    Hi Everyone! What are your biggest issues when putting together your resume?

    • @ljaye8335
      @ljaye8335 7 лет назад +4

      Hello Andy, Can you share your thoughts about whether or not you want a prospecting employer contacting the current employer. I know they have to confirm that you worked there but if you don't want the employer (i.e. supervisor/manager) to know you are seeking other opportunities. I've heard both sides and want to settle this within myself.

    • @ljaye8335
      @ljaye8335 7 лет назад +6

      I find your information very useful since I haven't really looked at my resume in a decade and I now want to change careers and I have no experience in the industry that I am now seeking. How can I best address that through my resume? I know that my previous skills are transferable but just want to best address that in the resume as well as he cover letter.

    • @andylacivita
      @andylacivita  7 лет назад +11

      L. that's a great question. a prospecting employer should NOT contact a current employer until you've agreed to work for the prospect, signed you acceptance/employment letter, and given them permission to do a background check. If they call your current (soon to be former employer), the employer should give very little information on you other than you work/worked there.

    No word of a lie, I switched my resume to this format and applied to a company I have been applying to for the past two years with zero luck. I submitted my resume to them again last night after following this video and woke up to an email from them requesting to schedule an interview. THIS ACTUALLY WORKS GUYS!
    Now time to watch your interview tips and prep.

    Hey Andrew,
    I just wanted to thank you for putting this content out. I watched hours and hours of your content and applied much of your resume template to my own.
    During the interview I asked the key question, “What would success look like for me a year from now, if this works out and I am the candidate you are looking for.”
    It was a panel interview and I could tell my prospective new manager really liked the question.
    At the close I thanked them for their time and told them “I want to make this work.” I repeated that I had done a lot of research on their website and explained how their 4 key cultural pillars exactly aligned with my personal standards and the way I seek to conduct myself as a professional.
    They came back with an offer the next day and it was an outstanding offer! Thank you so much for equipping me to meet this challenge and better my life and my growing family’s life. Thank you thank you thank you!!

    The biggest issues with my resume was having no idea how to format it and make my job duties stand out. Thanks to your help with my resume, along with your thank you note sample and top 5 questions to ask the interviewer I was offered the position I wanted even though I failed the technical interview which caught me completely off guard - but they were so impressed with everything else they decided that they will train me on the coding aspects of the job. Thanks again.

    Thank you so much for this. I'm freshly out of the military, and my resume I felt was sub-par. I stumbled across this video and used the templates to help rewire mine. I pulled a little bit of a tricky move, that way I applied online, but went in the next day with my resume and said it wouldn't load for some reason, which allowed me face time with the hiring authority and showed I had confidence. As we all know that's huge in the retail world. I got the job and I think I can credit that to you and your videos. Thank you so much again.

    Andrew, I haven’t even started my new resume yet but had to stop and say you are the REAL DEAL and wish I could have someone like you managing my career. I’ve watched and read as many of these videos, books, podcast, etc. as you have resumes and this entire process has gone to the dogs you were speaking about. What happened to KISS? I agree with everything you are saying, use common sense and put yourself behind the desk. Ask yourself what you would want to see and go from there. Thanks for the latest tips and refreshers.

    Hi Andrew,
    I'm student of professional Qualification ACCA with 9 papers completed out of 14.
    How I represent this on my resume ?

    • @andylacivita
      @andylacivita  7 лет назад +4

      Usman Ayyaz Hey Usman, that's fantastic that you are moving through that accreditation. I might add that in the educational section or create an additional section call accounting accreditations. You can include you've completed the 9 with 5 remaining. If you think it's helpful to include the names of the stages, out those in. Just be careful you don't make the resume too long. But, I love that you're including that. It's important to note!

    Hi Andrew, I got few questions;
    1) Should I send the resume as a word document or as a pdf.?
    2) I'm an entry level job seeker, with only part time work experience which are not directly related to my field. Do you still think I should put employment info before education?
    Please let me know. Thanks!

      You can put your education at the top if you are a recent college graduate. If you've been working a little bit, put the education below the work experience. I'm guessing your resume will only be 1 page, so it should be okay.

    THANK YOU! Finally an advice I can relate to - and will gladly use. Furthermore - 1 CV makes sense and really should be enough as there is only one you, with the experience you had. I find it really draining to adapt CV to each and every job, and create totally new cover letter for each too. Why haven't we arrived yet to a new set up where cover letters are not needed anymore - and CV (i.e. single document) does the talk? How come we are in 21st century - and have to negotiate so many various hoops to apply for jobs? Just apply, nevermind get.
    All while from collective experience - my own and my friends - quite often job offer comes from the first contact, mental 'scan', the energy, the fact that employer/recruiter felt a connection with you, liked you for any or for no reason - despite the fact that you actually lacked some skill or knowledge, or experience. Some attribute such luck to - well - luck; some - to Attraction Law they practice, some to coincidence - but it does happen.
    Alas to get that chance of deserved recognition or luck one has to be chosen for an interview first.
    I am really thriled to have found your videos and the Academy - may save £250 for personalised CV and cover letter service someone offered me recently...

      YOU'RE WELCOME and you're dead right!!! Thanks too for the nice remarks about the videos. By the way, I'm not sure if you subscribe to my tips for work and life blog, but there are loads of additional FREE resources there too. Just go to www.andrewlacivita.com and you can sign up there. Next month, I'll be doing an in depth webinar on resume writing and if you're on the list, you'll be notified!!!! And don't ever pay to have someone do YOUR resume. You'll spend a ton of time explaining yourself to them, won't like what they draft, and have to spend additional time rewriting a significant amount of it. No one knows you as well as you. Once you figure out the format and structure, it's much easier for you to write your own!!!

    Thank you for your advice Andrew. I had already sensed some of the things you point out in the video, others are new to me.
    Now, let me ask two questions:
    1) What if you have worked for small organizations but would like to enter a large one?
    2) How to tune your cv when you have experience in one field (for me marketing communication) but would like to change sector (product marketing or trade marketing), and you have studied in order to get the competences needed for that?

    • @andylacivita
      @andylacivita  7 лет назад

      Hi Marta! On your first point, you can make some of your items in your Career Profile and Career Highlights section related to areas a larger company might find attractive. For example, if you've worked for smaller organizations, have you designed and implemented processes and procedures your company used? Are you organized and so forth? These are just a few examples, but I would review the job descriptions for the larger organizations and simply pull forward some of the alignments. On your second question, check the answer I left Maryann Hack (right above yours) as a start. I would also highlight the CAPABILITIES required for product or trade marketing. Those transferrable skills you gained in MarComm that would also apply. Make your career profile and highlights sections show those capabilities. Lastly, I would mention that in your cover letter as well!!!

    Thanks for the advice! I have been watching some of your videos and find the helpful so I subscribed to your channel. One thing I noticed is that where I am from (Mexico) most interviews and screening processes are either completely informal or automated. By teelling you this I want to know your opinion on how important is to have a great recommendation/ contact to get an interview for an entry level position vs having a good resume/cover letter

    • @andylacivita
      @andylacivita  7 лет назад

      Iñigo Portilla that is a fantastic question. I think it's important for you to adjust to the culture you're in. I think you can still have very professional looking cover letters and recommendations but also keep them casual in a sense. I would definitely defer to your knowledge of your culture and country.

    Thank you very much for such great content! I have a question, can I mention a list of (automation) tools and software in the core competencies section? If no, where would you recommend to place it, as I don’t want to write them at job duties descriptions because then I need to add verbs to them which will take space, and again mostly I want to mention them for ATS.
