  • This is a speech from Mata'afa Elia Autagavaia during the Aganu'u ma Measina a Samoa Festival 2013 held in Apia.
    The video was originally posted by D Misa in April 2014.
    I was quite impressed with listening to Autagavaia as he went through the do's and don't's of how to participate in a ma'ulu'ulu, Sasa, fa'ataupati, or even playing the part of Fuataimi or perhaps singing a pese. Other cultural activities include dancing in the roles of Taupou, 'Aiuli, and most importantly, getting involved with folafola sua.
    The importance of D Misa's video and Autagavaia's message were instrumental in why I made this supplement video. I have edited Misa's work to include English translations/subtitles for the benefit of those who have not yet had the pleasure of understanding our language but still curious about our culture. I have also cut most of the non-spoken portions (four minutes in total) of the original video to reduce editing time. All of the original dialogue is retained.
    This is my pilot attempt at translating so please forgive me if you find a better way to express our mother tongue than what I have attempted here in this video. However, I do wish that you find this helpful to better understand the message Autagavaia has been trying to deliver.
    This is a non-profit exercise and will always remain so.
    Please feel free to drop me a note if you find this beneficial in any way at all. On the other hand, If I have stepped on any toes in terms of copyrights, image rights, licenses, etc, please let me know as we all have room to learn.

    Whoever translated this did a very good job. It is very precise, almost word for word - unlike loose translations, of which I am not a fan, but I take it that sometimes loose translations are necessary. Again, good translation. I wonder who did it, for I am very impressed. And thanks for the upload.

      +Samoa Moni Thank you for your encouragement and wonderful comments. You might want to look at the Published Notes above and click on "Show More" to read my full commentary about this video. This has been my first attempt at translating anything Samoa/English or English/Samoan so any feedback (good or bad) goes a long way in improving things from this end. Manuia lou weekend.

      Harry Lee Excellent job, bro. Just one thing. I noticed you didn't translate the word "susuga". That seems to be the case with many Samoan films. Perhaps you should give it a second look. How would you translate "susuga" or "afioga"? Do you think an English equivalent would be 'honorable one', or 'excellency", etc.?

    • @Harry.Lee.
      @Harry.Lee.  8 лет назад

      +Samoa Moni .....Oh! that might be a tough one. There are no direct or similar English translations for Afioga and Susuga. But I guess you can still use 'honorable one' or 'excellency' depending on the person's title or rank in any organisation. Other nouns that can be sourced for usage as a preposition to Afioga and Susuga might be Eminence, Esteemed, Prestige, Prominence, and many others.

    • @theephraimite
      @theephraimite 8 лет назад +1

      Harry Lee Exactly. When addressing TuiAtua, TuiA'ana and Malietoa, susuga would translate as majesty or highness, whereas addressing a chief who goes by susuga, it would be translated as - among other things - honorable one (I guess). I've been working on something, and I don't like leaving anything untranslated. If I had the money, I'd hire you instead. Thanks for your insights.

    this is amazing wow we need more of this knowledge and wisdom to be taught so when we perform we know right from wrong and why

    • @Harry.Lee.
      @Harry.Lee.  4 года назад

      Thank you Lani for taking the time to comment. You are absolutely on point. There are many things we do incorrectly albeit unintentionally. We have great knowledgeable teachers out there whose wisdom are not channelled to the right audience as we envisaged.
      That's why, when I found this vital piece of gem I realised how important it is. So I immediately translated it for the benefit of the many out there like yourself.
      Thanks to Autagavaia for allowing us to broaden our awareness.

      +D Misa Thank you uso for your affirming comments. Although Autagavaia is the one delivering the all-important message, you're the one who gave us the gateway to receiving that message. So, thank you for connecting the dots.
      Yes, by all means share it. The embarrassing thing for me is, I was also guilty of allowing a "taupou" to stand on my back. LOL.
      I was having difficulty translating some of our orator language especially the one you cannot translate literally. It's the best I could muster. Manuia lou aso..... and thanks again.

    • @Sam0anKnight07

      Bro, the translations are perfect and on point. Malo lava. I too was also guilty of doing the whole lie down infront of the taupou thing until a few of us got oke'd back in St Joe for doing that. LOL But it's allgood, we all learn from our mistake. I just pray and hope that people will indeed take this advice and learn from it. Like Mata'afa said "a le fa'asa'oa nei, o ai la fa'asa'oa - a'o po'o afea foi e fa'asao ai"
      :)

    Its not true that the siva uʻu isint traditional, this is an old dance move, now days people want to jump on the bandwagon with what this guy says. The brother has always laid his life down for his sister, thats why the saying goes, o le tamatane e ola ae oti lava mo lona feagaiga

    • @luititoa4563
      @luititoa4563 5 месяцев назад

      If this isn't traditional, then they would've add this when the first Taualuga created in the 1920s. I've watched the 1920s version and not once i see any one man or woman does the lay down infront of the performer🤔
