As Travis Morrison says in an interview, the song is about someone you’ve been dating for 4ish months, then they drown, and die, and the awkward emotions of disbelief and feeling like you should care more after. The story comes from another interview by Michael Jordan, where that exact scenario happened to him.
I can totally see the parallels of the lyrics relating to being ghosted by a person. However, I think they stated in an interview that they wrote this about a relationship Michael Jordan had that ended because the woman passed away.

im not sure that is explicitly part of the song, i would love to know how you arrived at that conclusion though! a lot of songs are loosely about a subject and leave space for one's own interpetation.
