    Something that gets forgotten is that Boimler is actually pretty tough. Compared to the likes of Mariner who's unreasonably good in a fight he comes up short, but when he's in a brawl he's able to last a while, which is sometimes all you need in a critical situation. Like when he was in the mine trying to survive Packlets during his time on the Titan, he survived long enough to evac his team and himself.
    Also when he was being hunted a few episodes back. Sure he got caught, but he was able to evade in limited space for a long time before he made the mistake that got him speared.

    • @Timeward76
      @Timeward76 Год назад +9

      Boimler was REALLY toughened by his time aboard the Titan. It made him stronger and more confident to have served under Riker. Mariner is unreasonably good in a fight because she LOVES fighting. She works out by simulating a CARDASSIAN PRISON BREAK, her weapon of choice is a god damn Bat'leth, and she very likely served during the Dominion War. Mariner LOVES to fight, so obviously she's had a LOT of training.

    I find it funny that the outpost scientists have the nerve to look down on Star Fleet cuz they're job is 5 times more dangerous and Star Fleet normally cleans up after their messes. Being an outpost scientist is worse than being the red guy in star trek lol cuz you're more likely to die a horrific death more than anything

      To be fair, from the outpost scientists perspective they likely see themselves as willingly putting themseles in those risky situations too for the purpose of research on alien civilization. It maty not be that they are neccsarily as truely opposed to starfeet as much as them being rude makes them seem but that over time interecting with starfleet effects on their own projects has downsized their feelings for how beneficial starfleet's behavior is at times.

    That’s the equivalent of tearing up a dude’s master’s degree. This show isn’t great about making it understood, but not everybody on a starfleet ship is an officer, you have to actually go through the academy and study stuff like astronomy, advanced mathematics, biochemistry, sociology, political science, it would be a lot of work.

    After watching this episode, I quickly came to realize that archeologist is based on the ‘other side’ of every fandom. The kind that is critical and wrong over almost everything. Boimler is that nice, tolerant fan who just snaps after seeing that one critical fan for the umpteenth time.
    -Starfleet is a military - Except they explicitly say and insist they’re not on more occasions than one can count. Just because you can defend yourself doesn’t mean you’re a military. And the military isn’t the only one with their ranking system, the Fire Department is an example. Plus what are you gonna do during a time of war when you don’t have a formal military? You organize, it’s not a free for all. But Starfleet is not a military. If they were something like a paramilitary, then they’d say that.
    -Captain Freeman bombed the Paklets, good on her/she should be arrested or die - Rewatch the episode, they literally said and showed how she was framed.
    -The Federation is evil/shitty, the Prime Directive is awful and wrong, they should help people not let them die - Why would Gene of all people want to make the Federation such a bad organization? Use your imagination as to why the Prime Directive is the way it is before you start spitting. It’s a necessary double-edged sword. Cultural contamination is a very serious issue.
    And I can continue. Star Wars goes through the same stuff within its fandom, they’re the first example I can think of off the top of my head. In my experience, anyway, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen somebody call or suggest the Jedi are evil. It’s like, you do realize that Darth Sidious is still the *bad guy,* right?

      well if i must do the devil's advocate, Starfleet being military or civilian (scientific and exploration) is not a clear cut as it has mission that cover both (as it also the primary defense of the UFP)...honestly i always thought of her as a multimission organization that after decades of peace is somewhat ashamed of her military part and desire people forget that exist. For the prime directive, it was basically a guideline for captains that were for months out of contact from the command that with the passing of time has evolved in something like a biblical commandment

    • @wiilov
      @wiilov 2 года назад +6

      Star Wars doesn't work as clean cut. Because the theory/spirituality of the force is based on Taoism. And the very act of dividing the whole into "Good/Evil" dichotomy is reductionist and counterintuitive to the philosophy itself.

    • @mastere6115
      @mastere6115 2 года назад +2

      To be fair, like said above, Star Wars isn't as clean cut. As the Jedi, were not perfect and frankly were not on the most "good" guys" it was the select few that were actually good or decent guys.
      As their morals and ideals were so peculiar and undermining, especially when it came to Anakin. It didn't make them bad guys obviously, but they weren't what you could really call good guys.
      And for palps, it was pretty damn bad admittedly, not much to beat around the hush on that one

      @teleportedbreadfor3days 2 года назад

      @@lukedalton I wouldn’t go as far as call it commandments, but I think you have the right idea. As for the military part, certainly ashamed of the necessity to band together as one and fight wars but they don’t try to have people forget. They’re not a military but you need to fight sometimes if you wanna exist, and coordination is essential in anything war. I wouldn’t say Starfleet is civilian, either, though. They’re something more, I believe and something good.

    I love how this is a recurring theme with Lower Decks cast. Even Ryker and his hit squad bring it up.
    They all just wanna run around and scan shiny things and map quasars. Sure blowing up badguys is fun but a lot of starfleet is legitimately unhappy with all the fighting they have to do. All the traps and snares and betrayals and romulan nonsense.
    "We just want to scan quasars"
    Mar says it, Tindy says it, Boimler, Ryker, The Captain says it.
    Its oddly... Wholesome, that a lot of star fleet would be super happy being left alone to scan rocks and poke artifacts.

    I kind of like how Boimler also succinctly addresses the whole military aspects of Star Fleet: they don't WANT to do it, but no one else in the Galaxy can or even tries to step up. Star Fleet, for all its issues, always fights for the rest of the Galaxy PURELY OUT OF MORAL OBLIGATION.
