Saw him play in 2016 and it was life changing. Seen him play every year since then so I’ve seen him like 15+ times now and it’s mind blowing every single time. He’s my favorite artist and inspiring is an understatement!!
A modern guitar hero! Philip is one of my idols as a young canadian blues rock musician! Thank you guys for a great interview with him, it’s awesome to get some insights into the sauce that shapes his sound.
Congrats Chris! The Cowboy King sounds amazing, and IMO there is no better person alive to endorse it than Philip Sayce! He is absolutely the best blues guitar player alive today! I can't get enough of listening to him and watching him play!
@@VlrGuitarWorld I'm not an expert, but I can share my experience on that basis. I have a 5W tube amplifier, made according to the Fender Champ 53 scheme, handmade, point to point, even the transformers are hand-wound, EL 84,(instead of 6L6),Ecc 81,(instead of 5Y3), EZ 80 tubes. I installed a Jensen C10 R- 10" 25W, in it, it works perfectly, since I experimented for a long time with the choice of lamps and capacitors, it greatly affects the tone-clarity of the amplifier.I am currently using an EL 84 Tesla tube from an old Czech radio, Ecc 81-(JJ 12AT matched balance). On the second amplifier according to the Fender 5F 1 scheme, with 6l6 and 5J 3 tubes, the RCA tubes proved to be the best - the clearest tone. An 8" speaker cannot fully provide the right tone, as a 10" does... Here you can hear how C 10 R sound, www.jensentone.com/vintage-ceramic/c10r but the final choice is always your ear, because not everyone hears the same.
He's speaking there about mega vibe, but his best "vibe" sound comes from his tremolo dipped in a ton of a reverb (his song - Over my head, or something like that, live...)
Went to see him in Manchester a few weeks back and oh my…. Never seen anything like it. His Alchemy performance was godlike! Had pleasure of meeting him afterwards too and what an amazing guy. Can’t wait for him to come back again!
He sure is! That’s a great question, we were super glad to see Philip packing venues over here in the UK recently 🇬🇧 (which nowadays is a ridiculous achievement in itself) 🙌🔥
Audience don’t give a shit, they don’t know. They don’t know if his guitar is intonated,in tune or how many strings it has,all they know is if that shit was loud or not.
Well that was great. Serious question though - I guess Phillip & his sound guy just accept the horrendous loud hums & buzzes from the pedals, right? I realise that the noises add to the overall sound when everything is cranked so loud but it must be a nightmare for the sound guy? Or trying to record anything live? ✌️🎸✨
Thanks so much for watching! That’s a great question and we do actually do a little interview with the team in next weeks episode - discussing what it’s like to cater to such a beast like Philip live 🤣🙌🚀❤️
I wouldn't call his pedal board insane it seems like something Stevie Ray Vaughn would use today but he probably would have added some new stuff since there's a lot more options nowadays then in the 70s and 80s and even owning a dumble he still stacked a bunch of amps and was always searching for that ultimate tone and damn I would not tour with such a nice old strat
Nah I just think for some reason its never happened. Sayce has been on Bonamassas Blues Cruise and I thought they would jam together but didn't happen. Joe isn't afraid of playing with anyone.....he's shared the stage with Gales , Mancuso Trucks and Guthrie Trapp just to name a few so he would be just fine 👍
@ Youre absolutely right. Nothing can capture the exact sounds and feelings of real equipment 100%… however Digital is the closest most of us will get to the true tones of our guitar heroes🙌🏽
A ‘63 Strat with ‘58 pickups going into a rare Vox transitional modified wah going into a Tubescreamer into a cranked Tommy Cougar amp - himself being part of the signal chain is also a massive crucial factor… It’s not the sort of tone you can get in your bedroom and hearing it live is absolutely mental. Catch him if he’s nearby to you sometime!
Mother is one of the best looking strats ever... in my opinion! Great video guys!
Totally agree! Such a beautiful guitar 🎸 ❤️
One of the most humble axe slingers ever - so damned humble and talented beyond measure. Love this man!
Totally agree, what a legend! 🙌🚀❤️
Brilliant. Great to see them using Pedal Pawn pedals.
Thanks so much mate 🙌🚀❤️
Man, that’s the most patient rhythm section I’ve ever seen! Haha
🤣🤣👏 we were really happy that we got to shoot some content with both Bryan & Sam too!! 🥁🎸 coming next week 🚀
Awesome! You guys are great! Love the content!!!
This guy is amazing. He wears his influences on his sleeve, but he has a new way of expressing them.
So true ❤️🚀🙌
Good lerd, his tone is impeccable!!!
🎸🎸🎸🎸
100% 🙌🚀
Thank you guys so much for the video!!! I have been waiting for this one… I could feel the excitement 😅 Simply amazing! You guys are the best!!
Couldn’t hide the excitement on this one 🤣 thanks so much mate ❤️❤️
Amazing video, I can’t even imagine what that must have sounded like to be in front of the amp!! 🎉
🙌🚀🙌
Such a killer tone..insane!!
100% ❤️🚀
One of the very best if not the best
🙌❤️
Saw him play in 2016 and it was life changing. Seen him play every year since then so I’ve seen him like 15+ times now and it’s mind blowing every single time. He’s my favorite artist and inspiring is an understatement!!
That’s incredible that you’ve got to see him so much, it really is life changing isn’t it? 🚀❤️🎸
Saw him at The Sage in Gateshead in November. One of the loudest players I've heard, but he sounded so so good.
That’s amazing you got to see him! So incredible live 🤯🙌🚀
A modern guitar hero! Philip is one of my idols as a young canadian blues rock musician! Thank you guys for a great interview with him, it’s awesome to get some insights into the sauce that shapes his sound.
Us too 🚀🙌 you’re very welcome, stay tuned for next weeks upload as well as I think you will love it ❤️
Love this. Thanks so much
You are very welcome, thank you so much 🚀❤️
Congrats Chris! The Cowboy King sounds amazing, and IMO there is no better person alive to endorse it than Philip Sayce! He is absolutely the best blues guitar player alive today! I can't get enough of listening to him and watching him play!
Thanks so much for that nice comment mate! What a legend Philip is 🙌⚡️❤️
Sayce IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE FU%king amazing! I truly don’t understand why he isn’t crazy popular. All the best. ✌️
He’s the man 🔥🚀❤️
Can watch Philip soundcheck all day..
100%! You’ll love next weeks video too ❤️🚀
@@PedalPawn Can i get glassy clean tones on my 5 watt tube amp with 8inch speakers? or you need bigger speakers/higher wattage amps?

That’s awesome aha! Thanks so much for watching 🚀❤️
philip is one of my biggest inspirations, just wow
Us too! Such an all round legend 🎸⚡️
Been waiting for this! Sayce is so filthy the world needs more Sayce!🎄🎸💣
Awesome stuff!! & we totally agree ⚡️🚀🎸
LEGEND
💯👏🚀
The tone king!!!!
💯❤️🚀
Insane
🚀🚀
Wow!
🙌❤️
Reminds me of Ian Moore 90s era. Man miss those days.
❤️❤️
Been checking for this video for days now😂 met the guy in Manchester, absolutely surreal and incredible player. Cheers guys 🙌🙌
Haha awesome stuff!! Thanks for that & so glad you got to catch a Manchester Philip show! Soooo incredible 🤯❤️
@ was very ready to go buy tickets to the next 3 shows after Manchester, i so wish I did now 😂
That square face sound outrageously good ffs
Soooooo crazy 🤯🚨🙌
He's speaking there about mega vibe, but his best "vibe" sound comes from his tremolo dipped in a ton of a reverb (his song - Over my head, or something like that, live...)
Big love from South Africa, itching to get my hands on one of your pedals.
That means a lot! Cheers right back from the UK 🇬🇧❤️
You guys are out here doing the work of saints
🤣🙌❤️
Would love to see his ampsettings and guitarsetup!! Such a beautiful tone man!! great video!
Awesome stuff, we have a video featuring Philip’s guitars & soundcheck coming next week ❤️🙌🎸
Gawwwwddd!!!???..... you can literally almost physically chew on his tone! It's so thick with that Fuzz!😂❤😅
We were saying the same thing 🤤🫠❤️🎸 so crazy!!
Oh my, I love that tone... keep it rolling please come to the PNW.
Such an amazing tone 🔥🚀🎸❤️
Does he put his delays, reverbs and so on through the effects loop?
No, reverb is from the amp though.
Philip has Reverb from the amp 🎛️ & then the Line 6 delay is in front of the amp ✅🚀
Thank you 😊
Wow. Ridiculous tone. Happy he is using you pedals guys
So crazy isn’t it 🤯 & thanks so much 🎸❤️
Well deserved guys. Onwards and upwards to you both
mother is back !!!!!!!!!!
Yesss! Make sure you check out next weeks video 🎸👀❤️
Most underrated guitar player alive
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Went to see him in Manchester a few weeks back and oh my…. Never seen anything like it. His Alchemy performance was godlike! Had pleasure of meeting him afterwards too and what an amazing guy. Can’t wait for him to come back again!
You literally have to see it to believe it don’t you? 🤣🙌❤️
Does anyone know his exact signal chain here? I am trying to follow all the patch cords but I am not confident. Thanks.
Yes: TR > SF > Wah > Octavia > TS(in looper) > MV > DL4 > Amp
Thanks a lot. Why put the TS in a loop? I think SRV did this not sure why.
Was this Nottingham!? I saw him there. Also got my Cowboy King ordered ! Xmas can’t come quick enough!! Great video- thanks for posting/sharing.
It sure was 🙌🚀 and thank you so much for that, it means a lot 🤠 we are working overtime to try and make it happen 🔥❤️
❤
Yes mateee ❤️🚀
Didn't ask him about why he has his action so damn high!!!
🔥🔥
What is his pedal chain???
It´s a masterbuilt?
Vintage 1963 Strat called Mother 🎸❤️ More info coming next week in that upload 🚀
What amp he using in this live?
Thanks for your upload mate!
Great video.🙏
I need to double check the amp ❤️ thanks so much for the nice comment!
Ditto! Very Curious…
Custom By Cougar is the name of the brand. his model is called the Mother
@@RezaMatix Thanks for the answer! It’s a blackface style amp?
what amp is he playing through?
Great question! Need to double check 🚀🎸
He usually uses a Custom by Cougar head I believe.
Tommy Cougar 50w travel head (no box and just sits inverted with the tubes facing up) it’s monstrously loud.
He always sounds like something is about to catch fire or explode, or catch fire then explode. Real seat of your pants stuff
Totally aha 🚀🚀❤️
Awesome Chris have a wonderful day and also happy holiday season from Canada ❤😊🤢🇬🇧🏴🇨🇦🎄🌲also I have a stomach flu
Thanks so much mate, really hope you get better soon and greetings and happy holidays right back from the UK 🇬🇧 🚀❤️
Chris pls do a vid on what SRV would use gear wise in 2024!!!🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Great idea, thanks a lot! ❤️🚀
Can you describe his live tone as you hear it?
Because from my phone its fat, the highs are kinda ice pick to the ears but its massive!
Thanks for the question! Yes that’s a great observation!! It has it all, super fat / glassy all at the same time 🚀🔥
My main man.humble too.TONAL MONSTER.I forgot to say hello to mother.
The whole package for sure 🚀❤️
Phillip is the best. Wonder Why he's not in the big festivals @pedalpawn
He sure is! That’s a great question, we were super glad to see Philip packing venues over here in the UK recently 🇬🇧 (which nowadays is a ridiculous achievement in itself) 🙌🔥
Killer player, killer tone and a fellow Canadian! Love it
❤️❤️
Nice to see the original neck back on mother
Looks and sounds awesome doesn’t it 🎸🔥 if you’re interested, make sure you watch next week’s video as we actually ask Philip about the neck change 🚀
That's cool cause for a period it had a mid sixties fender strat neck with the big headstock
a noisegate at the end of the chain would clean up some of the hum and hiss..., imho.
Thanks for the comment! I’ve personally tried a noise gate in the past to do that exact thing, but you end up losing some frequencies overall 🚀
Not when it’s coming from the amp itself.
Philip Sayce is a master i just wish it would pernitrate his brain. less is more, we don't need to be at the speed of light all the time.
Great video guys! I think he's wearing some kind of earplugs or IEMs, isn't he? Cheers
Thanks so much! And that’s correct, I do believe he was wearing earplugs, we weren’t👂🔥🧯🤣🙌
Is that a picture of Bruce Campbell on that pedal?
🤣🙌 it’s not, but it can be anyone you want it to be 😝
@PedalPawn lol. Nice! Yup, it'll be Bruce.
His guitar hums a lot
It’s a sign of good old gear 😝🚀
Audience don’t give a shit, they don’t know. They don’t know if his guitar is intonated,in tune or how many strings it has,all they know is if that shit was loud or not.
I wonder how often he has to change strings.
💯❤️🎸
Well that was great. Serious question though - I guess Phillip & his sound guy just accept the horrendous loud hums & buzzes from the pedals, right? It’s always a fascinating conversation to think about what Stevie would’ve used 🤠 Philips rig is crazy to me, very inspiring 🚀
1 sring -lets it 013 etc
Holy reverb! He’s nasty
Sooooo cool 🔊🚀
then try 014-or 15 first str
That wouldn’t be feasible for a touring musician 👋🤕
Notice how this is the guy that Joe Bonamassa never invites to come on stage cause he would just rip them up
Nah I just think for some reason its never happened.
Would love to see Philip & Joe tear it up 🤯🔥🔥
I know, doing the Hendrix/SRV thing but come on...
He will get you eventually 🤣🚀🔥🎸

Hot take - can’t be done 🔥😝🚀
@ Youre absolutely right. Nothing can capture the exact sounds and feelings of real equipment 100%… however Digital is the closest most of us will get to the true tones of our guitar heroes🙌🏽

ok
Yeh. BATTERIES. Fewer wires.
🔋🔊🔥
Playing in trench coat is a first for me
@@jottieman he didn’t play the gig in it 😂
🔥🔥🔥🎸🧥
Clapton looked EPIC in his on the Forever Man video! Lol!
Great player but the whole Stevie thing is so played out....
I really think Philip Sayce is getting a whole new vibe 🤠🚀
change strings !its too soft!
If you get chance to watch, we actually did a shootout awhile back with 9s versus 13s and there was surprisingly a negligible difference 🎸🎸
Tooo many toys. Keep it simple. A good amp will do all that
I would say this is pretty minimalist for nowadays standards ❤️🔥 Each one serves a purpose 🚀
sayce is a poser
man can play, but in terms of tone, this is nothing special right? Just a strat and an overdrive pedal going into a wah. I don't get it.
Tone is subjective
Almost everything in guitar is subjective and that's why there diff genres
Ahh i disagree the tone is Philip’s Hands brother otherwise your right it’s a strat and and overdrive Get the same tone iand I’ll agree with you. 💯

Is he going to @thatpedalshow as well?
We’d love to see that one day 🎸❤️
Phillip doesn’t realize he’s on the pedal, they’re staring at each other,
congratulations to PedalPawn ♟️
🤣👏❤️
