YES! Finally someone who speaks out against this anti intellectual snobbery of musicians pretending to know better by knowing less. Thank you very much, Dom! I'll add a few more to your #12:
#13 Don't think people in the know don't see through your shortcomings when you stubornly refuse to learn music theory. They may not say anything and they might not even explicitly think about it but they know you fumble in the dark and they subconsciously write you off as a candidate for things you probably would like to be part of. Saying no to music theory is just not good enough.
#14 Just because some favorite artist of yours claim to not know any music theory doesn't mean they have no clue about what they're doing. They may have grown up in a musical family who shared the info in other ways than classical music theory.
#15 Just because some favorite artist of yours claim to not know any music theory doesn't meann you should adopt their approach in order to somehow get just as lucky as they did. It's just shooting yourself in the foot for no reason. You need all the knowledge you can get to be prepared for reality when it strikes ... and let's face it, prodigies are more few and far between than we care to admit, right? :D
#16 Knowledge of music theory does NOT make you lose your feelings! It only seems that way when you only know enough music theory to be danglerous. When you get past that stage you're free to express yourself in much more ways than you can ever imagine in your hole in the ground. The only advantage of sitting in a hole in the ground is it's close to the horizon, but that's counteracted by the small and limited size of the hole and no matter how you try the real world outside is much larger and more exiting than your hole in the ground, so just crawl out of there now! It's an order!;D

Learning music theory is a huge investment it is not learned overnight or in a week and even a year. The inner chord movements along with countermelodies not using loops and automated harmonies is the Journey that needs to be followed. Understanding the full compass of every instrument in the orchestra including big band is mandatory. The articulation of these instruments need to be executed properly and not played as if it was a Piano Part
If you can view the master classes of great arrangers it might encourage you to study privately. It all started with dietonic harmony But today’s genres are so distant from the propsed rules
If you have the patience and commitment to revisit the music of the classics leading into Dixieland and eventually in to Bebop you’d be off to a good start.
    Good luck to you all
Alan Russell professional Arranger since 1968

I started playing music when I was 13 years old, without a music background, except for those tiny things you learn at school. And I played with my bands and I had a lot of fun, but finally, after having time and the opportunity, I started learning music theory (and I'm still learning) and my tracks are something completely different to the tracks I made when I was 15, 20 or 30. I'm learning so much and my tracks now have a story to tell and it's like the instruments are having a conversation and not a fight like they had before learning theory xD Is not easy of course, but is rewarding and absolutely worth it, and as you said, is a shortcut to so many things because you have that idea in your head, and if you know the theory, you now how to put the idea on your track without wasting time playing thousand of notes until your ears tells you that finally it sounds cool. Another thing that I found after learning theory is that my tracks are more complex but in a good way, they're evolving and I'm making chord progressions or melodies that I wouldn't be able to do just playing without knowing where to go. Something that I did to make the learning theory more fun was to join a choir and that helped me to connect the sounds with the notes on the staff, and now I'm learning violin at the same time I'm learning how to read music. Luckily I have a pretty good ear and I can detect when a note is off, but after learning theory, I know exactly which notes are going to be off, and even if I want to break the rules, now I know how to do it and still, my music will sound good.

I remember when I got my first keyboard I used to "feel" my way to the sounds I wanted and had no idea what chords or notes I was playing. Fast forward many years later, learning music theory was the best thing I ever did to enjoy making music. I would rather just play a melody on my keyboard than manually muck around with the midi pencil tool. It helps to be more expressive and add variation. And yes theory makes you much faster at producing.

So true!!! I also started learning theory when I was a little Kid. I agree with every point! Especially when it comes to arrangement it helps so much. At one point I started to arrange the Instruments of my rock band like I would rather arrange string, namely splitting a chord voicing over bass and guitars. the result is so amazing, immediately one can introduce thirds and sevens in a rock track instead of playing boring doubled powerchords, also chord inversions are finding their way in my tracks. I never had ideas in that direction without music theory. Awesome Video!!!

I've been doing music for games since 1988, and my lack of any formal training (at all) has never been a problem for my work. Music is a language and I feel I can speak it up to some degree, but I know I would have reached far better results if I had know some music theory earlier (and listened too more varied music!).
I still do things my way, but I'm happy to be able to give proper names to the things I do and use thanks to what I learned about music theory in the recent years in channels like yours. At least now I know what chords and scales are! XD

I found a couple of plugins that make learning music theory more fun and may raise interest in musicians. Plugin Boutique Scaler has many ways to build chord progressions and transitions from a scale to another, it really invites you to set a scale and experiment new complex chord sequences; you click and hear individual chords, and then drag to your sequence. It has harmony theory inside, a sort of big expansion to the Cubase chord track. Music Developments Melodya has many ways to create (or modify) melodies by call and answers, it really helped me in visualizing the ABACBC structure of a melody, where each section can be transposed, inverted, musically transformed with rules (coupled with the chance of a light or strong constrained random generation). Both plugins support hundreds of scales. I love both because they have theory inside, there is more pleasure in experimenting with them than browsing an infinite midi collection or pressing a random generation button for an entire afternoon before getting close to a good result.

Most musicians I've known who avoid music theory have spewed the myth that theory knowledge would take away their creativity. They've typically been at the left peak of the Dunning-Kruger curve, believing they are already experts when they're actually novices, and they just don't yet recognize how terribly much they don't understand.
This is a great overview to dubunk that anti-music theory mythology and I hope it convinces more musicians to actually become literate about their art. Thanks, Dom!

I think we should define what‘s actually meant by „music theory“, as this is a very wide spectrum. I would add that knowing good music theory probably would also have prevented several music styles from being developed. So what you need to know really depends on what you would like to do.

  • @brianlespoir6287
    @brianlespoir6287 2 года назад

Music theory is simple, especially for dance music producers. White key's are flat key's, black key's are sharp key's. Every natural chord has different chords in it it. At least they contain 3 minor and 3 major chords and if you only use these minor or major chords you can't play out of tune, you can use the pentatonic scale of the root chord without playing out of tune within these chords. So start with F minor (because of the many black key's in the pentatonic scale, it will be easier to remember) and use only the 3 minor chords and play these in any order you like. Use the chords F minor, C minor and Bb minor and after you made your chord progression start moving, change the voicing of each chord by moving the key's within each chords 12 notes up or down so they are closer to each other, within the range of an octave. After that play melodies and a arpeggio in different octaves (layers) with the key's F flat, G sharp , A sharp , C flat, C sharp and D sharp and you can't play out of tune. This should be enough to make some techno. I like to start with an arpeggio with the key's F flat, C sharp and D sharp and then play a chord progression and change the voicing so it pleases the ears and comes closer the the key's in the arpeggio. Your next step should be using major chords in a minor chord progression.

My son has no Idea about core progression and basic stracture of scales and so on
he has it as you said ready made like you said when you open an chord track it advises you about it's progression
or like all those "tutorials" everybody now is fed with a spoon , nobody works that hard to dive into it as long as you get instant results, sorry that is what mainstream music sounds like today
I'm 61 now and I'm still learning , even when I drive home and listen to music that is far out of mainstreem (like GENTLE GIANT for example) my wife and kids complain about the annoying music I'm so exited about...
My son plays on keyboard mostly thing he heard but I know the wrong tha sound bad and out of it's course and I know if he knew some more basics he woud have done it different.
I bought him an electric guitar this week and Im giving him some of the boring stuff ,not to change his "drive" but to give him some insights that will one day take him out of the "safe zone" and he will use it

Yes Dom, completely agree with fact that music theory knowledge is very important. If you editing, so tuning a vocal for example, u’ve tuned it, sent and musicians say: “Man, those moments are not in key for a semitone, you don’t hear that? And those choirs are flat by the semitone too, did you do you work, that we payed you for?” That would be pretty embarrassing. And there wouldn’t be things like “spectral conflicts” on a mixing stage, if you know what you’re doing. So yeah, I agree more than 100 %

That advice is as clever as "It's easy to write a good book, just use the letters you used in your first sentence over and over again".

If you ever feel inclined to produce a series of instructional music theory videos (basics, intermediate, and advanced), I'm sure many of us would excitedly watch all of them. I know you're very busy with all the other stuff you do, but we would all love it if you could!

Can anyone recommend good resources to learn music theory? I'm not a beginner i played instruments many years ago but never really got really good at anything and I would like to be able to make use of the knowledge I already have and also further it more.
I know major scales and chords and can read music but never really got the hang of bass clef. I mainly play the piano and can learn songs very slowly from a combination of reading music and ear but when I sit at a piano I'd love to be able to just improvise and come up with chord progessions to allow me to produce music in cubase. So I guess I need to understand more chord progressions, and anything that can help me actually turn what I already know into actual music plus brush up on all the basics. I would love to be able to play soulful, jazz, blues type stuff. Appreciate any advice.
    Thanks Dan

I compose by ear and experimentation which is very rewarding but also very spontaneous. One of my first cubase (studio 4) works was a piano /strings combo lasting over 5 minutes built around a repeating left hand piano baseline. Apart from the first few planned bars, the rest was made up entirely the hoof. Fortunately I was recording ( midi) otherwise it would be lost.
I have little choice as I can't read a note of music to save my life. Most annoying.

I'm knowhere near Dom's knownledge but I'd say the same. Management, Mixing and sound coming at the end of the process. To have a good basis, a good canvas (with Chord/Harmonies that will determine the Bass, the rythm) is the best start you can ever have.

UNISON'S MIDI PACK! LMFAO!!! No seriously, I'd say all those things are equally important for different reasons. It depends on where in the production and/or marketing stage you are. You will find, though, that you are more inclined to some elements and not others. For instance, because I happen to be a vocalist, voice is really important to me. I also love harmonies and chords. I find it easier to build my rhythm section after tracking my bass and chords and melodies. All these elements (amongst others) ultimately come together to make a successful pop song.

This is just a popular opinion. What is easier to say ? “Work on your craft and you’ll improve” or “just take a shortcut - don’t lift a finger, you don’t need it”. People who suggest that either are too lazy themselves and they don’t want other people to better them or they have something to sell as a substitute for the best way to do things.

Another point about working with other musicians in the recording studio. If you don't know music theory you most likely will waste time in the studio. And time is money in the studio and for the hired musicians. IF you know the language of music theory, as you said, you can better express your vision for the project to the studio musician. You will get to making music faster. On the other hand, some studio musicians might even refuse to work with you if they have to take the time to analyze your music before they can lay down a track.

I never thought this is a thing. I am no music theory expert. No one told me I have to learn about Chord progessions and so on. It just came along with all theses other things like sound design or basic DAW knowledge. As I became better in producing, the theory behind music also came along. Or maybe it was Ray Harmony on RUclips. But anyway. I think it gets hand in hand with learning about producing music. I started with remixing and always asked: what key is the song in, what bpm? What are the chords? Now I just don‘t think about it. I play along and find the right notes on the keyboard and from there I found the key. Sometimes it happens that I think I found the key but there is something wrong. Like it is not major or minor. Then I learned about modes… and so on.

    • @DomSigalas
      @DomSigalas  2 года назад +1

Thank you for sharing Michael. I think the problem is that something so obvious is demonised and people are encouraged to skip it completely. Why? Because it’s extra effort, it’s not as sexy as a new plugin or synth. You see so many synth RUclipsrs out there not having a single clue on what to play. This is not cool, it’s not a new way of making music, it’s pure laziness. There’s no excuse anymore, all the info is out there, like you very rightly said. Then these same people that’s never bothered taking music seriously go and preach that music theory is not worth learning and who cares. And then they go and make a paid ad video for a couple of midi pack companies :P

    • @DomSigalas

The chord track in Cubase is actually like having a music theory teacher in your DAW. It helps but it also makes you learn- check the circle of fifths -just this is an invaluable tool in order to see harmonic relationships. You are always better off with music theory regardless of the DAW you use- Cubase just happens to be very musical because it was not created by DJ’s but from people that know about music theory. Other DAW’s are musical ones but there are some out there that they safe not focused on this for sure.

In my mind learning music theory can only be compared to learning a language. Sure you CAN successfully communicate without knowledge of the language but will it ever be as effortless, fast or correct as it would be if you knew the language? No, obviously not. It should go without saying but here we are.
