Mother's Day Music

When I first performed the Telemann Viola da Gamba Sonata, TWV 41:e5 in 2010, I had a picture of what the third movement meant. The recitative to me sounded like a mother sternly, but lovingly correcting a child who had done something wrong. Not able to stay upset for long, the aria starts and the mother takes the child in her arms where he is secure, safe, and warm.
