I just happened upon your video and am so glad I did. Your instructions are wonderful and are inspiring me to get started with chalk paint. The finished cabinet is beautiful! Your fabric store looks outstanding. Yes, I'm a new subscriber, too. ; )
I just also happened upon your video. LOVE IT! I have a beat-up credenza that was once beautiful (maybe from 40's) that I just purchased for $50 and is in much need of TLC. YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME TO PAINT IT. I am nervous! 😬😁 but I have your video! Now I just need Annie Sloan paint!❣
You did a great job explaining everything. I’ve been painting furniture for about 2 years with chalk paint so I have a few tips to help anyone that wants to try this. 1. Use shellac to prime- this will help you save paint and prevent wood staining from showing through the final coat. 2. After the first coat, you can thin out the paint ( In a separate tub - use one of those Chinese soup containers with a small amount of paint and water) to help extend the dry time and for smoother coverage. I would also recommend brushing all in one direction using the flow of the wood grain 3. If you have a high traffic surface I would also recommend using lacquer to prevent chipping and scratches. The lacquer is also easier to clean and you won’t have to reapply every 6 months like you do with wax.
Thanks for making a really helpful video. I think that you have given me the courage to try it myself. And you have a lovely quilt shop. I sure wish I lived closer.
I have used Anne Sloan, and Rustoleum brand, and I get the same effect with the Rustoleum, and I save money. Thanks for sharing your project, it turned out beautifully. 😊
@@deemoe494 Frenchic paint is the easiest to use out of them all... I used to use Annie Sloane and then tried Rustoleum. But for me Frenchic tops all of them!..
Great tutorial. Most of the ones I've seen with chalk paint have a distressed finish or finish with dark wax and that's not a look I like. Loved seeing that you can get a full coverage with the chalk paint and smooth finish with the wax. The number of coats and how much paint was used was helpful info, too.
I also came upon your video just per chance and exactly at the right moment for me! I have a cupboard that I wanted to paint bright white and since I have never painted before, I was a bit hesitant to get started. But your tutorial was wonderful, just what I needed. Thanks!
The spot is called bleed through and you should spray shellack on top before you apply another coat of paint. I clean all my pieces with a TSP cleaner mixed with water and this was suggested by my Annie Sloan dealer. That will help remover any spray furniture polish and build in dirt. I pour my paint into another container with a good sealing top. I love glass bowls the rubber lids. After the first coat, I mix my Annie Sloan paint with a bit of water, makes for a much smoother coat, really helps with brush strokes. I have never had to put more than 2 coats with small touch ups in some places.

For a really smooth finish, lightly sand with a fine (400grit) sandpaper and you will end up with a silky smooth surface which feels lovely. You can also slightly dilute the top coat so that it creates less brush marks. If you have some brown discolouration leaching through your paint, you should have primed the piece with a blocking primer such as Zinzer. Stained wood will always leach through light paint and some pieces of furniture may have stains which can only be blocked by priming.
I am so glad I saw your comment! I am having issues with stains and brush marks and your comment is the first one that has helped me! Thank you! It's my first go at chalk paint so I am learning!
I also heard to dilute the paint with a little water and to use 200 grit sandpaper. You might have to apply multiple coats the thinner the paint is diluted. You can also lightly sand in between coats if you want.
Just found this ... thanks so much for a complete run through of this amazing transformation. Given me the confidence to go ahead a try my own transformation of an old nest of tables ... Take care everyone 😉

After my final coat is dry, I lightly hand-sand with 400 grit. Makes the surface ultra silky and smooth. Beautiful cabinet!🌸 Good to use a primer before painting to avoid bleed-through.
I use KILZ®️ or Zinsser®️ All-Purpose primer. A roller is fine, but I prefer a brush. It’s whatever is your choice. A roller makes the job go quicker!😊

New subscriber. I too, happened on to your video. Bought Annie Sloan paint/brushes today. Excited about my rocking chair project! Your instructions are great.
This actually sits in our shop! If you look through our photos on our facebook page there is a full shot of the front room from March 2020 with this in there! It has a little wear on the top from displays and boxes being slid on top. But otherwise it is holding up beautifully!
Just a thought - I think it would be really good to use 1 coat of primer (like Zinsser BIN - Water Based) - that would cover and seal and provide a fairly solid white base. Then you can do the Chalk paint coat. I think foam roller would be good too for smoother coverage. Then cover with a top coats (x2 or x3) with sanding between.
Thank you! I bought the buffing brush at a local store that is no longer in business. Unfortunately there are no identifying marks on the buffing brush to help me source it from somewhere else.
The discoloration is tannin from the wood. Please don't keep painting over it. Spray it with shellac or a clear coat let it totally dry and then paint over it. Also when your paint is not totally dry and you paint another coat over it you are pulling off the undercoat and working harder. Let it dry first. Always paint in the direction of the grain.
Annie Sloan herself says just slap it on going any old direction. Watch her painting videos. The shellac tip is good one though. It works over gel stain too, to prevent stain lift when putting a brushed on top coat over the stain.
@@kimcox66030 Is this just an issue with painting lighter colors onto darker pieces? I was thinking last night adding my second coat that perhaps I should have sanded first as the wood and stain were darker. I also had to use wood putty in one spot. I am thinking of sanding it all and using a darker tan color and not the light grey. And then use the spray water on the top layer. I will learn eventually. :-)
Thanks so much for all of your advice - Never seen or used a brush to buff up the surface on my projects before ! Thanks for the great tip it the end result looks amazing! 🌹

Looks very pretty. But I bought me a can of Rust-Oleum linen white for $13. And I only had to use two coats on my curio cabinet tables Etc, and I still have a lot of paint leftover and the coverage and the work is gorgeous. So I painted a lot of furniture for 13 bucks.
Excellent tutorial. I feel ready now to start my dining room table legs and chair set. Love your shop, well merchandised from what I can see. Thanks! Grace
Great job! Another way to buff is use steel wool. I believe it's 0000 that works the best. Buff with lint free cloth and then use the steel wool. I have done many pieces and they come out so smooth.
I do it all the time with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and Annie Sloan Clear Wax. It does not ruin the color of the finish. I have several pieces of furniture that I have used this method on and they are as white as white can be.
This was inspiring...I want to do an entire built in wall cabinet. 🤔😥😭 I am so scared to do this but the wood wall is just so depressing. I want a fresh new look. 😁
I worked on antiques that were up to nearly 400 years old and have a couple pieces in museums, so not much of what I do will work with this kind of stuff. But, try soaking hardware in amonia for 10-20 minutes and rub with 0000 steel wool if it is brass. Also try washing the furniture with the same steel wool and Soilmax(used to be Soilax) and it will work way better than just water and doesn't need to be rinsed off. Lastly, never try to fix or refinish an actual antique as it will ruin it and drop it's value a lot. This is not a real "antique" since it is a mass production piece likely from the 50's or there abouts. But some antique furniture can be worth thousands or even millions and if you damage the original finish or even original glue it can drop the value 50% or more and to have a professional fix a damaged piece that has had it's original finish damaged can cost a few thousand dollars and still not bring back the full value.
Thank you for clarifying that this is not a real antique. So many people get super upset when I paint these, but just because it was made last century doesn’t make it valuable. I love it the way it is, and that is all that matter!
I can't say what exactly makes an antique, but mass produced and machined pieces like this don't normally make the cut for me. I think once you hit the Art Deco period(which doesn't meet my standard stated earlier) I start to view things as an antique, but that is probably because it is my favorite furniture personally. I have had the privilege of seeing some amazing pieces from private collections and you haven't lived until you have sat in a $1 million chair from 1670's made in Italy with hand made mahogany veneer. I was terrified as it was one of the first pieces I got to work on as the lead.
Robert M, do you have a RUclips channel or Twitter or a Website? Clearly your mindset is akin to mine and I’d love to follow someone with your knowhow and know “what”! Look forward to a reply. Thanks!
The beauty of the Annie Sloan paint is that it goes on any surface. I have just thought it would be a much better idea to prime dark wooden surfaces first with a cheap white paint so that you need less coats of the more expensive chalk paint.
You should get a cheap little air compressor with a blower tip to clean out the inside real good. It'll blow out any debris from spaces that you wouldnt be able to get to
Hi Lisa! Here is a link to all the brushes used in this video: Annie Sloan Flat Brush Annie Sloan Pure Bristle Brush: amzn.to/2CeJcAQ Annie Sloan Wax Brush
Yes-- dilute your second coat. But don't dilute your can of paint. POur the required amount into another small container (like dollar tree food containers) THEN add water - a teaspoon at a time until you get a good consistency. THen clear wax. IF you are using dark was, make sure to put clear wax on first then you can do the dark wax and then wipe it off. IF you have too much dark wax on your piece, rub a little clear wax to use as an 'eraser' then wipe it off again
Semi gloss white paint. And I just clean it with tsp, prime with kilz and then cover with two coats of semi gloss. You’ll want to fill any nail holes and caulk any seams in between the priming and the paint.
Quilt Addicts Anonymous thank you for your feedback. One final question - is there anything you do to the wood prior to the kilz to get the primer to stick to the existing poly on the trim?
if you use bullseye shallack prior to painting you won't get stains coming through the paint or yellowing as it seals those in..You can get the spray shallack couple coats does the trick especially when you are using WHITE or a light color, just a FYI
Great job! Question is this piece all wood or laminate because you didn’t sand it? I’m a beginner in doing chalk paint. And the dresser that I’m going to work on a laminate. Any suggestions??
This cabinet turned out beautifully, but I do think you could have gotten away with less coats if you would paint all in one direction. With painting in any direction, spots are being missed as shown on camera with dry spots. If it takes 4 coats to cover every project, this would get really expensive if one had a big hutch or something else of that size. I've seen great reviews of Annie Sloan paint, but I think it's too expensive for most. I, personally, don't think there's any reason for that paint to be so highly priced when we can make our own just as well!
Annie Sloan herself recommends that you go in various directions when applying. I do that for the first coat, but follow the direction of the wood on the next coat.
tegma - I agree - Always paint in one direction - When you go back and forth you keep picking up paint on your brush - I also think four coats is overkill - Annie Sloan is expensive - I am a skeptic and think Annie advises painting in a different direction because it will take more coats to cover - Vendors give their products to people who make videos so they will try them and recommend them - My sister is an artist and receives many free products - I don't think anyone would recommend an inferior product, but be aware she is really promoting Annie Sloan - Yes, Annie's paints do a good job, but remember someone is paying for Annie's advertising and you can make your own and save a lot of money (Check out other videos) - If you are doing one small job and want to use Annie that is fine, but you may end up with paint left over you may never use - Count how many times she says Annie Sloan in this video - She did a good job, but you could do the same thing for much less money
She specifically said she isn't a stockist nor did she get the product for free. She does have affiliate links which is a negligible commission and Annie's products aren't supposed to be sold on Amazon. I use chalk paints and Annie Sloan is one of the best. I have an American made clay paint coming but the price is close to the same and I have't used it yet so I can't say how it compares. We are partially paying for EU regulations and export tariffs. It cost a lot less in the UK. Chalk means matte in Britain so this isn't just made with plaster of paris.. The chalk paint you make is nothing like Annie Sloan. I pay full price for everything i purchase. The stockists mark up isn't even half. I think maybe 40% so those who sell Annie's products believe in them. It isn't the most profitable line to sell and they can lose their license to sell it if they sell on Amazon or even mark it down below MSRP. The vendor contract is quite strict. RUclipsrs are required to state whether or not their compensated or reviewing the product because it was supplied by the manufacturer. Again there can be consequences for not complying..
Not sure if you knew but this sewing cabinet has a sliding top that turns into a lowered section when the sewing machine is raised. You have to use the lever on the side while pulling up and sliding the front top piece over.
The brush Stephanie used in the video was purchased at a local store that is no longer in business. She does however also use and LOVE the Annie Sloan brushes!
Hey Stephanie. thank you very much for the video. Can I apply the same process going straight to a teal or pink color or I'd have to paint white first to then change to a different color?

Thanks!
Best DIY I’ve seen. U r good
This video is super helpful. Thank you!
The beauty of the Annie Sloan paint is that it goes on any surface. I have just thought it would be a much better idea to prime dark wooden surfaces first with a cheap white paint so that you need less coats of the more expensive chalk paint.
But then Annie wouldn’t be making all that money from you. 😂
LOVE IT..Thank you for Sharing.
You’re welcome!
What can I do not to have the brush strokes, I like it very smooth🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
And is there a high gloss, I would like that.
I am new to your channel. I love the way you explain how to do the job, and what to expect. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome!
Looks great....would have used a vacuum to remove dust inside. Would have used a foam roller for smother coverage. Enjoyed the make over.
You should get a cheap little air compressor with a blower tip to clean out the inside real good. It'll blow out any debris from spaces that you wouldnt be able to get to
Wonderful tutorial!! Thanks so much!!
You’re welcome!
Dear Annie, Do you have any video of a black painted item that you painted in light color and a distressed style? Thank You
What kind of brush was that you used to buff it? It looks amazing 👏
Hi Lisa! Here is a link to all the brushes used in this video: Annie Sloan Flat Brush
Annie Sloan Pure Bristle Brush: amzn.to/2CeJcAQ
Annie Sloan Wax Brush
Yes-- dilute your second coat. But don't dilute your can of paint. POur the required amount into another small container (like dollar tree food containers) THEN add water - a teaspoon at a time until you get a good consistency. THen clear wax. IF you are using dark was, make sure to put clear wax on first then you can do the dark wax and then wipe it off. IF you have too much dark wax on your piece, rub a little clear wax to use as an 'eraser' then wipe it off again
Nice job!
Is this a good way to convert window and door trim from a red oak to white? Will it hold up?
For trim I use semi gloss and kilz primer. That way it is easier to clean.
Quilt Addicts Anonymous semi gloss poly?
Quilt Addicts Anonymous does it hold up? I’m wondering if there’s an easy way to do it without needing to prep the wood too much.
Semi gloss white paint. And I just clean it with tsp, prime with kilz and then cover with two coats of semi gloss. You’ll want to fill any nail holes and caulk any seams in between the priming and the paint.
Quilt Addicts Anonymous thank you for your feedback. One final question - is there anything you do to the wood prior to the kilz to get the primer to stick to the existing poly on the trim?
great tutorial, thanks so much.... you didn't list your buffing brush in your list of materials, What brush are you using for buffing?
Can you use this technique to paint slightly glossy varnished wood?
You can paint any wood with chalk paint
Thank you so much! I'm so excited to try this!
nice finish. would you also suggest using a roller brush to avoid the appearance of brush strokes?
I have never used a roller with chalk paint, and the only time I have seen it used is to do a stencil, so I'm not sure how it would turn out.
if you use bullseye shallack prior to painting you won't get stains coming through the paint or yellowing as it seals those in..You can get the spray shallack couple coats does the trick especially when you are using WHITE or a light color, just a FYI
To stop bleed-throughs or stains from popping up try using shellac before you paint.
How long should you wait to do second coat of wax after first coat ?
do you have to buff with ANY color? and where can i buy a buffing brush like that? please; thank you!
Great job! Question is this piece all wood or laminate because you didn’t sand it? I’m a beginner in doing chalk paint. And the dresser that I’m going to work on a laminate. Any suggestions??
Maybe a light sanding just to give the paint something to grab onto.
Very helpful, thank you. Looks great! x
Me, too. All that moving back and forth is a BAD Habit and gives a sloppier job no matter how good the paint.
That's why you use a spray gun😎
tegma - I agree - Always paint in one direction - When you go back and forth you keep picking up paint on your brush - I also think four coats is overkill - Annie Sloan is expensive - I am a skeptic and think Annie advises painting in a different direction because it will take more coats to cover - Vendors give their products to people who make videos so they will try them and recommend them - My sister is an artist and receives many free products - I don't think anyone would recommend an inferior product, but be aware she is really promoting Annie Sloan - Yes, Annie's paints do a good job, but remember someone is paying for Annie's advertising and you can make your own and save a lot of money (Check out other videos) - If you are doing one small job and want to use Annie that is fine, but you may end up with paint left over you may never use - Count how many times she says Annie Sloan in this video - She did a good job, but you could do the same thing for much less money
Did you clear wax the entire sewing table
or just the top? Thank you
You want to use it on the entire painted surface. :)
I love your videos!
Thanks so much! Hopefully it inspired you to make something.
Can you thin chalk paint down with water and use it thru paint sprayer ?
You can use it in a sprayer, but I haven’t tried it.
@@QuiltAddictsAnonymous thanks for quick reply 👍
I love it!.. following you now!
Thank you for the video 💕
Beautiful! I want do learn how to quilt, too. Cute shop!
Make sure you subscribe! We are releasing a big beginner quilting series very soon!
Not sure if you knew but this sewing cabinet has a sliding top that turns into a lowered section when the sewing machine is raised. You have to use the lever on the side while pulling up and sliding the front top piece over.
What is the scrub brush you are using to spread the wax, please? Is it a Tampico? Can you share the name? Thank you.
The brush Stephanie used in the video was purchased at a local store that is no longer in business. She does however also use and LOVE the Annie Sloan brushes!
Hey Stephanie. thank you very much for the video. Can I apply the same process going straight to a teal or pink color or I'd have to paint white first to then change to a different color?
why can't you use a roller? Where do you get this paint?
