style know where your weaknesses are as a learner know where your strengths are as learner and then ask that direct question of the Flight Instructor you’re interviewing. For me I got overwhelmed very easy and then I would get irritated, just like everybody else but once the instructor knew that he can kind of work around that and know it’s coming and then I could laugh about it and it made for a good experience. It’s just one example but an accurate assessment of your own learning styles and your learning ability both strengths and weaknesses is crucial so you can discuss that with the instructor. Whereabouts in Florida are you thinking of? If it’s in the Tampa Zephyrhills area I have a great instructor for you.

    Hey I am 59 years old and I start this 10 years back with 11 hours flight time, and I want to finish it. But the money is a big downside. Can I do it for almost nothing?

      You can get it done for about 6-7 k -- you have to do the research.... but you can do it !!!

    How can anyone say which ground school is "the best online ground school"? That's like saying this school or that school, this airplane or that airplane, etc is "the best". What's your objective criteria? Everyone is different and just because a particular school, program etc worked for you, doesn't necessarily mean it's "the best". Maybe you're getting a cut, kickback or a percentage. If that's the case you should be honest about that. If it's not the case, then you should also be honest about your bias.

      I learned a flying a Cessna 152 and then they started flying a Cessna 172 and then after I got my license I got into a partnership with a cardinal 177 and I really liked it and then I bought my own cardinal 177. Cardinal is a fantastic airplane I did do a video on five reasons to buy a Cessna cardinal and you should look at that video on my channel it really spells the whole thing out.
