Hey man, I've found this gem in 2024. Thanks for this. Saved my ride and a bunch of headache :)
Glad I saw this. I was so nervous about trying this....but challenged myself because my curiosity was driving me nuts. I was able to find out quickly that slamming my stem was a neck breaker. Instant pain with a centimeter drop. Put it right back with my 15mm underneath. Apparently I'm between sizes, on a 52 tarmac with a 120 head tube. If I rode a 54, my headtube would be 140mm and wouldn't need the spacers. Very helpful vid. And yeah, it takes very little to compress.
Thanks so much for watching and i am glad I could help :) but yea it is an easy job
I would recommend a good torque wrench for anyone who does their own work! As a reminder always torque equally and evenly across!
yea start diagonly and dont just make each one super tight, like you said evenly will do the trick
Awesome guys. Thanks you so much I was battling issue with play at stem forever, and finally your video pop up, and one more and I just followed steps and after couple months its finally tight. Thank you so much
you are very welcome
This was great and very helpful, I look forward to more of these. 👍🏼
thanks so much, if you ever wanna slam your stem you can do it at home now
Cool little tip. Never knew that! I’m not much of a mechanic and I probably would take it in since the only thing I can do is put in handlebar tape, but watching your videos makes it a little easier to try some things. I like the flush look better!
thanks so much!!! I hope I explained it easy enough, and it is pretty simple just make sure the top bolt is snug first and then tighten the two pinch bolt on the stem
Thank you! I could not figure out why there was still play in my stem after adjusting the height and this was the info I needed.
Glad it helped!
I’m new to biking….and the vocabulary. This helped me a lot. Thanks
You are very welcome
That was very straightforward and helpful thanks so much
thank you very much for watching!!
Thank you sir, much appreciated. I just did it on my FELT VR5 and it feels so much better.
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the tip. I will take it to my bike shop for them to replace the loose bearings.
for sure I am glad you got the help
thank you I did have to slightly loosen head set belt and followed your instructions job a good one
thanks so much!!
Like these quick informative videos.
you are welcome
I really needed it! Thank you! :-)
you are very welcome
brilliant Vid GC, more of the same please..........these are perfect for noobs like myself...........
stupid noob question: is it strictly necessary to use a torgue wrench when doing this or if you dont have one just common sense and normal tighting without going nuts and cracking the fork will do aswell ?
honestly I odnt use them on a lot of builds ubt thats because I do them so often, if I have it around I will snug it up with it but usually I can gauge it myself, so as long as your not overtiightening you should be good
@@GCPerformance18 thanks for the reply mate, its just i havent got one at the moment and my seat clamp says 7nm, i have tightend it up to "normal" tight i am a bit scard
to over tighten it.....
Always interesting
thanks so much :))
Very helpful indeed, thanks a lot @GC Performance
thanks so much!!
I saved this video. Thanks for the information.
thanks so much and I hope it helps you out :))
Thanks for this 🙏. If possible for the next video, please make about internal cable routing for the shifter
What do you mean??
@@GCPerformance18 hi thanks for reply.
I have the same Tarmac SL6 like the video and planning to replace the shift cable.
The problem is I don't know whether the housing cable go in to the frame as well.
Or it will be stripped from the down tube port, so only inner cable go inside the frame.
This video helped me a lot
I am glad I could help :)
Do there need to be a spacer at the bottom? Or can the handle stem touch at the bottom?
awesome video helps a lot
Glad you think so! thanks so much
I’d love to see your method for cutting a steerer … youtube is full of them and they all seem to skip over some of the things to take into consideration when measuring…dont ask me how i found out.
I can walk through it one day lol it is just basically me slicing it with a screw driver measure once cut once and send it ;)
@@GCPerformance18 lol!
I tried that!! …. Bought a new fork 🤷🏽♂️
What's your opinion on white frames? Too much hassle to keep clean?
as long as they are gloss not a big deal at all but if it is matte color they are impossible, its like pushing dirt around
in death, when we relive our lives, we never our mistakes, we only regret the things we didnt try!!❤❤❤ try the white...
Can you raise it any higher with the setup you started with, with all the spacers below? I have a Specialized Allez Sport and wouldn't mind it raised a half inch or so. Would I need a different stem? New to road biking. Thanks
different stem with a more aggresive angle up or you can add a stem extender up but then you run the risk of having to replace the cables and housing to make them long enough which costs around 30-50 depending on the shop
@@GCPerformance18 Thank you very much. Appreciate the detailed answer.
works and looks wonderful
awesome!!
Can you do this with no spacers at the bottom of the stem? Like super slammmed?
you need something to block it from binding on the bearing, so no not really
Really helpful and simple to follow...thanks for this.
Glad it was helpful!
Sick bike
thanks so much
Hey great video quick question those carbon spacers looks great what brand are?
specialized
@@GCPerformance18 thanks but I did find any for sale
Why do they recommend a 5mm spacer at the top so that the cap is not flush? Ive heard this a few ties and im not sure why
idk it is so you can leave come room or put the stem back up if you do not like the position
might I asked you something.... can you installed a rival rapide full carbon cockpit handlebar on this bike in the video here???
yes u can, but the cables will still be outside the frame, they will be internal on the bar but come out in front of the headtube
@@GCPerformance18 uhhuh the transfer between the handlebar and frame will not be perfectly flush I guess, cause there are no spacer available I think 🤔
sir pls i’m in a desperate situation i took out my “plug” by accident and when i did i heard something drop in the bike and now i can’t seem to put the plug back.
nice... now do the aerofly 2
lmao alright sounds good
Thank you!
you are welcome
Is something wrong, if you cut steerer tube too short? And then the top of your stem is for example 0,5cm-1cm above the edge of the steerer tube? Then solution is, you take more spacer's out, but can you just leave it like that or not? Just curious.
no you can't because if you cut it 1cm too short then the upper stem bolt wont have much support and it can damage the steerer tube.
no because if the top cap is flush with the steer tube then then when you tighten down the bolt and the compression cap it will bottom out on the steertube and then not allow the proper compression
i wonder how long the compresion plug is becuise i think its 30mm and youre bottom stem bolt isnt supported which can resoult in damagin the fork steerer tube or braking it
no it owrks its the specialized stem steerer and usually from factory they aren ttorqued down all the way so we have to do them at the shop, but its the right height
@@GCPerformance18 what I ment was that the compresion plug is 30mm long and if you put 15mm above the handlebars the bottom bolt of stem will not be supported, here the video that explains what I mean:
ruclips.net/video/vxoozD4WdJk/видео.html
5 mm spacer above the stem is ideal.
Anything more then that is potentialy dangerous
@@mikicastan yes, but he put 15mm spacers above the stem
Very informative, was just about to lower the stem on my new road bike, putting the spacers above before committing to shorten the fork steerer tube. However, I'll now take it under further inspection and possibly order an expander for fork steerer tube support.
What if you lower your stem but your expander plug isn’t long enough because how the fork was originally cut. Technically, wouldn’t the stem be clamping into half or not on the plug itself/ possible cracking?
yea the expander plus are not there too give the stem support for clamping, there are tons of expander plugs that are not large enough for a stem size, the carbon steerer is the main point of support, and you can run it under there no problems at all, its a good way to lower the stem and not have to make the full decision to cut it and then have to ride that if your not comfortable there
I had my handlebar come loose/rotate during riding today, which made me crash lukcily into the grass at 36km/h. I used a torque wrench with 6nm because mine doesn't spec anything on the handlebar. Is there anything required additionally to prevent this from happening? Like carbon paste between stem and handlebar to increase friction or thread locker for the bolts? Is there a different procedure for TT bikes, since there is more weight on the handlebar?
thanks for the video - i always wanted to be in more aero position on my cannondale. the video kinds of gives me the confidence of doing it on my own
my stem is that of fsa and i could see there are 6 (10mil each) rings. is it a good practice to keep at least 30mil stem length (when you’re slamming it)
no you can run it all the way slammed if you like
@@GCPerformance18 thanks - i slammed it to 30mil for now, thought of adapting to this change for now. Will try to do it all the way down 👍
Can you post a video of the same thing for a Scott Addict RC?
possibly, you just need to change a couple things on there
Ht bro, i have a problem, i want to upgrade my fork On my mtb, meta ht commencal, but the steerer tube in the one a bought is 18cm and the stock one 20cm, how afect in handling? I dont know if i would sent it back or remove all the spacers so it can fit
yea you would have to remove spacers that is all, try to get a new fork that fits the bike next time and can be cut the right way for the bike
I have a Caledonia 5 same bolts. Would I put the spacers on top after removing it from bottom?
yes you need to keep the same amount of materials if you are not cutting the fork yet so whatever you remove from the bottom you put to the top
Lol I tried this and now my headset is so tight it won't even turn. I think I prefer a loose fork over a stiff fork
mayube need new headset bearings, they couldn't be completely worn out, this does not make this tight something is binding somewhere
hey man by any chance do you know the maximum number of spacers that is safe to put under my stem? I have an S-works tarmac SL6 with 45mm spacers under the stem and im not sure if that amount of spacers is still safe to ride. Thanks!
Pretty sure 30mm is maximum!
Why do you need spacers? I just adjusted the stem high and tightened it. Do I really need to buy them?
nope you do not
@@GCPerformance18 any advantages to buying them like less stem stress or something?
A whats up..can you recommend a good integrated stem to hide cables but can still add spacers..I have the cervelo caledonia with mechanical ultegra and i like the original stem height...i dont want to cut my fork..i want to use the "DEDA SUPERBOX STEM" but I don't know if the stem can be used with spacers to keep my original factory height. I'm looking for that clean flush cockpit look where the cables go internally into the stem but I don't want to slam it like I did my tarmac sl6..
ooof I do not cervelos that well but I mean there stock bar and stemcombo they have for there high end models works pretty well hiding the cables
Lack of grease can also cause movement I've found
maybe but hoenstly it should not
Recomended bike size for 5'5?
I would say small
@@GCPerformance18 thanks a lot and keep safe
Can someone tell me what the tool he's using to loosen and tighten called?
If i got a new Carbon fork that i need to cut by my self. Is it possible to have 35mm spacer below the stem. Everyone is saying maxinum 30mm. Is it not safe enough with 35mm spacer?
You can do 35. I have seen people do more as well for custom builds. Just be mindful of watching potholes and stuff
boom time to slam my stem and have a perpetually sore back!
lmaoooo
that is exactly what happened to me
Why wont my go down deeper?
I do nto knwo
Correct way to do it is to buy a new stem with a lower angle 🧐
lmao but why when u do not need to spend the money you can try before u buy
10x, Specialized for the dumbest compression plug on the market. First thing I did on my new frameset was to throw it away.
lmaooo its not that bad, just from factory you have to re tighten it
@@GCPerformance18 Once installed it's very hard getting it out. A flawed design compared to a normal plug where the lip is a separate piece.
Torque is key, too much catastrophe not enough you get slop and catastrophe!
yes I agree 100 percent especially for people who are doing this at home and dont do it everyday. you need it for sure
Thanks but do you really need f gloves. Iam no wear experience to this guy
As a heavy line mechanic the gloves are funny, you wearing a condom just in case?
I do everything, I always wear gloves, I work on the bikes but if a customer walks in, I drffop everything to help them out, we are a retail store that values walk in customers, so I dont want to walk out there with greasy hands or dirty hands, it is more of a control thing
What if you want to make it higher than the default? I just got my first road bike and when I tried to raise it, I noticed that if I raise it a bit more than what it came with on my bike, the Bolt on top doesnt screw anymore because it's not long enough. Do I just need to buy a longer Bolt 🔩?
it is noit recomened to make it higher, because it will not clamp on the fork properly and have nothing to tighten on too
@@GCPerformance18 Damn. I thought I could buy a longer bolt to be able to tighten it. Just couldn't find the name of that bolt. Guess it's not possible based on your comment 😞. Ty for the reply 👍
