This version shows the Maestro as both the gentleman and the magician he was. He appears gentlemanly because to let Sumi shine in the coloratura of Maria's part, he did not modulate the duet key down to his range (the role of Tony is in the lyric tenor fach with plenty of high C's -- a note that the Maestro explained in interviews he didn't sing). Then he works musical magic by singing harmonics below the high C's in the score and singing them so convincingly that they sound original. Since Tony is a role that he could never sing on stage, we can forgive him if he is not as familiar with the text as he might otherwise be. R.I.P. Maestro, your generosity as an artist and your suave delivery are sorely missed.

Perhaps the person who posted that Hvorostovsky shows a "lack of professionalism" in this interpretation never saw the original Broadway production of West Side Story. In that version, "Tonight" was sung at least three times -- once as a quartet with Tony, Maria, Bernardo and Anita and two times as a duet for Tony and Maria. Both the duets were very romantic and one was set in Maria's bedroom. In the bedroom scene Carol Lawrence was wearing only a slip (daring for Broadway in the 50's) and Larry Kert was shirtless with a bare torso. Berstein's and Robbins' intent was clearly for this modern Romeo and Juliet to be affectionate with each other. If just a show of affection is not acceptable to some members of the audience, I wonder what those audience members would have said if Hvorostovsky and Jo had set up a bed on the stage and entered dressed as in the original!
I wonder about god. Dmitri had so much more singing to do and he was so excellent at it. We needed about thirty years more of his singing. I feel cheated.

Sorry ! ! 私の下のコメントは間違いでした。Dimaがガランチャとduet したのは、リハールの歌でした。音域的にこのTonight で、彼がテナーに近い声を出すのは当然ですね。比べる方がおかしかったです。が、Dima が意識的に 太い声で絶唱するのではなく、ｽﾐｼﾞｮｰに合わせてソフトに歌っているのは本当でしょう！ 素晴らしい！ 二人のChemistry !!
