The mighty lawton ...still can't believe he is gone , along with hensley and kerslake , and very underated bassist trev bolder ( ...thankyou all for all the fantastic music that was put out over a staggering period of time + ...and mick and the boys are still going ng strong putty ng out great records till this day ! And thankyou for uploadjng , a real treat !!
The old fans of Uriah Heep took offense at what kicked Byron out of the group and instead took John Lawton, who, fortunately or unfortunately, had a much more luxurious and powerful voice than Byron, prompting understandable evil and envy of Byron's fans, who were trying to belittle the role of Lawton in the group.
Agree. The band did great things with Byron but from 1974 their work was very uneven with him, whereas I think the three Lawton albums show a return to more consistent form, even if the subject matter and parts of the sound became more radio friendly/pop. They still sounded like Uriah Heep, though. I also like to see bands develop their sound - I never wanted 15 versions of Machine Head from Deep Purple or 23 albums of Look at Yourself from Uriah Heep. Great as those albums are, it would be very boring indeed. However, the average fan seems to struggle when bands change and that really impacted on the perception of the Lawton years. It is a pity.
I used to play bass guitar, and much as I like this song, the most impressive thing to me is Trevor Bolder’s right hand. No kidding, folks, playing that many eighth notes on those piano strings can tear you up big time.
Uriah Heep in happier times, sadly this band was never to be happy after Byron,Thain, times, being a long time fan,did not realize that the band was in such turmoil, seems like things fell apart, interesting to note Gerry Bron, the mastermind had some very unkind words to say....Ken Hensley seemed to have a love, hate, relationship with David Byron, however music wise these to blokes were meant for each other, another rock n roll sad story.
Well it's much like Comparing Ozzy to Dio.. The original singer in a famous band is the voice of the band. Right? Is Ozzy better then Dio. Is David a better singer then John? I will say no. But will always love Ozzy and David's vocals on the original recordings from Sabbath & UH.. Dio & Lawton will remain two of the best voices in Rock history for me.. Just my 2cents Rock on
I really like both, though I probably lean more to Lawton. 'Better'? In what sense? Both seem to me to have excellent control, distinctive sound, good tone (there I lean to Lawton, just as in Deep Purple I lean to Coverdale over Gillan) and can tell a story. In terms of range ... well, in rock, does it really matter? If they sound good and can give drive and feel then that is what the genre really calls for.
Настоящий Хип. Моя любимая группа с 70-х и до сих пор. Восторг!!!
Thanks John and Ken für the music 👍👏😘

John Lawton's time in Uriah Heep was very underrated.
