This young man is going to do good for us all when he gets out of the institution and is allowed to apply his knowledge and abilities. Thank you, JD Kaim, and best of luck!!!!
This is what OLD beauacracies do when faced with innovations. Stop clutching your pearls, Univ of Washington. Bring that kid in to upgrade your tired old registration system.
He committed the grievous wrong of streamlining the registration process for his fellow students. In doing so he highlighted the inefficiency of the process and the frustration of the students. The inefficiency exists because it is allowed to exist. It exists to reinforce the power and control that the university has over the students. The university is reminding the students that they are the gatekeeper and that they and they alone will decide if the students get the classes that they want.

A lot of classes have to be taken in a predetermined order but wherever there is flexibility a smart student wants to avoid having too many demanding classes simultaneously. They know it's a good idea, they just want it to be their idea. I wouldn't be surprised to see them start using that software and take full credit for it. This is why we can't have nice things
So… why does the school use automated tools to register us if it’s not allowed? They need to practice what they preach then and go back to file cabinets with physical files for each student.
I can absolutely understand why the school prohibits buying or selling class seats, but I'd really appreciate hearing why UW doesn't allow _swapping_ of class seats, even via automated tools.
I am sorry to say that I am disappointed with UW. College application process itself is a very stressful process. When someone come up with a new idea, they should encourage and guide. Instead they are punishing him. What a losers.
100% on this talented young man's work. UW administrators that made this decision are egomaniacs and utterly stupid for punishing him instead of taking advantage of his work to make the process easier for everyone. This is the difference between people in innovative industries versus people whose main job is pushing papers around.

If they had let him improve students experience for free they would be able to waste countless dollars paying some consultants to do the same thing, only worse.
Hey smart kid, my daughter is a bit older and also was a comp science major at UW going for her master degree. I told her don't be what I was, your husband can be a bit younger too :).
The UW is a waste of money and time. I’ve worked in many departments, and I’ve also taken classes there. Run, don’t walk away from this institution of oppression and politically “correct” BS.

He could’ve approached the university with his idea rather than going off the books. They might’ve listened to him and worked to incorporate some of his innovations…..
Read your Student Handbook! I'm sure it will get worked out, but you cannot just willy nilly add a Registration Service. There are many protections in place to protect your privacy, and make sure you qualify for said classes.
I understand school system suck and old, but as student I don't think it's our job to change whatever school has. after all, school is not ours and we have no right to change anything since we are just a student. All we need to do is study hard and graduate. so if you want to help make world a better place like you said, graduate first and find field or company that can help/support you.
Actually, it is a public institution and supposed to have community and student representation but that's all just elitist fakery in most bureauracies.

@saskialolita, no, I don't. 🤣. If there is sarcasm, I missed it.

UW admin is a joke. They should be paying this student to buy his code to integrate into their registration website.

This University should be ashamed....
Why? Because he broke the rules??
This kid will make so much money in the future...Dumb college administrators don't like that someone solved a problem that the college created.
He's way to smart for that university. Hopefully a company sees his talent and picks him up.
There's good chance that he can land a career without degree lol
UW does its best to keep Asian enrollment as small as possible.

Why not? The student broke the rules. Good idea or not, you follow the procedures you agreed to when you go to school. Like getting permission.

Follow the rules, perhaps give it to them for free to help the registration process if he really wanted to help out.
