For what Warmoth charges they should be Plekking the neck and making sure their neck fits in their body. I’d expect to do “surgery” if I was spending $100 - not $600 😂

I ordered a bass body and neck from Warmoth. They are in production right now. I asked if they would fit together and was told they would since I ordered them together but they wouldn't really do any work on the fitment of assembly because they get in trouble for that.
Very nice, a real Custom Shop build. So many nice embellishments.The matching headstock just screams excess, I love it. I think that is what makes a guitar unique and personal.

Hey Christian, thank you for the compliment and comment. Perhaps you could go with the nice top and make a transparent guard that custom fits the specific areas your pic digs in, minimizing it's muting effect? I use a really big pic too, the Clayton triangle 1.52, but I've practiced to avoid that extra body gashing for pic control and accurate note selection. Sooner or later, my fingertips eat into the wood though, but heck, if we're not wearing out our guitars, we're not playing enough! Here's a clip from a recent gig, doing an old Peter Green tune. I'm playing an old 1984 Ibanez RG440, modified, Warmoth neck, etc, the Tele is on the stand behind me (in the Santa hat!). The mahogany has beautiful ribbon striped figure. I built my own Strat guitar body out of cypress and got a beautiful neck from Warmoth. It was almost perfectly quatersawn but had awesome curly maple with a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard with abalone inlays. I got the neck for around $150 but that was back in 1996 after graduating high school and went to work at my dads cabinet shop.

The only problem with using Fret EZ is that it contains silicone which goes right thru the finish into the wood making any future refinish work impossible unless you use straight silicone additive like autobody Jamb It which makes the finish more likely to flake off. I used to work in large factory repair dept.and my repair/ touch up booth was upstairs next to machine shop. Was spraying nitro on a repair and someone there sprayed silicone lubricant on a machine and it was fish eye city on the guitar top. Many years later working for fixture shop with spray booth and a new guy brought some silicone spray to work and my boss chased him out of the shop ! He was a guitar builder and somehow knew about this problem. It's nice that you are player Might visit if in area I am in OR.
Simply Beautiful results. But I agree with some other commenter is that for the price of the Warmoth parts they should be spect on perfect without having to do all that fidgeting and clearing the neck frets and releveling.
If you're a guitarist warmoth is the place to go for quality. I built my "go to guitar" 3 years ago and can't imagine playing something else. Go to RESCUE ROAD BAND and check it out. Wouldn't take all the money in the world for it

Need yearly maintainence tips/advice for my guitars. Usually I do the following to maintain/keep my guitars in good playing/looking position -Change strings every 2 months -Wash hands before and after playing -Wipe down the guitar with a microfibre cloth -Keep guitar in the hardshell case -adjust truss rod when neck moves during the seasons change I usually don't go crazy with oils/polish etc. What do you do to maintain and keep your guitars in good condition? what about the neck/fingerboard-especially for maple/rosewood fb? advice and suggestions appreciated.

@@TheEchelon Yeah but the Broadcaster design is SO considered, engineered I have a couple of custom teles and of course they have the body contours added but there is so LITTLE improvement you can make on the original design The big meaty neck makes for awesome sustain and the older vintage radius is great for chording : )
Hey Dave, That's a spectacular looking guitar. Thanks for sharing your process. I have a question regarding the bushing install. I've built two Warmoth Teles myself (I'm no luthier, just a DIY enthusiast and guitar nut) and I installed the bushings by using an old soldering iron with a pencil tip to heat the bushings in place until the lacquer softened enough for the bushings to seat snugly. I saw the technique recommended on several build blogs and forums. You opted to route out the holes instead. Is there a disadvantage to using the heat-and-press method that I'm not aware of? My next project will be a hardtail Strat and I don't want to keep using a potentially inferior technique if it could cause me grief. Thanks!
Hey Damon, thank you for watching. I use the heated parts for anchor extraction, and yes, many like installing that way, so you certainly can do that, but it also comes with a different set of risks: the bush not sitting quite right and skittering across the back leaving little melted puckers, or the rim setting too deep into the finish. But either will work. I like the clean out as I get a nice metal to wood contact and the rim sits cleanly on the finish surface. Being fallible, I try to take, for me, the path of least failure of my own limited skill set!
Break angle over the nut, no string trees, no tree hang up, no slipping on the post either. Note: some keys, like Sperzel 6 in line may be purchased in a staggered set, keys 1 & 2 very short, 3 & 4, a little taller, 5 & 6 normal, so a treeless headstock with break angle and no progressive wraps is possible, I just liked the Grovers for this build, they're not staggered. You gotta be kidding - is Warmorh using Gibson’s QA book now? LOL. For the money Warmoth charges you should NOT have to resize the pocket or do anything to that neck but bolt it on. $100 necks from China - maybe. But a $600 neck should be Plekked for crissake.
You get what you pay for, it's that simple. Warmth quality is still stunning. I'm still gigging on necks I purchased shortly after Warmth got started, and they're still stable and true. There are no Chinese builders at this level. Note: the body came from the Gallery page, the neck was made 6 weeks later to match, so the two parts never saw each other until they arrived in my shop. When I've ordered a neck and body together for the same project, they fit, but there may always be some lacquer thickness issue to be addressed when ordering separate parts. I'd much rather have to trim a bit and have a super snug fit than extra wiggle room.
This seems a bit unusual about the neck not fitting into the pocket, as I have built 3 Warmoth guitars and all of them were a perfect fit. If you go buy a Custom Shop Guitar it will set you back way more than a Warmoth, and the Warmoth products are absolutly beautiful quality and you can pick what ever exotic woods your heart desires:-) (very custom infact).
@@davetone2106 Somebody's fragile little ego is hurt. You drilled some holes, screwed in a few screws and did a setup, that's it. You are charging doctor prices for a service any competent person could perform.
No actually, Ideally you want a minimum of a 50 to 75% wrap around the post so the load bearing is on the large curve of the tuning shaft, not the sharp angle of the post string exit. As I am not using tree's, I also need break angle/downward force over the nut, so with several wraps I achieve that. Once the string is pulled taught it doesn't stretch out of tune. It didn't for me. I played four gigs and wasted this set and have zero tuning problems. I've had three different sets on and no tuning issues at all. Very stable. Hope that helps!
@@davetone2106 false tbh. Choosing not to use string trees have nothing to do on how a locking tuner is supposed to work. You can just get away with it on a tele cause you have a fixed bridge, but having multiple turns would render the locking tuners pretty much useless while dealing with a whammy bar, and i guess and hope you know it.

You are correct, multi wraps on a trem guitar with the Fender shallow headstock defeats the point, however, two or three wraps to get better break angle makes no difference on a stop tail. The lock post does secure the string from sliding out the opening and there is zero tree drag because there's no tree (no hangup from bends) . When using a trem system, however, I might reccomend a roller tree as they minimize any binding, though the Tusq versions from graphtech work quite well. Yes. There is a very good reason there are guitars that sell for $2000.00, $3000.00 and up by makers like G&L, PRS, the Fender Custom Shop, Anderson, and many others. When you play them, when you spend thousands of hours gigging and recording with them you know why. It is the details in the wood selection and treatment, finish and assembly fit that separate fair and average from great to outstanding. Believe it.

I get that & I also appreciate that the final guitar you have made is not only beautiful looking & sweet sounding, but it would also stand up very well against any of the brands you have mentioned! I meant no disrespect to your build quality or your ability as a luthier. I guess I just expected a $500+ neck to at least have been set up to minimum spec.
Well, here's the deal. Necks from all the providers; Allparts, Mighty Might, Chandler Warmth have frets pressed in with the ends milled reasonably smooth. Yes, you can just string it up and it will play. That is the minimal set up. At the $500 mark you are paying for Aged, kiln dried 5A flame or birds eye, glow in the dark side dot markers, abalone position markers, gloss amber tint, Gotoh dual action truss with side adjust, graphite nut with basic slots guided in, a quilt maple headstock veneer that matches the body with a purple burst finish. So, that's a lot even for a neck. But, like most ALL lacquered maple necks the frets are painted over, and it is left to the assembler as to how much detail you want to put into the treatment of those frets. For some, a very simple removal of the lacquer on top is enough, and good enough. I do the maximum detail by exposing the entire fret and total top mill buffed out with the jewelers rouge. Very few shops do that, but it makes a big difference in how low and clean the action can be set, and how beautifully smooth the notes bend across the wire. That's part of the detail that makes this a $3000 guitar that would sell for $2300 street.

I've never owned a Tele styled guitar, and the tone is so sweet and clear that I realize I may not be able to duplicate again what it does. That said, I have several compositional ideas where this would be just perfect and at some point I will sell so I can create a Wilkinson trem equipped version. I will be shopping for the next body and neck around December as currently the band CD recording/mastering and video projects have consumed my after hours time! This one will have a super cool unique Tele neck PU I don't think has ever been seen! Stay tuned!
180 for a fret level is grossly overpriced my local guitar tech does it way cheaper and my guitars play like butter it isn't very hard to do and takes less than a hour maybe a little longer but 180 is rip off
Your ignorance is apparent sir. Some levels with deep wear, that is not deep enough for a refret, but requiring a lot of grinding, and polished out with jewelers rogue and full set up takes 3 hours, Sure, anyone tech can do the cheap version you are getting. My work is better, and my customers can feel the difference and do pay me for the work. A one month + backlog, though unfortunate, is normal. I also have customers from all over N Cal, Alaska and a few ship me their guitars from the East Coast. But, good luck to you with your tech. I'm sure he is adequate for your needs.
Indeed, expensive. If you watch the video through, no, the frets still have lacquer on them and I have to remove it and level/polish. However, it is still less than1/2 the price of this Fender Custom Shop relic, a $3920.00 so again, it is the market, labor, quality of wood, assembly and perception of value. They say they don't do it because it's a step that should happen after the neck is installed, under tension with strings and then left for a day or so. I can see their point, but it work that many buyers aren't expecting to need to do. But the wood movement can change the height of the frets.

My dear friend, to ask me about videos is irrelevant and silly. I am 50 yrs old, been playing guitar since the age of 16. I have about 20 guitars now, 3 of them are Warmoth that I partially put together and the stuff that I didn't want to take a chance I had it finished by a guitar tech. I have sold and bought more than 50 guitars in my lifetime, and I have dealt with at least 8 guitar techs thru out the u.s. and by the way, I use to live in Sacramento. do you know a guy by the name of David Blackhurst? he built one of my guitars a while back and he used to work on my guitars while I lived in Sac. I know what goes on putting a guitar together and all the ins and outs, trust me, all I am saying is 600 bucks is on the high side, this job is more like $350 to 400 bucks at the most from guitar techs I dealt with, but hey you can ask for a 1000 , its cool with me , your not getting my business that's for sure :)
Well, J, I know Dave Blackhurst, great builder, nice guy too. We worked at Andy Penn's Drum & Guitar City together. Good to hear you're an avid guitarist, and have Warmoth guitars. I've been doing guitar tech work for over 40 years. What you are not grasping here is getting a neck and body from two unrelated orders - I received the body, then ordered a neck to match. Often Warmoth will insure a package the neck will fit the pocket - but that wasn't the case. So to trim the pocket took extra time. So did scribbing off and milling lacquered over frets, meticulously without scaring the finish. If you watched the video you would understand that. Building a basic rosewood tele is easy if you don't mill the fretwork, or have to fit a pocket, or shield the cavity with the good stuff. I spend a lot more time in the details than other techs, which is why I'm still in business 21 years later, my line is full 3+ weeks, and my customers come to me from Redding, Lake Tahoe, Bay Area, Fresno, Hawaii and Alaska. If you don't want to pay for that level of quality. No worries. I'm very happy to not help you. Cheers!
All that and at the end of the day if you ever want to sell that guitar its almost worthless. The resale value on non name brand guitars high quality or not is awful or it takes you months if not years to find someone to buy it for anything more than nothing. I could sell my 2017 US Fender Strat Pro for what I paid, I bought a mint used one so I didnt lose money buying a new one, in a month at most. With all this said if you never plan to sell or have to knowledge you will lose your a$$ on it then party on.
You've missed the point, making you clueless. Good for you. When you make a living on these things as I and my colleagues do, and have service over 15,000 instruments in my 42 year career, you may grasp why working players will go the distance, regardless of what the headstock does not say.
Serious players (of which I'm not) don't care about the headstock name. They care about finding a luthier/builder who can make them exactly what they need.
Sadly, at the end of the day, (or years down the road) what Brian Z stated is pretty much true. It's a beautiful guitar, put together with great craftsmanship. Still, it will always be viewed as a partscaster.

Hey Dave, That's a spectacular looking guitar. Thanks for sharing your process. I have a question regarding the bushing install. I've built two Warmoth Teles myself (I'm no luthier, just a DIY enthusiast and guitar nut) and I installed the bushings by using an old soldering iron with a pencil tip to heat the bushings in place until the lacquer softened enough for the bushings to seat snugly. I saw the technique recommended on several build blogs and forums. You opted to route out the holes instead. Is there a disadvantage to using the heat-and-press method that I'm not aware of? My next project will be a hardtail Strat and I don't want to keep using a potentially inferior technique if it could cause me grief. Thanks!
Hey Damon, thank you for watching. I use the heated parts for anchor extraction, and yes, many like installing that way, so you certainly can do that, but it also comes with a different set of risks: the bush not sitting quite right and skittering across the back leaving little melted puckers, or the rim setting too deep into the finish. But either will work. I like the clean out as I get a nice metal to wood contact and the rim sits cleanly on the finish surface. Being fallible, I try to take, for me, the path of least failure of my own limited skill set!
The whole point of locking keys is so you dont have 10 string winds ... wonder why he wrapped the strings so much?
Break angle over the nut, no string trees, no tree hang up, no slipping on the post either.
Note: some keys, like Sperzel 6 in line may be purchased in a staggered set, keys 1 & 2 very short, 3 & 4, a little taller, 5 & 6 normal, so a treeless headstock with break angle and no progressive wraps is possible, I just liked the Grovers for this build, they're not staggered. You gotta be kidding - is Warmorh using Gibson’s QA book now? LOL. For the money Warmoth charges you should NOT have to resize the pocket or do anything to that neck but bolt it on. $100 necks from China - maybe. But a $600 neck should be Plekked for crissake.
You get what you pay for, it's that simple. Warmth quality is still stunning. I'm still gigging on necks I purchased shortly after Warmth got started, and they're still stable and true. There are no Chinese builders at this level. Note: the body came from the Gallery page, the neck was made 6 weeks later to match, so the two parts never saw each other until they arrived in my shop. When I've ordered a neck and body together for the same project, they fit, but there may always be some lacquer thickness issue to be addressed when ordering separate parts. I'd much rather have to trim a bit and have a super snug fit than extra wiggle room.
Agreed. Warmoth is way too expensive to be making a neck that doesn't fit the body they sold along with it.
This seems a bit unusual about the neck not fitting into the pocket, as I have built 3 Warmoth guitars and all of them were a perfect fit. If you go buy a Custom Shop Guitar it will set you back way more than a Warmoth, and the Warmoth products are absolutly beautiful quality and you can pick what ever exotic woods your heart desires:-) (very custom infact).

No actually, Ideally you want a minimum of a 50 to 75% wrap around the post so the load bearing is on the large curve of the tuning shaft, not the sharp angle of the post string exit. As I am not
using tree's, I also need break angle/downward force over the nut, so with several wraps I achieve that. Once the string is pulled taught it doesn't stretch out of tune. It didn't for me.
I played four gigs and wasted this set and have zero tuning problems. I've had three different sets on and no tuning issues at all. Very stable. Hope that helps!
@@davetone2106 false tbh. Choosing not to use string trees have nothing to do on how a locking tuner is supposed to work. You can just get away with it on a tele cause you have a fixed bridge, but having multiple turns would render the locking tuners pretty much useless while dealing with a whammy bar, and i guess and hope you know it.
@@valebliz Well, sort of. You are correct, multi wraps on a trem guitar with the Fender shallow headstock defeats the point, however, two or three wraps to get better break angle makes no difference on a stop tail. The lock post does secure the string from sliding out the opening and there is zero tree drag because there's no tree (no hangup from bends) . When using a trem system, however, I might reccomend a roller tree as they minimize any binding, though the Tusq versions from graphtech work quite well. Yes. There is a very good reason there are guitars that sell for $2000.00, $3000.00 and up by makers like G&L, PRS, the Fender Custom Shop, Anderson, and many others. When you play them, when you spend thousands of hours gigging and recording with them you know why. It is the details in the wood selection and treatment, finish and assembly fit that separate fair and average from great to outstanding. Believe it.
Dave Tone..... I get that & I also appreciate that the final guitar you have made is not only beautiful looking & sweet sounding, but it would also stand up very well against any of the brands you have mentioned! I meant no disrespect to your build quality or your ability as a luthier. I guess I just expected a $500+ neck to at least have been set up to minimum spec.
Well, here's the deal. Necks from all the providers; Allparts, Mighty Might, Chandler Warmth have frets pressed in with the ends milled reasonably smooth. Yes, you can just string it up and it will play. That is the minimal set up. At the $500 mark you are paying for Aged, kiln dried 5A flame or birds eye, glow in the dark side dot markers, abalone position markers, gloss amber tint, Gotoh dual action truss with side adjust, graphite nut with basic slots guided in, a quilt maple headstock veneer that matches the body with a purple burst finish. So, that's a lot even for a neck. But, like most ALL lacquered maple necks the frets are painted over, and it is left to the assembler as to how much detail you want to put into the treatment of those frets.
For some, a very simple removal of the lacquer on top is enough, and good enough. I do the maximum detail by exposing the entire fret and total top mill buffed out with the jewelers rouge. Very few shops do that, but it makes a big difference in how low and clean the action can be set, and how beautifully smooth the notes bend across the wire. That's part of the detail that makes this a $3000 guitar that would sell for $2300 street.

Great observations! And, thank you for watching and sharing your kind words. I must keep it! I've never owned a Tele styled guitar, and the tone is so sweet and clear that I realize I may not be able to duplicate again what it does.
That said, I have several compositional ideas where this would be just perfect and at some point I will sell so I can create a Wilkinson trem equipped version.
I will be shopping for the next body and neck around December as currently the band CD recording/mastering and video projects have consumed my after hours time!
This one will have a super cool unique Tele neck PU I don't think has ever been seen! Stay tuned!
180 for a fret level is grossly overpriced my local guitar tech does it way cheaper and my guitars play like butter it isn't very hard to do and takes less than a hour maybe a little longer but 180 is rip off
Your ignorance is apparent sir. Some levels with deep wear, that is not deep enough for a refret, but requiring a lot of grinding, and polished out with jewelers rogue and full set up takes 3 hours, Sure, anyone tech can do the cheap version you are getting. My work is better, and my customers can feel the difference and do pay me for the work. A one month + backlog, though unfortunate, is normal. I also have customers from all over N Cal, Alaska and a few ship me their guitars from the East Coast. But, good luck to you with your tech. I'm sure he is adequate for your needs.
my local tech will do a refret for around 200 dollars a little more on maple so 180 for fret dressing is ridiculous thank god your not my tech

Indeed, expensive. If you watch the video through, no, the frets still have lacquer on them and I have to remove it and level/polish. However, it is still less than1/2 the price of this Fender Custom Shop relic, a $3920.00 so again, it is the market, labor, quality of wood, assembly and perception of value. At Sweetwater.com

Warmoth should have leveled the frets themselves IMHO
They say they don't do it because it's a step that should happen after the neck is installed, under tension with strings and then left for a day or so. I can see their point, but it work that many buyers aren't expecting to need to do. But the wood movement can change the height of the frets.

Apparenky you haven't played on one. I also gig, nearly every weekend, and have recorded over a dozen albums of my own and for other local artists. As I fix guitars for a living, have for 45 years, I've had a few Tele's in my hands. This is the best playing, best sound version I've ever had the pleasure to play. So, sixstringzomby, your opinion in this regard is valuless to me and anyone else here.

So, S Jay, with no videos yourself, what business are you in? Have you ever built exactly this type of guitar? Have you played one of my builds? If not, are you out of your mind?
My dear friend, to ask me about videos is irrelevant and silly. I am 50 yrs old, been playing guitar since the age of 16. I have about 20 guitars now, 3 of them are Warmoth that I partially put together and the stuff that I didn't want to take a chance I had it finished by a guitar tech. I have sold and bought more than 50 guitars in my lifetime, and I have dealt with at least 8 guitar techs thru out the u.s. and by the way, I use to live in Sacramento. do you know a guy by the name of David Blackhurst? he built one of my guitars a while back and he used to work on my guitars while I lived in Sac. I know what goes on putting a guitar together and all the ins and outs, trust me, all I am saying is 600 bucks is on the high side, this job is more like $350 to 400 bucks at the most from guitar techs I dealt with, but hey you can ask for a 1000 , its cool with me , your not getting my business that's for sure :)
Well, J, I know Dave Blackhurst, great builder, nice guy too. We worked at Andy Penn's Drum & Guitar City together. Good to hear you're an avid guitarist, and have Warmoth guitars. I've been doing guitar tech work for over 40 years. What you are not grasping here is getting a neck and body from two unrelated orders - I received the body, then ordered a neck to match. Often Warmoth will insure a package the neck will fit the pocket - but that wasn't the case. So to trim the pocket took extra time.
So did scribbing off and milling lacquered over frets, meticulously without scaring the finish. If you watched the video you would understand that.
Building a basic rosewood tele is easy if you don't mill the fretwork, or have to fit a pocket, or shield the cavity with the good stuff. I spend a lot more time in the details than other techs, which is why I'm still in business 21 years later, my line is full 3+ weeks, and my customers come to me from Redding, Lake Tahoe, Bay Area, Fresno, Hawaii and Alaska.
If you don't want to pay for that level of quality. No worries. I'm very happy to not help you.

All that and at the end of the day if you ever want to sell that guitar its almost worthless. The resale value on non name brand guitars high quality or not is awful or it takes you months if not years to find someone to buy it for anything more than nothing. I could sell my 2017 US Fender Strat Pro for what I paid, I bought a mint used one so I didnt lose money buying a new one, in a month at most.
With all this said if you never plan to sell or have to knowledge you will lose your a$$ on it then party on.
You've missed the point, making you clueless. Good for you. When you make a living on these things as I and my colleagues do, and have service over 15,000 instruments in my 42 year career, you may grasp why working players will go the distance, regardless of what the headstock does not say.
Serious players (of which I'm not) don't care about the headstock name. They care about finding a luthier/builder who can make them exactly what they need.
Sadly, at the end of the day, (or years down the road) what Brian Z stated is pretty much true. It's a beautiful guitar, put together with great craftsmanship. Still, it will always be viewed as a partscaster.
