- This San Francisco Tourist Guide provides everything you need to know to maximize your fun and time on the San Francisco Cable Cars so you can leave your heart in San Francisco. Hang on as we do the steep hills of San Francisco on this one of a kind adventure. Get the information you need to have the best journey possible.
It's important to plan ahead for this busy iconic San Francisco attraction. This video helps you to enjoy the cable car experience and all the beautiful scenic San Francisco places: Fishermans wharf, Lombard Street, China Town, Union Square, Embarcadero, Ferry Building, Nob hill and so much more.
There are 3 routes:
(1) The Powell - Hyde route to fisherman wharf (most popular)
(2) The Powell - Mason route to fisherman wharf
(3) The California Route to Nob Hill and Polk Street
The Hyde and Mason routes share the turn around at Market and Powell which is 2 blocks south of Union Square. The cable cars lines alternate loading. You stand in line and can wait at the front of the line if you prefer to take to the other location or if you want to wait for a front or running board position. Its an easy walk through fisherman's wharf to get between the Hyde and Masson fisherman wharf turn arounds. Only the Hyde and Powell locations have ticket booths but you can pay cash (in small bills) on the cable car or use the muni app. SFMTA.com/MuniMobile
The cable car museum is at 1201 Mason at Washington and Mason streets. The hyde and mason lines coming away from fisherman wharf both pass by the museum on their way to Union Square. Its about a 15 minute walk from the museum to Union Square.
To have the most fun talk with the cable car brake man or grip man and waive to people as you pass by. Most of the people on the cable cars are tourist so live it up.

Yes they have almost been discontinued 2 times. 1906 and in the 1960s

In Japan, there are several streetcars running through the city, but I have never seen a cable car running through the city, so it was a very interesting experience for me! 👍✨

Love how you started this video on the trolley! It's great to see all these people having fun! When we last went to San Fran the trolley was free!!! They were offering it free for a week or so to get back out of the pandemic closedown. These turnarounds are so cool to see! Good to know which side of the trolley to catch each way. So neat!! We love the trolleys in San Francisco and they are so practical with all the hills there! The last time we were in San Fran the trolleys weren’t running because of Covid. We will have to go again now that they are up and running.

Riding the Cable Cars in SF looks like lots of fun! Very exciting to stand up on the outside - I thought that was just done in the movies. Thanks for all the pro-tips. I would definitely get an all day pass. Do locals use the Cable Cars or is it mostly used by tourists now? Looks super handy to reach some famous spots! Thanks! 👌👍👍
Locals mostly take the California line using a monthly passes so they don't pay the steep price and that line also has less crowds and goes to more of a residential area. Thanks for the visit. I felt like I was in a movie but wait, I was!

Nice video. I actually visited San Francisco once before and was able to see their streetcar system. But I never managed to see their cable cars. This was fabulous these trams are so iconic to San Francisco but we learnt things we did not know from this awesome video and you even got to ring the bell 🔔 great tips for people planning on visiting! Seeing the workings and learning they go at a constant 9mph was interesting! Awesome video Mike! We had a day in San Francisco, we took the BART from half moon bay into the city, it was a great day and experience but we got ripped off by someone dressed as a monk so it left a sour note but we loved the old arcades on the pier and got some nice photos! Cable Cars are the best, did you know that Melbourne had Cable Cars until 1940 when the last Cable Car was removed and all the routes were electrified for trams. I always have been fascinated with these little Cable Cars. It was your Cable Cars that inspired Melbourne to have Cable Cars. It is sad that we did not keep at least one route as historical and tourist purposes. Great vlog. 🙏🏼❤❤❤

Fabulous! Reminds me of a road trip we did with the kids in 1997, and we visited San Francisco. We actually stayed in Vallejo and rode a ferry to Pier 41. I was driving north up to San Fran (from San Jose) and missed the turnoff, ended up driving over the bay to Oakland - no GPS back then - Lol.
