CAN PHSIOTHERAPISTS ADD THE TITLE "Dr." IN FRONT OF THEIR NAMES?
There has been an ongoing debate for years that who all can be called as doctors in India as there are a number of healthcare streams in the country. However, in a judgment released by Supreme Court (SC) way back in 1996, it was held that medical practitioners who have an MBBS degree and above are alone referred to as doctors. Physiotherapists register with their council as therapists only and cannot prefix their names with the title of ‘Dr’. The Madras High Court had also said that even Ayurveda and Siddha practitioners should not use this title.
However, the Indian Association of Physiotherapists has a different story to tell. According to the association, physiotherapists can use the title ‘Dr’ before their names and the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have no statutory power to regulate the profession in India. The General Secretary of IAP has started a trial against IMA and MCI for defaming the professionals by asking them not to call themselves as doctors. They also said that physiotherapist will prefix their names with ‘Dr’ and suffix the same with (PT) and write physiotherapist in all their communications.

Physiotherapy(BPT) some realities
1)The vast majority of physiotherapists are unemployed or in low paying jobs and many have sought other employment for livelihood.
2)There are over 5060 physiotherapists passed out in South India alone. The number of physiotherapists required in a 200-bed hospital is just one. Those who have studied in previous years are remains here unemployed, then how many hospitals will be needed to get them jobs here.
3) It is a fact that the job opportunities abroad are decreasing drastically every year. Migrant physiotherapist , in UK, US Canada are working in petrol pumps, supermarkets and hotels. Only natives of respective countries only getting jobs in Gulf countries
4)Many hospitals now converting their physiotherapy department to Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR)HOD will be physiatrist (MBBS DPMR )role of a physiotherapist in this department is just a helper
5)Since there is no regulatory authority(council) for physiotherapy in India somany unautherised practices (quakery)going on in this field This also reduces job opertunities
6)Now a days new threat also there... Bvok physiotherapy that is common in normal arts collage only 3 years, course. Hospitals appoint these people with less salary
7)In big hospitals physiotherapy is under physiatrist when it comes to small hospital it is under nursing suprend. It is duty of physiotherapist to pull physio machine trolley to bed side of each patient in wards for treatment their condition is bad than ward boys
8)Running own clinic need huge investment no patients approach physiotherapist directly. Reference from medical doctors is a must usualy they give pain killers to patient or ask commission for each reference. Majority of clinics closed already or in loss
9)"Physiotherapists are called as doctors "" these are only just canvasing words of agents during admision. In practical sence none of the hospitals, gov bodies allow this
10)Going for MPT (post graduation)not makes changes there is no propotionate grouth in income after doing that. Main aim of mpt holders are to become professor in bpt collages but collages appoint physiatrist (MD physiatry)as professors & principal in collages
11)If a person join BPT who are the benificiaries. Career guidance people who took admission will get commission. Collage authorities will get donation fees fine etc in huge amount After struggling 4 & half years. Private hospitals will appoint him as a trainee (slave)with out salary and charge him thousands for experience cirtificate after some years this physiotherapist will quit physiotherapy field for livelihood
